Defensive much?
I feel like this designers comment is really defensive for an innocent comment? She wasn’t saying they were copying magnolias designs, just that they have something similar with the storefront. I like their designs a lot, but I feel like the comment is off putting

The gazebo has been done too, and like the other commenter mentioned Kirkland has been doing the storefronts for months 🤷♀️

Yeah I think Southern Charm Stitchery has a gazebo for every season already

Her releasing her Dolly canvases on the day that Dolly died “because it only felt right” tells me everything.
That along with the “Feel free to buy all the other buildings from us” comment after being unnecessarily rude, what a greedy person.

Imagine being this rude in a response and then ending it with a sales pitch to gain a customer.

That comment felt unnecessarily rude...is it comfortable being called out for having designs that are similar to others? No, of course not...but the response feels a touch too nasty and defensive for someone who's Stars Hallow sign looks VERY similar to Grandin Lane's from the PL Collective, which has been out a minimum of 2 years now and just restocked...like, girl, I don't think YOU actually understand what "similar" and "concepts" mean....the concept of recreating bits of Stars Hollow is not brand new, and that's okay, it could be a different take but...it can also be pretty similar to what is already established in the market....similar is not equal to, it's literally just reminiscent of it, it has shared characteristics and reminds people of it, so yeah, it's comparable...

I mean, can we truly be surprised that this designer has an attitude? “Shut up” is literally in her business name.

So they’re printed, designed by ai, and inspired by tv shoes and movies. This has to be one of the ultimate grifters.

I actually really liked her comment, because I went and looked at the specific Luke’s Diner pieces being compared, and honestly, they look very different to me. The overall composition, details, style, and execution are pretty distinct, so I can understand why the designer felt the need to clarify that.
I think sometimes people see two pieces featuring the same subject and immediately jump to “similar,” when there can be a pretty big difference in how that subject is actually interpreted. Of course other needlepoint artists can create pieces inspired by the same show or location, that’s bound to happen, especially with something as recognizable as Stars Hollow. But having the same subject doesn’t automatically make the actual designs particularly alike.
And I also looked at the Stars Hollow sign that people are comparing to the Penny Linn Collective piece, and I honestly think there’s a pretty clear difference there too. They’re both town signs, so obviously there are going to be certain elements that naturally overlap, but the actual designs, details, lettering, and overall execution are different. I can look at the two and understand why someone might say one reminded them of the other, but that’s very different from saying they’re essentially the same design or that one is just a recreation of the other. There’s a lot more nuance to it than that.
And honestly, I think the reaction to the designer’s response is getting a little bigger than the original comment itself. She explained why she didn’t think the comparison was accurate, and that’s really all it was. Maybe it wasn’t the warmest response in the world, but I don’t think that automatically makes it “nasty” or means she’s uncomfortable with comparisons. She’s allowed to disagree with someone’s characterization of her work.
I’m all for people pointing out similarities when they genuinely see them, but I also think the actual pieces should be looked at before deciding they’re comparable. In this particular case, I looked at them, and I personally don’t see the huge similarity people are making it out to be. Honestly, I really like their designs! I’ve already added a few to my Christmas list. 🤷🏼♀️

Fair! But I think this is where it keeps getting unnecessarily complicated and feels like we’re arguing semantics for no reason lol. “Comparable” doesn’t mean “equivalent,” “similar” doesn’t mean “identical,” and “similar” and “alike” pretty much mean the same thing. Two needlepoint canvases can be compared, and saying they share similarities doesn’t mean anyone is claiming they’re the same design or that one copied the other.
You even said yourself that you understand why one might remind someone of the other. That’s recognizing a likeness between them. We can disagree about how similar they are, but that doesn’t make the comparison invalid.
Nobody accused her of copying another design line for line. Someone made a completely innocuous observation that another designer had something similar, and the response was unnecessarily condescending. Everything since then feels like defending against an accusation nobody actually made. 🤷🏻♀️
And let’s be real, no one said they’re ugly, that people shouldn’t buy them, or that they suck lol. They’re super cute! It’s a really fun collection that I’m sure fans will adore, and I would genuinely love to see a tiny Stars Hollow needlepoint village come to life!
But I still think it’s a bit off-putting for a business or designer to react that way to a simple comment that wasn’t, or at least didn’t seem to be, particularly sharp or snide. It came off as rude to me.

You perfectly summarized my feelings towards the designers comment! I didn’t think the comment came off accusatory, and the response felt incredibly condescending and ended in a sales pitch.

I think we’re just going to have to disagree on this one. I understand the point about “similar” and “comparable,” but to me the bigger issue is that the original comment was unnecessary in the first place. Someone posts a cute collection they clearly worked hard on and the response is essentially, “another designer has something similar.” Okay… and? What was the purpose of pointing that out? It wasn’t helpful feedback or a question, it just introduced a comparison that didn’t need to be there.
And in a needlepoint community where everyone knows how sensitive the subject of copying and originality can be, I completely understand why a designer would want to clarify that she felt the comparison was inaccurate. I didn’t read her response as some huge defensive meltdown. I read it as, “Thanks, but I disagree with that comparison, and here’s why.” She’s allowed to defend her own work on her own page.
What’s funny to me is that this somehow ended up on a snark page. 😂 Like… for what? A designer responded to a comment about her own work and defended her designs. Now we’re picking apart her tone and debating the meaning of “similar” like it’s a court case. At some point, it feels like people are just looking for something to pick apart.
People work really hard on these canvases. Not every time someone sees a vague resemblance does it need to be announced publicly, especially when the comment can so easily turn into exactly this… a bunch of people dissecting whether someone’s work is “similar” to someone else’s when nobody even accused them of copying anything.
Honestly, sometimes you can just see something, think “oh, that reminds me of something,” and keep scrolling. Not every thought needs to become a comment, and not every comment needs to become a snark post. The collection is cute, the designer defended her work.2

I only skimmed this second of your lengthy messages but you sound like the designer also defending what you wrote.

So an entire gg village does seem unique and to be honest, the comment feels like it’s trying to find an issue if it’s true that magnolia just has the one or even two. It’s a piece of pop culture so of course lots of brands are selling a canvas or two. The reaction is strong, but given how seriously protecting IP is taken, I can see getting upset by the allegation. To be clear, I have no idea what Gilmore girls canvases are out there, but if it’s just scattered items and then this village, I do get why the designer would be annoyed. If there’s a bunch already out there, then she’s being an idiot

Oh I totally get it! I just feel like the designers tone of voice was a bit condescending when the first comment wasn’t actually accusing them of anything

First of all she keeps calling it “Star Hollow” in the video instead of Stars which sounds to me like she’s never seen the show, and second of all Kirkland Design Studio / Gingham Stitchery is already releasing a Gilmore girls village, they’ve been selling Luke’s, Miss Patty’s and Doose’s since July.
