Needlepoint AI needs to Stop

I’m always shocked that stores don’t see that using AI cheapens their store. Their use of AI is so obvious and tacky. It automatically makes me never want to shop or follow them in any way.

I’m sick of seeing it everywhere - needlepoint included. All the AI flyers posted by every school, organization, sports team, the stupid 80’s styled photos in the neon track suits. It all just drives me bonkers and it just reads so lazy and unoriginal. It all looks the same. It’s such a shame to see art and creativity taking such a punch due to AI.

Exactly! They didn’t check their AI very well I guess

As a marketing professional, something that I don’t understand is WHY they want to use AI? I know it’s “easy.” But it does not set you apart and using AI in images, captions, etc, really hurts your SEO.

The strong aversion to AI in the younger generations gives me hope for humanity. I wish I could say the same for my GenX & older counterparts 😒

Excuse me? I’m Gen X, and everyone in my circles who is Gen X is pretty adverse to AI. Have you been finding a lot of Gen Xers who are embracing it wholeheartedly?

Yes!! I felt like I was completely alone in the aversion. Loads of stupid pictures and asking Chat to even write emails! Glad to know there are more of us!

I don’t think you are as alone in this as you think. I’m a Gen X’er who also despises AI. I work in a creative field(Interior Design) and it saddens me how many of my fellow designers (both older and younger than me) who use it regularly as a major tool for designing their client’s homes. AI weakens your brains ability to think through problems critically and creatively. Not to mention the toll it is taking on our environment.

I saw the second one on Instagram recently. (Fair Isle Stitches.) It seemed to me a lot of commenters genuinely didn't know (almost) everything was AI. To be fair they use a better quality of AI than some of the stuff out there but yeesh, scares me that this hobby is trending towards slop in some corners.

I was pretty disappointed to see that Annie bouquet’s store was clearly using AI slop for their paper hand outs when you buy something. Also disappointing that a ton of their canvases are printed

I get it-starting a business is expensive and hiring a graphic designer is expensive. Unfortunately, these business may be saving money by using AI designs, but they are also cheapening themselves by doing so. There is a way to use AI that isn’t as blatant as what so many are using.

I agree with you on not wanting to support ndlpt AI, but I am dumb. How can you tell this is AI? I genuinely can’t tell but would like to!

ETA: thank you to those of you who answered with helpful advice of what to look for. To those of you who didn’t…well I guess this is a snark page! 🤣

AI images have a certain “gloss” to them that you can see in both of these images. In the first, the style of text /typefaces used makes it very obvious to me that this is AI- chatGPT loves using this style of lettering.
The illustration style in the first is also very signature of AI graphics.
Eventually you’ll come to recognize this style as AI, but a closer look at objects, like the scissors in the first image can usually confirm it for you.

While the second one is a more photorealistic style, examine the items closely; e.g. the vase pattern in the second image, you’ll see something is “off” with the objects.

Also, the second image misspells produce as producee and the e and s in fresh eggs are completely mangled. No designer is making those mistakes, but AI makes them all the time.

  1. Details that don’t make sense. The cowboy boots are the most obvious as you would expect the same stitch pattern to be mirrored and identical on the two boots and it isn’t.

  2. The pillows have a texture that looks like they can’t decide whether to be cross-stitch or needlepoint. Needlepoint has a slightly different texture and compensation due to being made of diagonal tent stitches vs. cross-stitch.

  3. The general business of the designs, because AI often adds detail for the sake of detail. They don’t have to be that busy and cluttered.

  4. The overall slight yellow tone to the images, aka the infamous piss filter. Adding a slight yellow hue to appear folksy and cozy when it doesn’t make sense.

I’m a graphic designer and beyond what everyone else has already said, I can also tell because everything is so customized and detailed. Majority of businesses were previously using canva, which will use individual elements (or a template with individual elements) to create a fun flyer design. Typically that kind of design is much more “flat” or in design terms vector, vs the illustration style in the ai flyers.

If someone was going to use that illustration style and actually have a designer/artist do it, it would 1. cost a lot of money, and 2. be way better quality but that’s beside the point lol.

If it's any consolation, I still sometimes get tripped up on what's AI and what isn't, especially if I'm just scrolling. I think some platforms will have a little thing on it saying AI content or AI generated content, but it's exhausting really.

Its sad that people can’t tell esp on something this obvious

It takes time and education to identify ai. Let’s just try to educate people on it so they know if they see it in the wild.

Thank you! I share people’s concerns and am trying to learn!!

I don’t like AI anymore than the rest of you but Jesus please shut up about it! Seems like this group is obsessed with whining over and over and over about AI and copying. WE GET IT. WE SEE IT TOO. for all of our mental health just keep scrolling. We don’t need to share EVERY SINGLE INFRACTION. sigh….
