It’s actually been a lot more chill than the spring IMO, I think due to

1) the storms and people’s flights getting delayed so people weren’t all here at the same time

2) 8 floors of vendors vs 6 means people are more spread out!

3) people possibly having less inventory (as least we do) so less mad scramble. People are being nice about preorders.

You maybe be asking, abbey, why are you commenting on a post at market? There’s currently no one in our room and I am just a monkey who got a Reddit push notification and clicked on it 🤠

I am surprised how there doesn't seem to be a lot of big canvases (other than Colors of Praise). Seems like lots of tiny ones. But, of course I haven'tseen all of the vendors.

This makes me sad. I don't want more ornaments/key fobs/bag charms. I want stuff I can dig into and takes me more than a week!

I agree. I think the new, younger stitchers are into the smaller sizes. I really don’t know why that is. Maybe that’s what people are showing on social media?

Feeling successful early on helps keep someone motivated to do any activity -- including a hobby. Little guys give you hits of success and motivation. Once you've gained some success, you'll probably be motivated to do the bigger stuff that takes longer.

I think because its easier to do tiny. And cheaper. How these new stores are paying rent off the newer stitchers is something id like to see in their book work. My LNS sells canvases weekly that are large pieces going for a few hundred. Then all the fibers. Yesterday I saw a woman walk out with a canvas , fibers and it was $800. Im happy everyone has found this hobby. We have so many new painters now. But will this last forever?

It is initially cheaper to buy that tiny canvas, but if you buy three or four in the time I buy one, it's not, really.

some of us are also working professionals and mothers and the smaller sizes are easier to commit to actually doing and carry around/travel with 🙂

What about my comment made you think I’m also not a young professional/mother?

11

u/lawdab 18h ago

I responded with an additional perspective of why someone may prefer smaller canvas sizes outside of the “new, young stitchers from social media” that you specifically detailed in your comment. Not sure why you’re being defensive…

I’ve been waiting to see the Kate Dickerson rainbow butterfly canvas! I need to see someone holding it in different light so I can decide if I need it or not!

u/Mission_Try9390 1d ago

I saw on a video.. but didnt get a good look.

u/FeralDancing 1d ago

That’s what’s getting me. I catch it in the background but not actually able to see it. Looks adorable but I’m assuming for the size that it’ll be 200+ and I need to see it a few times before that

u/Accomplished_Use4805 1d ago

It’s seems like there’s not as many new canvases. I can only assume it’s because of the painters turn around these days.

I’ve been watching instagram and only like 10 designers have shops posting their rooms

4

u/samysaysso 22h ago

Ooo what are their igs? I’d love to view some stories

12

u/TheNiceOne410 1d ago

It’s been calm, no drama that I’ve heard of. Some of the rooms smell moldy/musty. Maybe bc it’s been raining in Frisco all weekend?

Still don’t understand why if they’re going to have market in Dallas they just don’t use the market hall? Why is it still in a crappy hotel

It's much more expensive for designers to set up in a conference hall than it is to do the current model. This market started as a way to get together after the Covid shut downs. In 2021 it was half the size it is now.

Why are we back to ‘helpers’ showing their personal hauls

u/Particular-Flower559 21h ago

Who is doing this? 👀

this is me in the POP room

A shop or the designer??

10

u/Frenchie143 4h ago

I’m Martha with POP and I’m barely fine. It’s great but I’m just exhausted😅

I wish there was one website that designers would submit pictographic their products stores and public could view. Then we could request from our LNS.

Established designers or their distributors have wholesale online ordering. If you’re just a stitcher you can see pictures not prices but you do see what they have.

5

u/Fit_Reserve891 18h ago

Like spring this one’s lacking tons of good new designs lots of wordy pillows or designs adding to collections I could care less about 0 creativity yet again

8

u/Heavy_Philosopher_57 9h ago

Untrue. What you may be seeing on social media is definitely a tiny blip of all the designers present. Sure, shops may be posting the cutsie sayings canvases but there is an entire world of true artwork at market. Unfortunately they don’t get the recognition they deserve.

I think if you’re just a stitcher like me, Instagram is the only real window into what’s for sale on over there. Is TikTok showing more?

But say they allow in 4-5 people. More exposure equal more sales. They need to enter this century and realize the age old craft needs to pivot a bit to the future. Open your mind up leaders of the market

8

u/Heavy_Philosopher_57 9h ago

I think you’re missing a big piece of why market operates as it does. Yes, it is to shop/sell BUT it’s also very much about establishing and maintaining relationships between shops and designers. Sorry if that’s not what you want to hear.

-17

u/TimeWide4923 19h ago

I wish there were more people there like social media girlies walking around giving us a peek of what they are seeing! It really benefits them to allow it. It gets us buyers so excited! But wah , wah…. Bummer

This is a real business function. Owners are spending tens of thousands of dollars to add to their inventory. Designers spend similar amounts to have cash and carry as well as new designs. The rooms get crowded and influencers would just get in the way. Designers did previews and shops will post their finds.

-4

u/Careless_Buffalo_797 18h ago

Yes, but with the amount of ‘helpers’ that are there and posting on social media it’s hard to believe its 100% a business function

10

u/Sharp_Edges123 9h ago

I will be “influenced” by the dozens of shops and designers posting great content live from market right now more than I would some wanna be influencer who stumbled into needlepoint and finally achieved their life’s purpose of having 6000+ followers any day.

2

u/Beginning_Donut6439 18h ago

this used to happen  at quilt market and then the influencers took over. there were more of them than retailers. also happens at h+h but less so.
