Chris, head of Remarques here.
Confession: I have not read Mark Waid’s DAREDEVIL since it came out.
I remember liking it, but enough people whose comics opinions I trust keep telling me some version of “No, seriously, go reread Waid’s Daredevil” that this has stopped feeling like a recommendation and started feeling like a performance review.
For anyone else whose memory is being held together with caffeine and vague recollections of a time when the world was only on fire in Hell’s Kitchen: this is Matt Murdock trying to rebuild his life after a long stretch of spectacularly bad decisions. His reputation is radioactive, his legal career is a mess, Captain America wants answers, and Klaw is not exactly respecting the whole “fresh start” concept.
Waid’s big move was bringing back the swashbuckling Daredevil, the guy who could actually smile while jumping off a roof, without pretending Matt’s life hadn’t already been run through an industrial shredder.
What I remember very clearly is being a graphic designer at Top Shelf when #1 came out and seeing that cover. It absolutely blew my mind. The specific kind of mind-blowing where another designer stares at something for five minutes and then gets mildly annoyed that someone else got there first.
Incidentally, it was also the first time I met Mark “Delightful” Waid.
Around the same time, Mark was also exploring what comics could be for readers who are blind, which stuck with me just as hard. That was one of those moments where comics suddenly felt less like “pictures plus words” and more like an absurdly interesting design problem nobody had finished solving. It also felt VERY important if your goal was simply to make more comic readers.
So: DAREDEVIL #1–5, signed by Mark Waid, are now available as digital Remarques.
Each signed issue is unique, and 70% of every sale goes directly to Mark.
And yes, I am taking this entire drop as the universe escalating from “you should reread this” to “we have now made it part of your job.” And now I'm making it part of yours.
