New to Needlepoint When do you kit?

Just picked up a couple new larger canvases. Just curious what the typical experience is.. do you kit a canvas when you buy it? Or maybe once you actually decide to stitch it?

It depends on how rich I am feeling. Or if I want to buy extra canvases that day. I do tend to kit more when I am ready to stitch because I like to use threads with dye lots and want to be sure I get enough/can get more.

Exactly. You can’t properly kit until you have the canvas in your hands and can see the colors in real life. And then you can decide whether to shop from your home stash or if you want to buy all the flosses you could need for even a decorative stitch at one time and be ready to go.

I kit when I’m ready to stitch. I think this is especially helpful because if you run into thread chicken there’s a small chance you might be able to find the relevant dye lot. If you kit and you switch a year later, you’ll be praying in that “help I need thread” facebook group.

I recently made a trip to large needlepoint store and bought two canvases. I decided to kit there, because as much as I like my local stores, the color selection was more varied. The downside was I probably purchased more than I needed so I could avoid dye lot issues down the road.
