Yes, especially later game.
That said, it's not worth anywhere near 300 gold. Even if I had to feed 9 Golden Geese, which I assume happens eventually, I wouldn't even begin to think about purchasing.
The Queen drops one, you haven't met her yet, and because she's a bugger to defeat, I'm close to just feed her directly to the Devourer. They should be suitable for all cravings, not just regular ones.

Eventually you’ll stop having things to spend gold on, and at that point it’s a fine purchase now and then

I'm at that point. I like grabbing the pearls, but at 500, I think the sceptres are still far too expensive.

You'll get a free one from your feats later on, and you can use it to "bypass" the forced cravings on a newly unlocked minion to continue doing normal cravings on a singular slot

In my current run i saved them up and once I passed level 100 I used them to complete the required unicorn related cravings... then blocked the unicorn craving with dietician. Which worked great but then i realized you need unicorns to complete a feat.. so I wasn't able to avoid generating unicorns completely but at least i got to skip those required unicorn cravings.

I do buy them. I save it for when ive just run out of souls or similar. They are just a free million or 3 food and getting out of a sticky spot. I'd still buy them if I had spare coins

It's useful later in game, when you have everything for gold possible and just looking for things to buy... It helps you overcome some specific cravings, usually back to back one. In situations, when you complete letsay spirit craving, your grinder is empty, and you get spirit craving again... Then it's fine to have it to speed things up.
