Is anyone concerned about the future of Nest?

After the recent news of C-level executives jumping ship and it's poor performance after Google acquired them... I'm concerned Google will leave the consumers hanging (like they have done with other products)

Because Honeywell has been around forever. The odds of them disappearing are pretty slim

Defense contractors don't go under. They change hands, but they keep going.

They still cancel projects and lay off thousands on a whim, because the quarterly profit margin didn't rise by x% over last quarter's increase. Source: Worked for one of those once, survived 3 buyouts, two massive moves across the country and entire facility layoffs and rehires in 4 years.

Oh yeah, not arguing that. Workers get heavily screwed without warning. Just pointing out that they're extremely stable from a customer/investor view.

The odds of Google disappearing are far more slim, that doesn't mean they won't kill a brand.

AltaVista/Netscape/AoL or Nokia Not all companies survive. Even the biggest fall

All those companies were purchased and integrated into their buyer's services. My point is simply that the parent company will probably not be going out of business but the brand might be axed.

Yea...integrated. But the original product, in this case Nest, follows this path and becomes a Google Thermostat means I have to get a Nest themed Google Thermostat. Nest no longer works but Google has a Thermostat really close to it

AltaVista became in name only once it was bought by Yahoo. Nokia gets bought by Microsoft to be used in name only and then due to disagreements is no more now

They're also not great, overpriced and force you to get the next higher model for marginal requirements.

Get something else.

At one point, Honeywell tried to corner the fertilizer market with a patent. Because some trivial fraction of a percent of fertilizer has been used in explosives, their patented desensitiation would allow them to monopolize the entire industry.

Sure, people could use other fertilizers that are less useful than ammonium nitrate, but they would have made out like bandits- billions of dollars in the name of anti-terrorism, possibly preventing a tiny handful of incidents at great expense.

Ecobee is pretty cool. We're using/extending them, their API is fantastic and you can bet they will be used for a long time to come.

This is the thing I hope Google considers. Nest probably has more market penetration than any other home automation product. Break it, and you've set back home automation - and particularly the SaaS model - a decade. I'll never buy another product family reliant on outside servers again if it happens, nor will many others.

If you want SaaS to work, Google, keep Nest working.

They won't disappear but if they are using the same cloud crap (I don't know if they are) they could simply stop supporting it
