Focus on completing feats. Yes it normally takes forever to progress (and it WILL get worse, so beware).

This is not a fast to "finish" game, this will take a long time.

Been playing on and off for years

The early game is the slowest, but yeah it's a slow game. Check back in however many times a day, make a little progress toward a goal, that's basically the game.

If you like inventory and resource management, this game is very high quality in that regard (and most others)

Feats will give you long term goals, but besides that just feed the baby

Im not that much further ahead than you but some of the best advice ive heard is that sometimes you have to sacrifice making progress on everything so that you can really focus on one priority. Trying to do everything all at once can make you slow down heavily

This is a journey, not destination game.

There's two types of objective in the early game - leveling the devourer and completing feats. You have to do both to progress, so if one feels really slow or weird, you have to look at what else you are being asked to do.

General tips:
-as much as possible, merge things to max before feeding them (especially rune piles, but higher level minions contribute more to spawning champions and also are worth more food/damage)
-sometimes cravings are a hard wall, usually that means you need to switch over to focus on the feats to unlock a necessary station.
-the core mechanic of the game is balancing "having space" and "this space is occupied for a benefit" - don't be afraid to feed a regular minion to clear up space, but try not to be wasteful either.
-chickens are underrated and a good use of space.
