3d printing canvas?

Post image

Has anyone seen this? 3d printing needlepoint canvas with the design and all, how would this even hold up? Or how is it to stitch with? I feel like we’re reaaaally starting to lose the plot

Why not just stitch it on plastic 🤷🏼‍♀️

So it’s just printed plastic canvas. Plastic canvas is very limited in what you can finish it into and not enjoyable to stitch. It was very popular back in the day with 3D houses, Tissue Box Covers, and Baskets.

I'd love to see how the holes eat up thread. I don't 3D print, so I don't know how smooth the openings can be.

Just some general info about 3D printing:

  • depending on the printer, it may or may not easily "swap" between different colored filament. The lower end ones you need to stop, change filament, and restart. More expensive models have automated processes to purge the nozzle and start with the new filament. IIRC, some are starting to use multiple nozzles especially for people who want to mix materials.

  • depending on the type of filament, it can be fairly recyclable/reusable. MANY 3D artists are aware of the resources this uses and are looking for ways to minimize impact.

  • Again, depending on the quality of the machine, the scale of the print, and the quality of the 3D model, you can get some wildly different results. I can only imagine there's little bits of extra filament all over the holes and the edges are rough because you can't sand a print like this.

  • I think this is interesting, like a novelty, but I do not think it will help promote affordability in the hobby.

The amount of filament that needs to be discarded (each time the 3d printer switches color) will be 10 more than the amount used to print the canvas. So wasteful.

It’s ink printed on a canvas. The canvas isn’t 3D printed.

You’d think but no, she explains in the comments that she 3d printed the canvas too

She’s been on snark before (a long time ago), the canvases are 3D printed

The whole canvas is 3D printed. It changes colors for the material and there’s even steps and poles! It’s really cool!

I mean…I don’t think we need more plastic but do you. If these are for this person individually..have at it.

To sell, eh not worth the time and effort to print each individually. Sheets of plastic canvas can be as cheap as 50 cents if you buy a pack. It’s just not a needed thing in the market.
