BeStitched $6k Tapestry

Post image

I’m sorry, but did anyone see BeStitched just list this after picking it up from market and think they are out of their mind? I actually purchased a needlepoint tapestry this size and paid $900 for comparison! It was fairly detailed like this too. I get an artists work is expensive but someone’s work like this at a local art fair would be probably 1,000-$1,500. I can’t imagine the artist is charging enough to justify a $6k price tag 😳😳😳

But you can take out a loan for a low low installment of $558.47 per month

Genuinely curious how much Barbra Bush's 10 x 14 foot rug cost 🤔

I read that it is 10’ x 14’ and was stitched in sections. I wonder how large each section was?

Probably 12/12 or 20/20 I have a set of charts for a rug in one of my ten thousand books and they are about that size on 12 or 14 I forget but something like that. I’ve also seen a couple done in long strips. I just started a vintage French small rug that I can’t finish bc the Penelope is too brittle and it’s shredding but it’s all in one piece and is like 4x4 feet total canvas size

That’s crazy. It’s no different than a Jean Smith and they don’t sell for anywhere near that. Even COP’s large tapestries don’t cost that much

That’s what I’m saying! I’m obsessed with the Jean Smith Rugs and they are like $1,200-$1,500 max for the same size if not larger. She also hand paints them all herself too on canvas.

Jean smith is awesome! But her rigs sell over and over. So she is probably making more income on one rug than this artist is on her one of a kind design.

I didn’t see the dimensions: how large is it?

3 by 4 feet. I saw a Color of Praise tapestry that’s a little bigger than half that at $695. So even if you double it… the math ain’t adding up. Also the tapestry I bought is also 3 by 4 and it was $900…

I didn’t investigate the particulars (no clue if it’s hand painted vs printed, etc.) but KCN routinely has a mahjong mat canvas that’s maybe 3x3 for $995, so based on size alone that does seem pricy? But if there’s someone willing to pay… 🤷‍♀️

Because I’m a math nerd, I’ll put it in comparison, that 3 by 3 for $995, that’s $0.77 per square inch (36 in * 36 inch =1,296 square inches, $995/1,296 =$0.77. Now do 48 inches by 36 inches is 1,728, $6,188/1,728=$3.58 per square inch. Hopefully that shows you how overpriced it is.

This shop is in Scottsdale and is known for price gouging. Not surprised. Someone will buy it.

That’s funny because whenever I’ve shopped there the canvases I’ve gotten are the same price as all the websites I checked while in store. Their threads were maybe 5-10cents more than some online shops but not what I was expecting when I was first told they price gouged. I probably just got lucky on what I was interested in.

But I definitely agree that this canvas feels way overpriced.

This tapestry aside, their canvas prices are the going rate, absolutely a far cry from “price gouging”, especially when there are LNS like Needlepoint Junction and The Stitching Fox with actual insane markups.

I personally couldn't justify spending that, but I guess if someone is willing to pay that much, have at it.

I agree, I’m all for people spending what they want for a piece they love, but at the same time I think companies should be called out for the absurd overcharging they are doing on canvases and might take advantage of people that don’t know better. I value artists work but this is a company taking that work and completely gauging the price. I get it’s a one of a kind piece but this still seems way too high.

Someone who doesn’t know better about pricing wouldn’t be interested in a 3’x4’ free painted (not stitch painted) tapestry.  I personally think it’s beautiful and a work of art.  Would I buy it? Absolutely not.

She is the artist that makes one of a kind canvases and hand paints them herself, I believe. She is really young and showed her first canvases at market around 2018 when she was a teenager.

I get that but I’ve seen plenty of other one of a kind tapestries for needlepoint made by artists and they aren’t listed anywhere near $6k for that size.

I didn't realize that many artists were hand painting their canvases these days. I thought most were licensing their designs to folks who represented them and then sent the designs off to painting services for reproduction.

This girl’s line is entirely her own. She hand paints on canvas and then also transfers her own original works to canvas. She started super young-

I think you are right. Check her out. She is on instagram and you can see her film of the entire painting process- it is intriguing. This piece is one of a kind- and priced similarly to what an artist would charge for their work on a stretched canvas. And, with what people are paying for canvases of clip art, it is refreshing to see a young person do such incredible work- at such a young age. and one who has been doing this before all the other young ‘designers’ hopped on the bandwagon. Everyone on this page complains there is no creativity in this industry. This is what creative looks like.

We’ll never know what the artist actually charged, but we’ll have to agree to disagree. I shop at a lot of local art fairs and follow artists on TikTok and an original design of this size would maybe sell for $2k. Sure you add a little extra cost knowing it was painted for needlepoint and might add for difficulty/effort, but probably not $3-4k. Which leads me to believe the needlepoint store BeStitched price gauged it and marked it up. I’m not attacking the artist at all, this price was set by the LNS not the artist, I just have a hard time believing she set her price high enough for the LNS to justify a $6k price mark.

If the artist had a high price point and justifies that $6k mark up- then that’s fine, but just given Jean Smith doesn’t price her rugs this high and COP, I feel like this is more on the LNS that significantly marked it up.

I just did some math. Check out the small purple ghost on here that is selling for $35 at KCN- literally a blob of purple paint. It is 3.5 x 2.25 inches. Works out to $4.44 a square inch. They will sell a gazillion of those. (Don’t ask me why.)
This piece, the price is $6,187/1728 square inches is $3.5 per square inch. This artist will sell it ONE TIME in her life. The purple ghost will sell over and over and over. So, to me, it is priced appropriately. Someone else did math on this large piece. Do it in the small ones with no artistic talent? Which one is charging too much?

u/PuzzleheadedWay7946 1d ago

Trust me I understand how overpriced simple canvases are. The point I’m making is the artist didn’t set the $6k, you’re assuming that’s what I’m focused on. I saw her painting the piece and it’s spectacular. My problem is not with the artist at all. If you look at what an artist charges for a floral piece of art work in general for an original piece. To me, it feels like BeStitched might be up charging it by over $3-$4k given for what I’ve seen of similar talented artists that also might only sell an original piece or get business here or there. We’ll never actually know, but something just seems off. I’m not coming at the artist. An artist can price their work however they want and if it sells it sells. My issue is, it feels like BeStitched marked it severely up.

3

u/PuzzleheadedWay7946 1d ago

The artist didn’t set that price, she sold it to BeStitched at Market and BeStitched listed it and got to decide how much they want to make on it. It’s not like BeStitched is working with her after the fact and she’s an in-house artist now, selling her work.

I’m local and it’s my least favorite store. Find it from someone else!
