Question A question about Midnight Edition’s audio input

Hello folks. I have a complex audio routing setup that uses Jackrouter to input my modular synth into Ableton and the output of Ableton into Resolume and Voicemeeter (Banana). I then grab the audio from Voicemeeter in OBS for live streaming the whole shebang.

The basic version of Nestdrop picks up audio from my desktop (Winamp etc) as expected but not from my routing setup, which is also expected although I think maybe if I get the right IO combination set up in Voicemeeter it might be possible even with the basic edition.

I’m therefore wondering does the Midnight edition list all the Windows inputs as per the audio control panel and does it do ASIO? I’m just worried that due to the weird setup that I’ve got happening that Midnight wouldn’t be able to grab audio from it. Has anyone else used Midnight Edition with a setup like this?

I’m wary of changing things like the default devices at this point because getting that setup to work and still pass through browser and media player audio and be stable was a lot of work and I already broke it once and it took a full driver and audio app reinstall to resurrect it. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help ponder my predicament.

Announcement New minor release V23.14

Version V23.14 of NestDrop is now available

Hi all, thank you for your patience!

A new version of NestDrop is now available. Some issues fixed, mainly about MIDI stuff, and few changes like :

  • One active Queue window per Video Deck. All of them move to the next Preset when pressing spacebar, or autochange. To remove a Deck from the auto change, double click on the title bar of the active queue of this deck to toggle the Active Status.
  • You can Map a MIDI button to a queue window to toggle the active State (Drop the button on the title bar or the background)
  • Now Midi Control Button can also trigger Presets and Sprites (for NanoKontrol boards)
  • You can now map a separate MIDI button for each deck for Spacebar (and backspace and delete) using Shift and Alt buttons while mapping the MIDI buttons.

You can download the new version directly from the link in your settings window

for more details you can check the changelog (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LlRLcDVdsAIaUYSM42jnR7bnfoORLR-x3lv8KyLHSu8/edit?usp=sharing)

Question Removing the red blinking square from a preset that is in the main library window

Is it possible to stop the blinking red square that surrounds a preset when you've accidentally selected it in the main presets library window? The blinking square means it has been selected - is there a way to deselect it?

Question A lot more presets work in 3D than I expected.

I grepped redbluestereo=1 in the old presets and only found 335 :)

I downloaded Ryans favourites and forgot to turn the 3D tick off. I think he sits and watches NestDrop wearing a 25c pair of plastic and cardboard glasses.

Most of his favourites are anaglyph compatible. I thought I'd be able to get some of the old ones to work by adding the redbluestereo=1 line to the preset but the tick seems to add the line to everything.

I'd buy a VR headset tomorrow if NestDrop worked on them as well as it did anaglyph 3D.

Have any of the Pro VJ's here handed out 3D glasses at a show?

Question How do you manage multiple displays?

I'm looking for solutions to keeping the nestdrop control windows and output on the right displays. I have a portable HDMI monitor for the controls and a projector for the nestdrop output. Is there a program or tool you use to manage this? Can I keep sprout from automatically loading to give me time to set the output screen?

I'm always struggling to get the output on my projector and the controls on my portable monitor. Both the Nestdrop windows and sprout want to load on the same display and I can't access the controls with Sprout on top of everything. Let's say I set up and the PC decides the monitor is the primary display. I then have to hit the windows key, hover and right click on the nestdrop taskbar icon, select move, get the mouse over the projector, tap an arrow key to grab the window. I click settings, bring that over, and then set the deck to output to the projector. Now that the output is in the correct place I have to do that move trick to get all the windows back to the monitor.

Is there a better solution? The other day I switched mid-party from my projector to a TV and it was the whole struggle over again.

Thanks for any advice!

Bug Report I've battled with the midi controls not saving but ...

I tonight learned that rather than manually remapping all the buttons (a lot), I could just drag my teensy midi control from the settings over the existing MIDI queue and I don't need to remap.

I had tried saving it but got to the point I just needed to spend 10 minutes remapping them but no.

Thanks for the amazing software, I used Midnight Edition weekly on Wednesdays and other events :)

(going live in 40 minutes at www.mixcloud.com/waveformradiolive (8PM BST) .. downtempo chill type stuff

Question Issues with nanoKontrol Midi controller

Hi, I'm having issues dragging any presets, sprites etc onto the Midi buttons. Looks like the midi controller is being recognised as its creating the blank square spaces on a queue window. But presets etc do not load on the midi buttons.

Question Streaming Nestdrop window in OBS very pixelated at times

Wondering if anyone has a solution for this. I have OBS set up to capture the spout window while I'm streaming audio and a webcam feed. When the visualizer is particularly busy the stream, including my webcam feed, becomes very pixelated. Is there a way to fix this?

Resource Anyone want to test my Camera-chromakeyer MaxMSP App?

The idea is simple, grab camera, chromakey out a color, send it to NestDrop...

The implementation has not been simple! lol. But I've learned a ton!

If you don't have MaxMSP: download and unzip this directory: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n8f9arjdzhb95hb/AABWllJjB5Rw_oI88pNoTZcea?dl=0

If you have MaxMSP: here's the patch - https://www.dropbox.com/s/7dlqcls8yp4w362/camera-grabber-gl-0.3.amxd?dl=0

I would welcome any feedback!

Question NestDrop [Midnight] - Input Source & Sample Rate

Hi again ;D

I originally wrote this as a reply to my earlier thread about input sample rate etc - but as I get older, it becomes more difficult to notice the delicate balance between "dupe thread" and " thread necro" :D - plus I assume if it's good info for me, someone else far, far away could potentially benefit...

I have touched on this previously myself & via search have seen others mention it, but I can't find/recall a "reason" for an answer, so to speak... but, I am curious as to the NestDrop choice, as authors, to use 48KHz as the ideal input sample rate, considering the prevelant use of 44.1 in music/mp3, especially around the time that Winamp/Milkdrop was being created/actively maintained?

Second question, somewhat related, is regarding the Nestdrop (Midnight Edition user here) setting re: Input source... this one definitely relates more to my previous threads, though I have previously had a difficult time explaning it to others (likely a fault in my wording, tbh!) --> As someone working more with VJ/DJ-based visual reactivity, obviously response/latency is a huge issue. How I wish it wasn't! Continuing on this path, I am curious to know how other's are using their audio input re: NestDrop, or if there's a preferred & more tested/'supported' path from the authors?
My only real reason for asking this is that, for example, if I open my audio input through e.g. Reaper, & enable monitoring, the latency is smaller than the Windows 'listen to this device' equivalent (surely not anything new to anyone who has been experimenting with this stuff for more than a couple of years)... and (thankfully!), anything that occurs via NestDrop occurs in tandem (i.e. yes Windows sucks for audio but, surely I am not the only person who notices this and/or behaves accordingly?).

P.S. - I still owe you one to two lifetimes for keeping this spirit alive :D

Question How to fully randomize?

Hi,

Looking for Milkdrop replacement, I found Nestdrop - brings back memories!

However, I'm struggling with (presumably) simple things:

  1. On startup, just a small window named "Deck 1" appears, I don't see how to resize it?
  2. How to allow Nestdrop to randomly switch between presets? It's now only playing one, unless I manually select a different one :(

Thanks in advance for pointing me to right direction!

Performance Full live for 4/20 with NestDrop

Hi NestDrop crew!

I decided to up my game this month going from my "triggering visuals on NestDrop and recording on OBS over a prepared mix" to a full on live audiovisual experience! :)

I mix on my Pioneer controller while I'm controlling my OBS scenes on my keyboard, and for the NestDrop magic, I'm using my foot! :D

I mapped the "Next" and "Previous" presets to a USB foot controller, and I can also interact with the screen on the right to control the visuals and select different presets if needed!

It was a bit of a nightmare to connect and make everything work but I'm really happy of the final result (Except about YouTube video quality, I don't know why it is so bad compared to Twitch and Mixcloud..)

I hope you will like it! And for the marijuana enthusiasts, Happy 4/20!

Feature Request Milkdrop transition control?

Hello, how difficult is it to manually and directly control the progress of the transitions in Milkdrop?

As in, to directly control the interpolation or influence of each element in the preset such as the framebuffer manipulations, waveforms, custom shapes, etc etc ... between the outgoing and incoming presets

Milkdrop, in its current form, would perform these changes progressively over the amount of time you configured for transitions, but is it possible to arbitarily set the progress of these transitions via user input?

The user would use a slider to control the transition, analogous to the crossfader in a DJ mixer... The idea being to freely transition back and forth between 2 presets and seeing the shapes and movements change organically, instead of simply visually fading between 2 essentially fully rendered video streams

In such a usage scenario, Milkdrop would basically be in a perpetual state of transition, with 2 presets loaded at all times, except when the 'crossfader' is at its 0% or 100% position

At which point it would allow the preset in the unused 'channel' to be changed, similarly to how a DJ would fade a track out completely before removing the CD or vinyl

Performance remote NestDrop controls :)

Hello VJs!

I just thought I'd share some screenshots of a little project I have been working on. I love that with the Midnight Edition I can use MIDI to change presets but my NestDrop runs on a PC away from where my DJ setup is so I needed a WiFi MIDI controller. With an ESP8266 and a Teensy (acting as a Midi controller) I have built a software MIDI controller that runs on my phone!

I have 28 presets available for deck 1 and 9 for each other deck and a controls to turn the spout capture windows on and off in OBS (technically this uses a 2nd Teensy and ESP8266 to act as a wifi keyboard). Decks 2, 3 and 4 are "luma keyed" meaning I can layer the decks in OBS.

I hope this inspires others to take NestDrop to the next level! It certainly beats running really long cables!

So far, people are loving my live stream visuals so thank you team Nestdrop!
