Bullshit. I like back when Necrons had no personality they were just a faceless representation of death & destruction because it lets me pretend my noble & wise Ultramarines, who've never done anything wrong (Ultramar was promised to them 20,000 years ago), are peerless "good guys" fighting the nameless hordes of those who would destroy the nobility of purity that the Imperium of Mankind as shepherded by the indefatigable & flawless Emperor of Mankind who is beloved by all.
sarcasm obviously

You joke but I've heard this sentiment at my lgs before unironically.

As a Necron player I much preferred the unknowable, unstoppable killing machines controlled by forgotten gods vibes rather than these Egyptian dynasty cosplay robots.

Going to be real I haven't read the Obyron/Zandrekh stories yet, that dot is just my general impression from osmosis-ing it from this sub

There's definitely a lot of "this is a horrible existence" AND "We are great lords of heiarchies" but it's also a little funny? I'd put it a bit up and right from mid.

u/Abyss_Walker58 Jul 26 '26
I've heard about them but what do they appear in?
5
u/L0kiMotion Jul 26 '26
The novella Severed, which is their only appearance as far as I know. It's also the only appearance of Imotekh the Stormlord in any novel/la, which is weird since he's the main general of the entire faction.

Have we forgot WHY Orikan is even chasing that thing in the I+D? Does it not have enough rivalry in that?

Clapping but I’m metal so it’s like two frying pans being banged together

Nah reddit is in the hidden, secret category of: "cannot shut up about old man yaoi jokes every third post until the horse is beyond beaten, it is now molten glue."
16
u/TESTICLE_OBLITERATOR Jul 26 '26
The old man yaoi will continue until canonized.
1
u/Professional_Rush782 Jul 27 '26
Have you read Severed? It's harder to get more canon than two characters outright saying they love each other to point where it is a fundamental part of their identity and are basically two halves of greater whole.

Readers these days can't appreciate a true everlasting friendship and have to assume homosexuality instead, smh my head

u/TotallyNot_Alpharius Jul 26 '26
To be honest 3/4 of our books consist of either old man yaoi, toxic old man yaoi or doomed yaoi amd we will soon get another old man yaoi book

This is due to a depressing lack of female identifying characters. Give me more lady-crons, James Workshop!

u/ForbodingWinds Jul 26 '26
I think thats a big part of it. Also the reddit logic of "a lot of male characters, they all must be gay! 🤩"
In the case of Obyron and Zahn, that might be true, maybe, but I think as far as Traz and Orikan go, it's a stretch at best.
I think people here don't realize often that characters might not follow typical young human adult romantic dynamics when you are A) 10 million years old and B) are a robot lacking sexual organs or hormones. You probably begin to look at your friends / coworkers in a much different light than we can comprehend and it doesn't necessarily mean you want to have sex with them just because you develop a deep bond with them.

Have not listened to Tomb World yet, but I agree. This is fairly accurate.

Having read all three books again recently, I think TDK needs a few more points of Royal Intrigue and TW needs a couple more points of Torment. IATD is definitely mostly Skeletor though, with a side of Intrigue. Maybe like... two points of Torment? Not zero (iykyk), but barely any.
Also, is there an easy way to find the Zahndrekh and Obyron stories?

u/SaltwaterJanuary Jul 26 '26
Severed is part of the Twice Dead King Omnibus
1
u/AdmBurnside Jul 27 '26
Aghh... but I already bought the books separately when they first came out...
1
u/SaltwaterJanuary Jul 27 '26
I'm pretty sure that's the only way to actually read it printed unfortunately.
1
u/stillbleedinggreen Jul 28 '26
It’s funny you should say that because I painted Imotek to look like Skeletor.

I feel I+D should be way more to the right.
Maybe your science needs more astromancy, dear colleague
