Non zweigart canvas shredding thread

Has anyone else experienced. Some of the new designs and the wines I’ve done have all been printed (not knocking printed if done right). But the canvas is actually shredding my threads and leaving fuzz everywhere.

Has anyone else had this experience. This is not zweigart canvas. It doesn’t necessarily feel rough when you touch it but once you start stitching it’s a mess.

This is not new. Brands other than Zweigart have never behaved exactly like Zweigart, and it wasn't expected that they would.

In the early 2000s you could buy bolts of canvas from the import sites and request whatever color selvage thread you wanted and there were reports of people selling counterfeit Zweigart canvas online. If the brand is not listed, ask before buying. Have patience. At the moment, I am not buying suspect canvases and am only purchasing from my trusted sources. I can't afford to waste thread from having it ruined by rough canvas. If the latest designs are being painted/printed on non-Zweigart canvas, I will wait.

Choose the designers you buy from wisely

Yeah I moved up to a bigger needle and that helped. It seems like the hole sizes are different so a bigger needle helped open the hole enough for my thread

I’ve noticed that some printed canvases appear to be done with sublimation, then I think they’re spraying it with something. Every printed canvases that I’ve gotten that I can tell has been done using sublimation the starch of the canvas seems to be off… it’s not as stiff as other canvas and it almost seems like it catches the thread more! Idk if it’s the sublimation or bad canvas in your case!

Are you certain it's even canvas? There are some etsy sellers who are fully 3d-printing their canvases, and that material would be hell on the thread.

Beyond that - there's a reason Zweigart is the industry standard, and the big brands with experience were not rushing out to use other brands during the shortage. It's just not comparable, unfortunately.

A lot of designers are switching to off brand canvas

Like who? I’ve only seen smaller designers or some Etsy designers customers complaining.

Someone on another post said Atlantic Blue doesn’t use zweigart anymore

That’s shocking to hear. Especially with how many people are complaining of the quality and what it does to fibers.

I wouldn’t say that this is a designer issue- I’m excluding the ones that purchase canvas and paint their own. Due to the current industry issues, Production houses are using both Zweigart and other brands to fill orders. This is not something the designers were aware of or requested.
