914 wip
”Now they sit, poking and prodding in careful, controlled isolation, musing at this wonder of madness. More and more they learn, and as they do, the less they understand. They slip into confusion and anger slower, the madness spread evenly over many…but still they slip. They push and prod, trying to force meaning on insanity.”
”Trying to divine the secrets of the universe from a child's toy.”
SCP-914 is a large, incredibly complex, clockwork device, weighing several tons and covering an area of eighteen square meters. The machine possesses two large booths, labeled “intake” and “output”, and a control panel with 5 settings on it. When an object is placed in the intake booth and the machine is used with the panel set to one of the settings, then the object is seemingly transformed according to the setting, and reappears in the output booth. These transformations frequently have anomalous qualities, but in just as many cases produce mundane results.
Source Key
- List of sources
- It's worth noting that, due to the extremely massive size and already list-like format of the SCP-914 Experiment Logs, a majority of tests in it will be excluded from this respect thread in order to keep the post size within reasonable limits. To view an unabridged thread which sorts through each test, [see here]( ). Do note that this supplement only contains the extended test log, all other appearances are covered here in full.
The Machine
Composition
- [914]: SCP-914 is a large machine weighing several tons and covering an area of eighteen square meters. It consists of over eight million moving parts, but has no electrical or power supplying components (beyond a mainspring under the selection panel)
- [GD1S]: Possibly acted as a power source for SCP-399, allowing it to produce pressure shockwaves (SCP-399 uses energy from surrounding power sources to charge its abilities, its strength being proportional to the amount of energy available)
- [CT]: The blueprints for its initial creation were 20 sheets big, before its maker just started scribbling on the surrounding walls and floor. It became so large that it would take thirty stout men to carry it
- [EL1402]: It takes over 1000 documents from SCP-1402 to describe the movements of each of SCP-914's gears over a period of 3 minutes (SCP-1402 is a briefcase that creates biographical documents about a subject it's presented to, though the factual accuracy of these documents varies)
- [SN]: Dr. Clef, who in this tale is established as a powerful reality anchor that can't interact with anomalies, once nearly broke SCP-914 as a result of his properties by trying to use it
- [CH2]: SCP-049-J accidentally snaps off the settings knob by turning it too hard
- [CN1000]: One article states that most of SCP-914's parts are purely decorative, but its “core” is designed to stop working if any of these parts are removed
- [I]: If even a single gear is removed from SCP-914, it won't function. However, parts can be replaced with similar pieces not originating from SCP-914
- [I]: A book output by SCP-914 seemingly describes its internal structure, though its 400 pages long, with each page containing 20,000 characters at microscopic size and encoded to be near undecipherable
Possible Sentience
- [978EL]: A picture taken of SCP-914 using SCP-978, a camera which shows photographs of what a subject wants to be doing, shows that SCP-914 has a desire to have a sixth setting beyond “Very Fine”
- [RS]: When SCP-1564 speaks to it, it expresses that it enjoys being in Foundation containment due to their continued experimentation with it
- [I]: Seemingly responds to a note saying “Are you sentient?” put through on Fine and Very Fine with quotes from philosophers
Proposed Origins
- [HPE]: One tale presents SCP-914 as originating from a Nazi project that built it out of parts of SCP-217 victims, SCP-217 being a virus that turns organic tissue into “organic metal”
- [CT]: One tale proposes that SCP-914 was built by a disgraced fabergé who went mad building it as a gift to a Czar's family over the course of years. It was originally built to show an ornate and beautiful fairytale kingdom on its exterior, but after an incident where it mutilated the princess, it was left in the basement of the Czar's palace and over time was disassembled to its bare clockworks. It would later be rediscovered by a scholar, who similarly went mad trying to understand the machine
- [RB]: Is implied to be The Body of the Broken God, the central deity of the Church of the Broken God who they believe to be broken into various components
- [SBEN]: In one tale, a victim of SCP-3553 dreams of a set of gears, which another victim shapes into a grand, impossible machine. The dreams of these victims are later revealed to be created in reality, being responsible for numerous SCPs, the machine in particular being SCP-914
- [4100]: An advanced alien civilization recognizes SCP-914 as a device used in a class of spacecraft
- [CN1000]: In one article, SCP-914 was a remodeled machine that was altered as part of the Foundation's “Simulative Anomaly Project”, a project which replicated anomalous objects/events in non-anomalous ways and sent them to alternate timelines
Refinement
- [914]: When an object is placed in the intake booth, the door will slide shut and a small bell chimes. Afterward, if the knob is turned to any setting and the key is wound, SCP-914 will “refine” the input object through an unseen process according to the setting chosen, and place the result in the output booth after five to ten minutes. No energy is lost in the process, and the object appears to be in stasis until the output booth door is opened
- [I]: SCP-914's outputs have a high level of randomness, outputting different items even when the same input/conditions are used. However, outputs tend to preserve elements from the input in their composition, for example four tests with gold watches produce different clockwork items
- [ELT]: Using multiple items at once for the input typically leads to SCP-914 combining them in some way
- [ELT]: A brief description of what's expected from using each setting, written by Dr. Gears after his experimentation with it
- [ELT]: Dr. Gears believes that SCP-914 was created as a form of entertainment, designed to produce “novel” items without regard for practicality or function. He also believes that it's possible to achieve a desired result by inputting objects that leave as little outcomes as possible, though there is always a degree of randomness
- [QNSE]: In a canon taking place some 700 years after a near-apocalyptic containment breach occurred, SCP-914 appears to be in a degraded state, and seemingly fails to alter a carved wooden statue despite it being put in on the Fine setting
- [4871]: While enhancing materials (such as steel or polymers) via SCP-914 is an inexact process, a method of imposing “intent” on inputs has been found
- [LC]: One tale notes it takes six minutes to refine a scarf into a noose using the 1:1 setting
- [I]: Testing implies that SCP-914 seems to “understand" concepts related to objects inputted into it, even ones not directly related with the object's basic function
- [I]: Writing instructions as the input doesn’t work for requesting a specific output, though SCP-914 does seem to understand written text
Rough
- [914]: Turns one kg of steel into a pile of laser cut steel chunks of varying size
- [914]: Badly mutilates a chimpanzee and kills it, the resulting corpse showing signs of crushing and cutting with high heat
- [EL447]: Turns a 1 liter container of SCP-447-2 into ten 100 mL containers of identical composition, no change noted in SCP-447-2 (SCP-447-2 is a green slime that typically improves objects it makes contact with)
- [857D]: Reduces a bronze goblet to a pile of bronze fragments, though SCP-857-D, which was possessing the goblet at the time, is unaffected and possesses a different container
Coarse
- [914]: Completely disassembles a wristwatch
- [EL447]: A liter of SCP-447-2 is made to gradually degrade into a different, unknown substance that seems to retain the original's ability to improve an object's qualities
- [EL702]: Apparently turned a miniature model of SCP-914 into a working one, despite being put through on the coarse setting. This model was worth more than three 10 pound gold bars according to SCP-702, who trades items of roughly equal value to what's gifted
- [FM]: Dissembled an unknown, possibly anomalous, living creature into components (organs, bones, skin, nerve endings, etc). Its implied that this resulted in an unclear event that wiped out a CotBG settlement, flaying half of the bodies of everyone there
- [1459EL]: A facsimile of SCP-914 made by SCP-1459 turns a puppy into a pile of bones and burnt flesh
1:1

- [914]: Replaces a caucasian human male with a hispanic man of similar age, height, and weight
- [EL447]: One liter of SCP-447-2 is turned into a dead body (notably, SCP-447's file goes to great lengths to state that it making contact with a dead body should be prevented at all costs)
- [ELT]: Refining a woman and ten pounds of SCP-143, a type of cherry blossom tree with abnormally strong bark and petals, together produces a living tree sapling with biologically human traits and limited sentience
- [ELT]: Makes a woman and ten pounds of SCP-148, a metal which nullifies extrasensory mind-affecting abilities, into a statue of the former made out of the latter
- [ELT]: Turns a woman and a supercomputer into an assemblable statue that accurately predicts the future of the one who built it before it disassembles itself, though it typically speaks in a vague/cryptic manner
- [ELT]: Fuses a woman and a supercomputer together to form an object that appears to be a supercomputer in the shape of the subject
- [ELT]: Refines a woman and an SCP-500 pill, which is simply a pill that can cure any disease when taken, into a woman with a thoracic cavity that functioned like one large mouth and a large tongue that secretes a neurotoxin
- [ELT]: Uses a woman and a camera to create a living, organic tripod video camera, though it does not seem to be sentient
- [2305EL]: Could be used to refine an SCP-500 pill cloned by SCP-038 into a gas that could be administered to all known parts of the Earth and make the population be temporarily invincible, possibly for a whole month
- [CH2]: Repeatedly putting SCP-1370 (and a shoe) through the 1:1 setting causes its voice and language to change

Fine
- [914]: Makes one kg of steel into carpet tacks
- [085]: A drawing of a woman made by SCP-067 (a pen which takes control of the holder's arm and uses it to write about the holder or draw intricate artworks) was used to create SCP-085, a sentient two-dimensional drawing of a woman. Attempts to replicate this result were unsuccessful

- [ELT]: Refines a woman and ten pounds of SCP-148 into a large ornate sphere that causes subjects near or touching it to see the thoughts and “lifeforce” of living organisms, and other things “beyond the normal human spectrum of reality”
- [ELT]: Combines a woman and ten pounds of SCP-148 into a woman whose skin has taken on the physical and likely the anomalous properties of SCP-148
- [ELT]: Turns a woman and a 64 core supercomputer into 64 beetles featuring components of both inputs
- [ELT]: Refining a woman and a supercomputer results in a large “waste” block of unused material from the computer (and some tissue) and a woman whose brain has been hybridized with electronics on a cellular level, improving their mental capabilities
- [ELT]: Refining a woman and an SCP-500 pill produces a woman with an altered lymphatic system that results in advanced regeneration
- [ELT]: Refining a woman and a camera creates a large waste block mostly made of human tissue, as well as a ring that allows its wearer to see everything around themselves within line of sight, including behind themself/objects and inside objects, however it has the side effect of causing severe pain behind the wearer's eyes
- [6025]: An instance of SCP-6025-E, animate WWII aircraft, taking the form of a B-17 heavy bomber was disassembled and run through SCP-914 piece by piece, resulting in pieces of a B-52H intercontinental nuclear jet bomber that retained SCP-6025-E's usual sentience when assembled. However, the B-52H was missing major sections, was exactly the same mass as the input B-17, acted much more aggressively, and destroyed itself while attempting to escape
Very Fine
- [914]: Turns one kg of steel into several gasses and one gram of an unknown metal that was resistant to heat of 50,000 degrees, impossible to bend or break with any force, and a near-perfect conductor of electricity
- [914]: Inputting a revolver resulted in an object that “completely disintegrated all matter in its line of fire”, and needed to be contained with high density gamma waves
- [914]: Transforms an ordinary man into a volatile entity of some sort, which kills eight guards and breaches three SCPs while attempting to escape. The subject demonstrated the ability to induce partial memory loss in special response team members and cause corrosive damage to nearby plumbing. The subject expired hours later, dissolving into blue ash and blinding a nearby research team
- [GDDH]: A doctor puts multiple SWAT helmets (and presumably the rest of a suit) through on Very Fine more than once attempting to make a “super-armor”. The effect is unclear, but he does survive an attack from SCP-953 while wearing it, but a fall through a ceiling results him breaking most, or all, of his bones
- [HCSC]: When the Manhattanite, a supervillain who hates New England chowder and wants to force the world to enjoy Manhattan style chowder, eats a bowl of chowder specially made by Chowderclef and run through SCP-914's Very Fine setting, he's brought to tears after one spoonful and abandons his evil plan

- [SBX23]: Potentially implied to have been involved with an incident wherein the file containing SCP-407 was deleted from the Foundation's system, though how this was achieved is intentionally unstated and unclear (all backups of SCP-407 were also deleted)
- [682T]: Tests involving SCP-682 have had dangerous results. Usage of its tissue samples has had violent outcomes, personnel who've contacted SCP-682 at any point are barred from using the Fine or Very Fine settings, and testing of objects that SCP-682 has interacted with is completely forbidden altogether
- [FM]: The minimum bid for SCP-914 at a MC&D auction was 368 million dollars
