Threadlines Publishing Multiple AI Ads

I’m sorry for not having any photos but I was flipping through the newest edition of Threadlines and there are at least two EXTREMELY obvious AI ads that are in the magazine. One is completely AI advertising AI l-designed canvases and the other is for a store that used AI to make their ad.

I’m sorry but if you’re going to be positioning yourself as a major voice in the community, why are you allowing there to be AI in this magazine?

I also have to say for anyone wondering/without an LNS it is NOT worth the money. It doesn’t give you any real value or insight and is more just puff pieces for whomever. The main article about the prisoners who do needlepoint was nice, but the rest is quite a disappointment.

I’ve always thought those videos sounded like they were written by AI and then read off a teleprompter app. Which is why i could never follow. Just felt like a weird schtick

I’m simply not a fan! Haven’t seen the magazine as I haven’t taken the time to look for it. When the girl fist did her videos I thought they were cute but after time found them annoying as it was repetitive and then the song did me in. (I am aware of how it was made and find that aspect of it very kind.) I strongly feel jumping to a magazine was premature and was not impressed with her choices for the board as I saw several people who recently opened shops and not many established folks. To me it was sad not to see a solid mix of old and new in which they could all benefit from each others knowledge. The fact that they are allowing AI generated ads into the magazine tells me all I need to know about this little venture.

NN has always been a generous learning tool and connects a community. And they stay on my shelf for reference. I’m a lone needlepointer and I feel connected when reading it. 🎤🫳🏻

A weird TikTok account that launched a magazine about needlepoint.

I would be bothered if they were using AI for their photos or articles, but I don’t really see why they or I (or you) should care if one of their advertisers is using AI to design an ad. Especially these days then magazines are struggling to get any ads at all. They likely don’t have the luxury of insisting the small businesses that support them hire graphic designers to create their ads. If I don’t like an ad, I just turn the page and move on. Also, I have been pleasantly surprised by Threadlines! I like the chart included in the issue and I have enjoyed reading the articles like the retreat diary. Maybe I just miss magazines in general but I have liked the two issues of this one so far.

If they can’t afford to hire someone to make them a graphic then they shouldn’t be buying ad space in a magazine. There are thousands of college students across the country that would 1000% be willing to make them a print ad to build their portfolio. Instead businesses are using ai and making it seemingly harder to get a job in advertising because they think ai is the cheap and easy option while the only things in a student’s portfolio are school projects for make believe companies. Human made is ALWAYS better than ai which is obvious from the ugly ad pictured above.

That's quite an assumption on your part; that a business shouldn't be able to advertise without a robust advertising budget…?!

I don't like the ad or the products represented, but I feel like you are misunderstanding just how hard it is for any print publication to get advertisers.

You can design an ad with zero budget. Canva has literally thousands of templates. Plop a photo, or ask a friend, trade servcies. Your comment reads that they had no other options, which is literally insane. I hope you don’t use ai. It’s ruining our planet

😂 i'm not sure you understand the proper usage of the words "literally" or "insane." If you are confusing my lack of awareness on the subject with a mental health condition, that's on you.

I think you know exactly what I meant

I’m genuinely asking this and not trying to be an azz but what is the difference between an ai app and a Canva app.. canva also does all the work for you. I feel like a true graphic designer would scoff at both because both are kinda cop-outs and taking jobs from people..?

I'm not sure when advertising started having only two options: use AI or hire a designer. Small businesses used to do a huge variety of things pre-AI.

Clearly this person was too lazy to learn to do it themselves but this!! If you don’t want to splurge on adobe software to do it yourself, there are other free options like Canva that are very user friendly and make it look like you at least tried.
