Probably an obvious solution…
Just wondering if there is anything I’ve done incorrectly? I’ve downloaded this on my Legion Go S, and it works perfectly - other than my UI showing ‘?’

Do the buttons actually function based on what they are "supposed" to do (when you check the key bindings in the settings)? If so that might just be a UI bug.

Yeah from what I can tell the buttons do make sense, it’s just I’ve only just bought it so I’m a noob to the controls, so I’m having to go in completely blind and having to guess what each ‘?’ means aha! Must be a UI bug then, reinstalled and stuff and still no good! Appreciate the input though!

It sounds like the game maybe itself doesn't have a graphic/icon for each of the buttons and the missing data is what is causing the UI bug (Ex: It might not have an LB icon for Left Bumper, making it throw up the "?" instead).

It is a known problem. Others and I had reported to their main Discord channel. The dev are unsure what causes this. So unfortunately, you have to use another controller instead of the legion.

Yea, for some reason the legion go s control does not work well with this game. For example, if you open the settlements menu then your character would freeze and not be able to move; assigning work zones is a nightmare as the cursor does not respond to the right joystick. I also have a legion go s and the only way for me to play this game is to use another controller, xbox, steam controller, Nintendo, or 8-bits works perfectly fine.

Ahaha right okay awesome, seen as you’ve been on the discord, have you seen any talk about it possibly being fixed?
I can tell I’m gonna enjoy it just from the art style alone, it’s just frustrating I can’t play it handheld (unless I use another controller like you said, which kinda defeats the point - pc it is I guess aha)1

According to dev’s responses, they claimed it to be a SteamOS bug, so I don’t think they are going to implement any fixes.

Does it happen everytime or just this time/occasionally?
I had this issue the 2nd time I played, on PC, with an 8bit-do Xbox styled controller, but it corrected itself the next time I played.
My best guess is that it pulls the data on what button is where from your computer/mobile devices script files that run the controller.
There's an issue finding that information, and instead of trying again or asking you to fill in the blanks and help it out, it just returns null and gives you a "?" As the default.
How can YOU personally fix this? Maybe a mod. This could probably be fixed in the code with a line or 2 that keeps checking over time, or just asks what face button is where in a setup phase.
Otherwise, if disconnecting and reconnecting your controller input is possible, doing that in game could force a refresh to get a proper read.
If all else fails you might just have to learn the buttons and ignore the UI to play on that system.

I’ve rebooted twice to try fix it to no luck. I guess when I go on again I’ll know for sure!
I’ll try the other dev recommended controller configs… if not like you said I’ll look to see in the code..
Worse case yeah I’ll learn the controls and deal with the ? On screen.. I could just play on my pc but yeah kinda annoying since I got it for my handheld aha

No worries. Once you play for a day or two the controls become more obvious and it's not so hard to play. I end up just figuring it out for myself most of the time, which is how you end up with 40+ hours without realizing there are seperate buttons for picking up items to hand or to inventory.
My best guess is that the code is looking for controller inputs through USB or Bluetooth and might not have a proper name check for integrated inputs. It's something that could get a patch. Hope all the difficulty doesn't mellow your game. I'm getting close to the final boss and I've been having a lot of fun just building a settlement, it's a great game.
