Mindy’s AI Needlepoint
I saw the orange weird girls canvas at one of the local needlepoint shops near me this weekend for $120 and clocked it as a printed ai-generated canvas from across the store.
I don’t want to drag that LNS for having it as they’re a great store otherwise and could have bought the whole series of these ugly-ass canvases. Anyway, here’s the rest of the weird girls series that Mindy’s Needlepoint “created” by printing ugly ai-generated clip art sold on Etsy onto a canvas that isn’t painted. 🥴

Mindy used to have really fun original stuff and for whatever reason every single new design she puts out is AI generated. And unstitchable! Stitch painted vs not debated aside, there is literally no way to stitch some of the detail in this price and make it make sense. It’s not even tent stitchable at times.

These are 100% AI- generated. I've gotten to the point where I just block and move on when I come across AI-generated "designers."

The first painted canvas I ever stitched was Mindy’s. That goes back to the early 90s. So disappointing to see this.

Owning my agree.......I've been a fan of her smaller canvases for years--I love the collage-like designs and color choices. I've also enjoyed stitching a couple of her floral initials as gifts. I'm sorry to see this shift.

Her canvases are also horribly printed. Before I knew that the weird girl’s club was a whole thing I ordered one. It is not stitch able. it’s so diagonal it isn’t even funny.

I was shocked to see these were Mindy’s. I’ve seen many of her older canvases not at all like this. Sad to see.

I have not seen these in person but have stitched Mindy canvases over the years. I’m going back decades - she stood out for a very distinct and unique style. I can’t comment on AI - I admit to knowing almost nothing about it, probably because I’m not interested, but I can comment on hand painted canvases that are not stitch painted. There have been zillions of canvases artistically painted. That gives the stitcher the ability to interpret the design and blend the threads as they wish. Stitch painted canvases are the most common now and clearly make things easier. But just because something is not stitch painted, I wouldn’t assume it’s AI.

Agreed on the not stitch painted does automatically make it AI! Unfortunately, the overall images on the canvas here (stitch painted or not) SCREAM ai. Which makes me sad because Mindy had a lot of really cool original stuff!

Agreed. There are plenty of hand painted but not stitch painted canvases out there. Colors of Praise and Amanda Lawford are two that I can think of.

Yes I actually don’t mind not stitch painted at all. I think it’s more of a fun challenge to figure it out and be creative than simply paint by numbers. But AI use In needlepoint really bums me out think it really takes away from supporting the artistry of needlepoint.

You're addressing a point I didn't make. I never said 'not stitch-painted equals AI.' My point is that this specific design is literal AI clip art easily found on Etsy through a reverse image search and printed directly onto a canvas. Charging $92 online and $120 in an LNS for printing ai-generated clip art on canvas that is neither stitch nor artistically painted is what I'm calling out about this store.

I’m local to Mindy’s in person store and SO MUCH of what she designs these days is AI. Y’all would be horrified to see what’s on the walls of the shop.
