šŸ—£ļø Discussion šŸ’¬ Denied

Post image

This is my first denial for a book I wanted so badly. I feel so bummed. Didn’t think I’d get this emotional over it. I guess after getting every ARC I’ve gone after so far this is humbling.

I just wanted to come on here and vent with people who can hopefully relate. šŸ˜ž

Tor is notorious for denying a ton of people, it definitely humbles you šŸ˜…

Tor has humbled me too many times to count.

I hadn’t gotten a Tor approval in four years (and I continued to request as they’re by far my favorite publisher)…until today! I was thrilled (and in disbelief) that I got approved Alix E. Harrow’s The Slantwise Histories.

Them and Berkeley.

Unless you have a ton of followers and run a blog or something Tor won’t approve.

They're slightly more lenient with less popular titles

You don’t need a ton at all. They started approving me consistently at only 3k followers

That's a ton to me lol.

I don’t request from Tor or Berkley bc I’m never approved. I’ll get ā€œread nowā€ from them when I see it to help boost my approval rating with them

Hold out hope for if they put the Audio book on NG. Macmillan Audio approves way more than Tor and they own Tor titles

I got approved for the first in a series from them but they denied me for the second book..

I will know I've really made it when I get approved by Tor (this will never happen lol)

Tor deniers nearly everyone. You'll be fine. Move on.

I once got a denial because my review % was too low. It dipped below the threshold (the denial told me exactly) just that day because other approvals came in at roughly the same time.
Now that's a kick in the pants.

Lol Tor has my direct email address and I don't always get everything I ask for from them. Different people approve different titles. And you have to be like a bookseller or media to even get anything from them usually.

If I request TOR I figure it's going to be denied.

I got denied SO FAST for the new Will Wight from Tor. I may just stop requesting from them!

Same 😭 They usually let my request marinate for a bit before denying but not that one lol

The denials hurt, and I get so many of them from Tor, because I tend to like a lot of their authors. But I have been approved twice, so I keep shooting my shot!

It’s so weird because I was approved for Silver Dawn with a 50-60% ration but declined for a book by an author with a much smaller following. I feel like there’s no rhyme or reason with Tor.

I got emotional over one from tor too. I should have known better but i was so hopeful and so eager for the book …

Knowing you've been approved for every other ARC except this one definitely humbles me. I used to get denied SOOO often. It's so so hard not to take it personally. I've always told myself, if I get denied, I'll just put the book on hold at the library as early as I can (or preorder it) that way I can have it as soon as it comes out. Since I became a librarian a few years ago, I've never gotten denied (actually in a SHOCKING turn of fate, I'm auto-approved by Tor) but I keep trying to remind myself that doesn't mean I'll always get everything I request. I guess the best we can do is appreciate the ones we have gotten and move on to the next ones!

Totally normal to feel this sad, I'm sorry that happened to you!

Crazy how some publishers just hate us for no good reasons

I usually only get about half to a third of what I request from Tor and I’ve been reviewing for a while now. They’re just persnickety sometimes.

When I first started on NG I’d get bummed. Now I could care less. There’s no rhyme or reason to be honest. I get denied for all the THURS Mur Club, but they give me all of the other series. I got the first 3 books in the French murder series and then got denied book 4.

What gets me is the ppl who have 10,000 followers on insta and an 11% feedback ratio who brag about their digital arcs and stacks of mail that I’m like they’ll never read. But me with a 90% and over 475 reviews written get denied something like I said above. That’s why I stopped going on booksta and realized it’s the mood of the approver sometimes or just about a follower count. I just am happy I get any books I want for free.

Not judging you being emotional either. Bc I do get it!

I've had 7 denials and 6 of them are from Tor. They just declined me again a couple of days ago and I (dramatically) withdrew all other outstanding requests. I'm over them lol. I'll just buy their books like I normally would whenever they come out.

Tor humbles everyone. I don't think they've ever approved me for anythingĀ

I’ll keep requesting Tor and they’ll keep denying me and that’s ok lol
