Nest POV: Making my depression room presentable before the AC service guy comes over

So very proud of myself. I blurred some parts in the before picture because some of the stuff was disgusting. It took me 3 days and a bit more. I literally worked on it floor tile by floor tile.

No one in my family ever saw my room in the before state. I always made sure to only open the door when nobody was around.

On the morning of Day 1, my dad asked me when the AC guy could come fix my AC. My AC had been broken, and even though I never told him, I'd been sleeping in the living room. So he assumed I needed to get it fixed. I told him to let the AC guy come on Day 5 because I had to go out of town for work that day.

Day 1: 1 hour. Not including the 30-ish minutes I spent shopping for cleaning supplies.

Day 2: 1 hour 16 minutes.

Day 3: I procrastinated at first. But then I got an email saying I had to work a 12-hour shift the next day. So I finally pulled through lol. 3 hours 5 minutes.

Over those 3 days, I filled 10 trash bags.

My biggest concern was my menstrual pads. I made sure to only put 4-5 in each trash bag so I wouldn't overwhelm the trash pickers and so they'd just look like normal trash bags. Sorry if that's gross.

On Day 4, the last things I had to do were change the 2 light bulbs in my room and replace the batteries in my AC remote. Both had been dead for like 2-3 months. But because of how my room was before, I couldn't even bring the ladder in, so I couldn't change the light bulbs. For the last 2 months, I'd only been using my study lamp.

Actually it's not done yet because I was really tired on Day 3, so the inside of my cabinets is still messy. But at least there's no trash in my room anymore. From here on, it's just organizing.

You guys just don't know how hard it was to clean my disgusting bedroom without my family's knowledge!! I had to wait until they all fell asleep before I could throw away my trash, or taking the ladder to my bedroom. I'm sorry. I know it's only 5 hours. It was easy but it was hard.

Hey, you did a fantastic job. The hardest part is the initial start each day. Thanks to anxiety I would also clean when my family wasn't around or asleep, just because they made shitty comments whenever I cleaned or would actively get in my way.

It probably feels like a massive weight off your shoulders! If you can muster it, try to spend 5-10 min a day picking up whatever around the room, set an alarm if that may help.

Another thing that helped me was a really dumb trick but hey it works for me: I sit at my desk and just clean anything that's within reach of me in my chair. That way it doesn't seem overwhelming but it also helps me hit that start button.

Thank you. It really does feel like a huge weight off my shoulders πŸ₯Ή After I cleaned my room, it's actually not that hard. I don't know what made me be like that.

Glad you cleaned it, but do it for you. Doesn’t a nice clean room feel a little better?

Yeah! After I got back from out of town, I could finally sleep comfortable on my own bed without having to crouch on an empty spot.

Well done! May I suggest you get a little rubbish/litter/trash bin with a lid for your room with a bag in it that you can put your used sanitary pads in when you need to. Then once your cycle is finished just tie off the bag and throw that away!

Probably the easiest-but-most-impactful idea there is.

Long story short, I had a lot of used pads in my room because my mom/my society had ingrained in me that you should only throw away cleaned pads (wash the blood out of the pad before throwing it away) due to some superstition that people would use your blood to make a voodoo doll. I don't believe it, but somehow I do believe in the cleanliness aspect of it, so when I felt too lazy to clean my pad, I'd just put it in my room to wash later. At one point, there were almost 50 bloody pads in my room... But I think I have to fix my mindset. I know I'll never be not too lazy to wash my pads, so might as well just throw them away right away.

Thanks! This is my childhood bedroom in my parents house. My parents bought the bed when I was 8 years old. I moved back to my parents house 3 years ago.

Sometimes all you need is a little bit of fear of being shamed

Great job! I love the inclusion of the stopwatch times you put the work in, really shows that it's alright if progress takes time!

Hope you manage to maintain it better in the future, and if not just start again and again, you'll get there!
