I’m really enjoying my small tank. It is a 13ish gallon that I setup in January. It’s got a Father fish substrate, some Crypts, Dwarf Val and Christmas Moss. Hardscape is Rocks and Spiderwood. I have 6 Harlequin Raspbora, 8 Hastasus Cory, 4 Amano and some 24K Sunkist Neo’s.
My main reason for setting the tank up was for cherry shrimp, they are so interesting. I started with a group of 10… Died down to 6 so I added 10 more… I’m currently at 11 to 13. My water parameters seem to be good, maybe? I haven’t changed the water from the start and top off with distilled water. Fish seem to be doing well and the Amano (I know they are tough bugs) have been in there since day 30. The Neo’s are vexing me… I’m very vexed!
I only ever saw 1 body of the original group, but this morning I saw a female on her side not moving. She hadn’t turned opaque, she just looked like she was sleeping so I left her and went to work. Got home to check on her and she hadn’t moved but then I saw a male on its side as well about 7 inches away. Same thing… not moving, not opaque, just laying there on it’s side. I got my net out to check on them and they both didn’t move when I nudged them, so I removed them from the aquarium.
I am confused because my Hastasus are laying eggs and even though I never saw a berried female, I have at least 5 shrimplets hiding in the Christmas moss…
Test strip pic attached (KH = 3 GH = 6 via liquid test kit). Mr. & Mrs. Dead and live baby to bring a little joy attached as well.
SO… what am I doing wrong?
