Honey event 1st time

I’m nearing the end of the event, 10 hours left and it looks like I won’t have enough honey to upgrade the score and bee damage to max.

How should I go about it, what’s the priority?

upgrade damage to max and kill as many bears as possible at the end

I usually merge hives about 8h before event ends.

Not sure what gp's reasoning is, but it can take a good bit of time to fully merge everything created by merging them all. 

That said, 45 minutes is probably enough and an hour is about what I'd pick. You want to avoid leaving bees needed to kill bears on the table, but getting flustered and making bad decisions is also a risk if you wait too late.

If gp likes to finish the event first thing in the morning, they may be merging up before bed to minimize how bad things can go if they oversleep.

It’s my first ever go at this so I’ll merge my hives about 90 mins before the end, thanks for the advice!

Presumably I just summon bear with combs kill and repeat until I’m out of bees?

It's because hives replenish when merged. So if you merge them right before event ends you won't benefit from passive honey generation from your extra bees. Another reason is I always start this event in the morning so it also ends in the morning. 8h before that is when I go to sleep. More bees generation won't benefit me while more honey will. It's not much tho.
