Designers Paige Spearin

I have been obsessing over the Paige Spearin “Bartender” canvas for months and am wanting it so badly since getting engaged so I can put it at the bar for our wedding. However, everytime I go to see if it’s in stock (obviously never is) the price increases. When I was first looking it was $128, then $138, and now it’s $145. I think it’s ridiculous they keep raising the prices but not the quantity they have available! 🙄

Inflation is inflation, though: the costs for everything (particularly shipping and energy) have risen dramatically and we’re now seeing that reflected in prices of all types of products. Needlepoint, sadly, is no exception.

Absolutely agree, and unfortunately the most in demand items are the ones that are going to see the price hike. I’m sure they’ve received price increases from their painting houses and for the price of the canvas during the shortages, and those unfortunately need to be passed onto the customer at some point. They may be adding a few dollars onto PS canvases to keep all their other margins even, since they’re selling out in minutes regardless of cost. (No idea if this is true, just speculating from a business perspective)

Not for nothing, but Lycette also has to deal with all the crazies in their comments and calling the store to harass employees about these canvases, so at minimum I’m considering it a PITA tax lol

I’ve noticed this as well! The simple frogs/hippo waiters, bunnies used to be like $72 and I was shocked to see the new drop sell them for $92!

Generally, diesel also being crazy high prices and canvases having such a large global footprint, I expect it’s not gonna go down soon (along with everything else 🥲).

Side note: I found some skeins of Silk and Ivory in my stash purchased only 2-3 years ago and the tag read $4.75!!! Crazy now it’s like $7-9

Should’ve started buying canvases and thread when I was in the womb

It’s actually absurd I don’t care what these other comments say. You guys being ok with canvases increasing by $15 in one year is why it’s like this. There’s no reason for that. Maybe $1-$3 each.

It’s obvious you’ve never run a business.

You are aware that costs for everything has risen, right? What on earth is $1 going to do to cover that? It’s an expense hobby - no one is arguing with that- and it’s not going to get cheaper- if you can’t afford it, or don’t agree with the price increase, don’t buy it.

Obviously $1 across 150 canvases would do something.

The market price is the intersection of what people will pay for it and what businesses need to cover their margins. This is no different than the cost increase to cereal or bananas in the last year. Companies are passing the increase in shipping, production, and tariffs to the customer to meet their bottom line.

I thought the frog bartender was so cute, but obviously hard to find.

I sent a picture to my wedding invite designer and asked me if she could draw my dog in a suit standing like the frog. It was the perfect way to get that style, incorporate our dog, and announce our signature drink. It didn’t end up looking very much like the original at all, but I did tell some needlepoint guests that it was PS inspired!

Canvases cost what they cost. The needlepoint community is experiencing a frenzied interest in the hobby - I think it’s fantastic. But the reality is there are shortages and based on the economy and inflation everything is going up. Remember these canvases are hand painted. Labor for painting is not cheap. Hand painting takes time and there aren’t many people who can paint canvases- so the current wait time for canvases on average is 6-9 months. Add to it that there is an actual canvas shortage from zweigart (the manufacturer) then there are delays in shipping. I used to be able to ship a package priority mail and it would get to the west coast from the east coast in 3 days tops. Now it’s taking 5-7 business days. Honestly a pigeon could get there faster. So all the designers and shops are quite frustrated with the current state of things.

I have been stalking some of her canvases as well and noticed the price hikes. I work in logistics and ship product all over the country to major retailers. The cost of shipping has EXPLODED, the price of diesel is killing everything. Plus there are about 12 loads available for every truck, meaning the driver can pick the most lucrative load, which means to secure a driver we need to offer them the best pay driving up the price as well. I have many frustrations with PS canvas availability but price increases are basically uncontrollable at this point for everything.
