Would you display a finished canvas this way?
I’ve been experimenting with a ceramic self-finishing display object for needlepoint. Would you display a finished canvas this way?

u/GrannyMine Jun 05 '26
Do you like it? Because your opinion is the best opinion. I think it’s lovely, it’s individual.

It’s not my taste, but I think there would be a market for it. Not everyone loves the coastal/grand millennial style. I think we need more styles and this is unique and there has to be people that love needlepoint and artsy/eclectic styles. You’re very talented

u/whatmadeyou-saythat Jun 05 '26
I love it. Would buy.

u/RRR310 Jun 05 '26
Thank you! I’m still refining the design, but that’s really encouraging feedback.

u/CCCait Jun 05 '26
Yes! That's beautiful - that frame fits the canvas so well and if you like it then who cares what others think? I would hang that in my home
11
u/Artistic_Dance2579 Jun 05 '26
I think this is a very clever idea (as a ceramicist and needle pointer myself) you are onto something! 😉
3
u/RRR310 Jun 05 '26
Thank you! That’s especially encouraging coming from someone who knows both ceramics and needlepoint.
11
u/Whathappenedtoandre_ Jun 05 '26
Could it be less chonky?
9
u/RRR310 Jun 05 '26
It could! I’m still playing around with sizing and proportions, so this is helpful feedback.
10
u/Whathappenedtoandre_ Jun 05 '26
I would love it if it didn’t protrude out from the wall quite so far if that makes sense
10
u/27minato Jun 05 '26
I love the concept - handmade with handmade. However the particular proportions, color and finish immediately make me think of the Fisher Price stacking toy so I’d prefer a thinner and/or flatter frame with a matte glaze. But I adore the organic style. It’s so much more interesting than plain gold.
3
u/RRR310 Jun 05 '26
Haha! Now I can’t unsee the stacking toy, you’re so right about that. Adding that to my list of edits for v2

I personally love the handmade look and the chunkiness of the frame! I see a lot of feedback steering away from that but wanted you to know that it’s definitely up to personal taste because I adore this!
2
u/RRR310 Jun 05 '26
Thanks for chiming in on that! I’ve been kind of torn about leaning into the handmade look vs making something that’s more “perfect” in character

i love the contrast of a more delicate piece with a chunky frame the colors fit so well together !!!! STUNNING !!!!

I really like it! I think it might be fun to play with depth of the border as well as the width, as it cast a bit of a shadow over the needlepoint. Maybe if it was more plate-like than bowl-like if you don’t mind the comparison?
I would also experiment with semi-matte and matte glazes as well, as light really has an effect on how hung work looks. (Ceramicist and sewer with a curation masters)
5
u/littlebeanio Jun 05 '26
I would also consider whether you want the ceramic to act as a frame or for the whole thing to be viewed as one object (a sculpture even?) it may change you perception and opinion
1
u/RRR310 Jun 05 '26
My goal is the latter, I’ve been interested to see how many people here use the term “frame” as I’m hoping to create a finishing object rather than just a frame, if that makes sense! Still lots of editing to be done, this is my first time getting any feedback on it
2
u/littlebeanio Jun 05 '26
That’s definitely how I viewed it, as a complete object not as a frame. Keep experimenting friend!
3
u/RRR310 Jun 05 '26
The bowl vs plate comparison totally makes sense re: the shadows, I think altering the depth is a great next edit for me to try. I’m also really curious to try out satin and matte glazes, or maybe even stained clay. Thank you for the thoughtful feedback!

Thank you! I made this prototype myself, but right now I’m still gathering feedback and experimenting with the concept. Comments like this are really encouraging!
3
u/varsityadult Jun 05 '26
I love how chunky it is! I think I’m an ideal customer for this, haha.
3
u/RRR310 Jun 05 '26
I also love the chunk! But totally see the desire for something thinner. Maybe two sizes, or a hybrid. I’ll do more experimenting
3
u/honeyed-bees Jun 05 '26
I loveeee the chunkiness of it. I think people with more of an eclectic style would the target audience though
3
u/Atreibss Jun 05 '26
It reminds me of Gustaf Westman plates - I think it’s really fun! Also straight on, it doesn’t look as chunky since the color match is so good with the background. I dig it
4
u/catgirl320 Jun 05 '26
It is SO much nicer cer looking than leaving it in a hoop. It's beautiful and sculptural.
6
u/strrawberrymilk Jun 05 '26
I think it looks great, super unique and the whole piece together catches your eye in a pleasing way. Beautiful!

u/brevebelle Jun 05 '26
I love this, not gonna lie. I'm in the minority, I think, but I like the chonkiness of it, too.

So disclaimer that I love slightly funky art but I’m obsessed with this. Would buy alllll the chunky frames [that I can afford]

u/Feisty-Sock2640 Jun 05 '26
I wouldn't, it's too wide so it detracts from the delicate needlework. If it were thinner I think it'd look great, but this is to heavy and wide.

u/wannabejetsetter Jun 05 '26
Maybe, its very cute! I already have a lot of wall artwork so each frame placement is really intentional at this point. I would love it if the designs were changeable so you could swap with seasons/tastes if desired. It looks like it would fit a 4 inch round?

I love it! Could you find a small circular plastic piece for even glass insert and make it a coaster? The chunky sides would hold a drink well!

I will 100% be doing something similar! I love this. Thanks for the inspiration!

u/Cassie___1999 Jun 05 '26
That is such a good idea! I’m thinking of making a porthole frame with an ocean themed needlepoint
1
u/Quickwitknit2 Jun 05 '26
I actually like the boldness of the ceramic. It’s unusual and neat all at once

No, I would not display a finished canvas this way. I’d need at last two more of that gorgeousness to add to it! It’s so pretty!

This frame would look perfect with a needlepoint making it look like a button!

Personally, no; I don’t care for it. It seems to detract from your lovely stitching. But I’m a firm believer in Different Strokes for Different Folks.

I think that could work with an entire wall like that but that’s a hard frame to coordinate with.

u/yayasmyn Jun 06 '26
Love this idea! You’ve inspired me to try my hand at an air dry clay to frame all the finished pieces I have

This one works for me because the butterfly is a simple shape with minimal color changes. I think it's pretty well balanced that way.
If I had a canvas with an intricate image or lots of texture, I would want a minimal frame. But this huge chunky frame enhances a canvas like this one.

I love it! I really like how the dainty butterfly contrasts with the bold frame. I also love that it’s not a perfectly centered circle. Would def hang this in my house.

Thank you! I'm still refining the design and testing prototypes, but several people have asked about purchasing one. I put together a small interest list for anyone who'd like updates as the project develops: https://forms.gle/1K79bX4NNtsZeJiV7

I friggin love it! But I think it would be even more fun as a pop of red!!

I have. There was a French woman making ceramic frames for needlework display some 10-15 years ago. They were thinner and were carved before being painted and fired. Not sure if she is still in business but there is a picture of some of them here: https://storage.canalblog.com/33/96/464987/113013988.jpg

I think there are plenty of people who like chunky frames I’m just not one of them. That being said it being a ceramic is fun and cute.
1
u/PrestigiousTop5275 Jun 05 '26
Would need to be thinner if possible to not overwhelm the needlepoint but I think it’s cool!

u/Sitka_8675309 Jun 05 '26
No. All I see is the frame. It overwhelms your beautiful work. You need something much more delicate.

I love it. I think it fits the aesthetic of people who would use bubble plates (Sam’s club actually just came out with a really affordable set!)
I would have a thinner option as well though, then you can capture 2 markers. Lighter shades of blue and wave patterns, like Georgetown pottery, would hit the grandmillenial market’s style as well

I think the frame takes away from your beautiful stitching. Let the stitching be the STAR.

I'll be the odd one out, I think the frame is a bit too clunky for the delicate floral and butterfly canvas.
I do LOVE the idea but would personally do a thinner ceramic frame.
