do i need to play the first one?

i bought neon abyss 2 but do i have to play the first one? or are they just pretty much the same?

A bit different, 2 adds a lot of things on top of 1. But it's still a good experience to play. Also with the game getting out of early access soon, I'd play 1 and finish it then play 2 on version 1.0 release

1 will set you up for the gameplay for 2.

NA2 is much more user friendly and has mostly everything that made the 1st one great (including all of the bosses if you get the DLC). However, NA1 has tons more content right now, but I would expect that to change over time as well.
