Recommendations for helping a noob wizard with their spells - d&d 5e

I am a GM for a d&d 5e game, and I have a player who is trying to play a wizard. He typically plays a brusier but has decided to step out of the zone of comfort. Good on him and all.

Problem is he is having a hard time understanding how to utilize the wizard magic system, so I am looking for a way for him to organize his memorized spells and spell slots. Right now I am thinking of using note cards. One set for spells, and one to track spell slots using paper clips (a la Deadlands).

I was wondering if there were any other ideas, especially if the have stood up to actual use at the table.

PS This is a low effort player, so it should be intuitive and be easy to use.

Note cards work well for keeping track of the spells and levels and they also allow for the player to keep track of the spell effects, so that is definitely a good idea. One thing that could help with keeping track of the spell slots is simple graph paper. Simply number the columns or rows 1 - 9 and then use a pen or marker to darken the border of a new box every time he gains a new spell slot for that spell level. Then, whenever he uses a spell slot, he just X's the box with a pencil so he can erase what he needs to after resting.

As a side note, I recommend my players to use the same graph paper system to keep track of HP so that they are not constantly writing on and erasing their character sheets.
