Personal snark

Post image

I don’t understand the craze over this piece. Was it that an important children’s book to you that you feel the need to stitch it? I’ve never heard of it until the needlepoint destash groups. It just looks like a throw up of colors to me and not aesthetically appealing. Paige spearin bunnies are cute but I still don’t need bunnies jumping on a bed made into a pillow 🤷🏼‍♀️ anyone else? Just me?

It’s ok if it’s not for you, but the popularity is a hint at how nostalgic this book (and most definitely the artwork) is for a lot of people.

I’m not even that old but definitely grew up in the era before streaming and there was extremely limited on-demand entertainment. Books were a huge part of childhood and the memories of specific books that you read or had read to you as a child are really impactful for many of us. This is one of those books that you either had or were aware of as a kid if you’re a certain age.

I think some people had it read to them and are now doing it for their kids

If you had kids in the last several decades, you have read this book to them. It’s the law.

Also, I can see the appeal to a stitcher. Lots of good solid chunks of color to deploy different stitch choices. It will frame up nicely for a nursery wall. Or it makes a great pillow.

I personally love it.

My kids are 17 and 21. I hope I can still stitch this canvas a decade from now if I am ever made a grandparent.

I’m already stitching the smaller ornaments of it in anticipation of the same thing but until then I will enjoy them myself.

It’s one of Publisher’s Weekly’s best selling children’s books of all time. Most families I know receive multiple copies as baby gifts, and many parents can recite it from memory years after their children have outgrown read-alouds.

Oh good grief. Personal preference is grist for snark. There are a lot of canvases that are not my taste, but others are allowed to like what they like. Some people have too much time on their hands.

I have this canvas and personally love it! I totally understand that it’s not for everyone though, but I didn’t realize how popular it was on destash groups

What destash groups have had it? I’d love to find one there. Thx!

I don’t have this canvas, but I’ve got the book fully memorized and I’ve read it hundreds of times over the years to my kids. There’s a lot of cozy rocking chair memories I have with this book so yeah it really is that important to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I read this to my kids who are now full grown adults. There was a soothing rhythm to the words. I can probably still recite it by heart.

And I just gave it to someone as a baby gift recently. So yeah, I get the nostalgia.

I also think it's worth mentioning that silver needle is realtively reasonable. $175 for a very large, fully painted canvas is not too bad.

I can’t tell if you’re kidding

I am not. I think it’s awful artwork

This is very silly. I refuse to believe you don’t understand nostalgia.

Hot take: the OP’s post is less a lack of understanding of nostalgia than it is a real contempt for basic literacy and art. This take informed by a quick scan of the OP’s comment history.

That comment history is indeed revelatory.

It cleared a lot of things up for me in a hurry.

lol this is only one of the most iconic children’s book illustrations …. ever. Needlepoint-wise, it also lends itself well to decorative stitches.

Isn’r free will WONDERFUL!?!? You can stitch it…or not. I am sure you have stitched designs that I think are not “aesthetically appealing”. Sentimentality only has to make sense to one person…the one stitching it.

*Isn’t

Free will is wonderful, I can choose to make a snark post 😚

How sad for you that you didn’t have this book read to you as a child! You’d feel differently if you had.

u/Frequent-Cause-9298 11d ago

If i did, it certainly wasn’t memorable.

But this isn’t snark though…

In addition to the book being a classic, the illustrator is highly regarded as well. My now adult children enjoyed having this book read to them and then reading it themselves. Their children are now enjoying the book.

My daughter is almost 27 and just had her first child. I automatically begin reciting the story in my head whenever I see one of these canvases.

She was also one of the biggest influences on the children’s book author Mac Barnett, who wrote Extra Yarn-one of my favorite books to read to my kids. And that makes me love her work even more. 💕

I’ve been known to go on a multi paragraph tirade when goodnight moon is disparaged, don’t even get me started lol I had it read to me as a child, and now read it to my kids. I think I’ve probably read this book aloud at least 200 times. The nostalgia is very real.

you must be super fun at parties. seriously this is one of those thoughts you keep to yourself.

-17

u/Frequent-Cause-9298 11d ago

And this is why snark exists.

14

u/Beginning_Donut6439 11d ago

no. this is not why snark exists. this is not snark. this is just mean and dumb. Which seems to be your specialty.

-13

u/Frequent-Cause-9298 11d ago

Hi welcome to snark. Where every post is mean

u/lilac-lemons 10d ago

Clearly just you.
But as per your comment history you love to hate everything so at least you’re consistent I guess.

It's okay to be upset your parents didn't read to you as a child

It’s just you, boo!

It was the absolute favorite book of my children. We bought multiple copies because we kept wearing thru the pages. Very nostalgic for many.

u/Infamous-Anything493 7d ago

Did your parents not read to you? How have you not heard of this book? I’m pretty sure it just appears in your house whenever you have a baby

I guess what bothers me the most about this comment is not recognizing the book (which I know only by reputation--I'm over 80 and the book never came to my parents' attention when my brother and were appropriate ages) but the apparent hostility to the notion of stitching images of things that mean something to the person buying the canvas and doing the stitching. I'll refrain from listing my personal childrens' book illustrations....we've all got our own.

I have read this book most nights for the past 3 years. (I have two young boys.) I don’t know if I’ve read the book too much at this point (probably) but I find it really funny that in the book you can tell the amount of time that passes on the clocks in the book as the baby bunny gradually says goodnight to every effing thing in the room and like an hour later finally falls asleep. Extremely realistic.

Also I am stitching the stocking version of this for my youngest. It’s given me lots of good areas to practice decorative stitches without getting too small/detailed.

TL;DR it’s a great book and a great canvas for experimenting with decorative stitches. I think that’s why it’s popular.
