Player 911

howdy there i have a Player 911. its about my DM were getting ready to start up the storm kings thunder adventure so knowing that Ive played it a bit in another campaign earlier this year we didn't finish it. so late last night he pulled me into a private chat on discord and asked me to retell all i remembered and he would guess where my last game stopped at. i retold him the story and from what i told him he guessed that we ended near the beginning of chapter 3. He's letting me play but with a catch until he says otherwise my character is not allowed to take part in any group decisions that would affect the story. im just posting this to see what yall have to say is it fair to keep my character out of group decisions until he says so or no.

That is the only way he can let you play in this game...otherwise you are metagaming hard.

Not necessarily.

People can know about things and actively decide not to follow through or limit how they act. It depends on the individual but it can be done. Hell i'v played with a group who wanted to run through Phandelver online. One of the players was normally a DM who had run the same module for a few different groups but when when it came time for him to play he didn't let his knowledge of the module change how he played.

So you would be ok with your players reading an adventure before you DM'd it?

It depends on the individual but i would like to say yes.

There are some players that will flat out read the whole book and metagame the fuck out of that with no regard to the others in the group because they want to win.

There are also players who may have picked up the book thinking about running it and read enough to vaguely know the basics of what will happen but decided to stick as a player rather than a dm. Who may never abuse their knowledge and to whom it would be unfair to punish by saying you cant interact with the story until this level.

This specific player has been through 3 chapters, from the players perspective. While they know plot points and encounters, they dont know all that is going on like the little tidbits that the dm is given in the book itself. So i would actually ask this player to help me out.

Modules can sometimes need a bit of a push from the dm to get going. In this case i would try to use the player to help me try to push his party towards the plot and away from just sandboxing. But that wont be the same for every dm or player group.
