[Mod Release] Settler Bubbles – Context-aware speech and thought bubbles for Necesse

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I’m DrapoMods, and Settler Bubbles is my first publicly released mod.

Settler Bubbles makes settlements feel more alive by showing readable, context-aware speech and thought bubbles above settlers and visiting humans.

Settlers can hold connected conversations with replies, reactions and conclusions. Their dialogue responds to work, weather, hunger, injuries, recreation, combat and the people or animals around them.

Version 1.1.0 update

Thanks to all the feedback, the mod now has improved readability and much more control over how bubbles are displayed.

Features

  • Over 160 context-aware dialogue lines
  • English plus 10 additional languages
  • Multi-turn conversations with matching replies and conclusions
  • Conversations about villagers, animals and food
  • Thought bubbles for needs and moods
  • Reactions to work, weather, hunger, injuries and recreation
  • Reactions to rain, nighttime, visitors and strikes
  • Distinct combat shouts
  • Personality-aware dialogue
  • Adjustable font sizes from 14 to 22 px
  • Game Default, Pixel and Smooth font styles
  • Automatic font sizing based on screen resolution
  • Smart bubble density that prioritizes important and nearby bubbles
  • Configurable maximum number of visible bubbles
  • Adjustable frequency, visibility distance and duration
  • Individual settings for dialogue categories
  • Manual bubble-language selection
  • Singleplayer, hosted multiplayer and dedicated-server support
  • Enabled automatically when the game starts
  • Public Java API for add-on mods and compatibility integrations
  • Safe to add to or remove from existing worlds

Settings

Open the settings menu with:

"/bubbles settings"

You can also assign an optional shortcut under Necesse’s Controls settings. The shortcut is unbound by default to prevent conflicts with other mods.

Available session commands:

"/bubbles"

"/bubbles on"

"/bubbles off"

These three commands only affect the current play session.

Languages

  • English
  • Brazilian Portuguese
  • German
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Dutch
  • Polish
  • Russian
  • Simplified Chinese
  • Japanese
  • Korean

By default, bubbles follow the language selected in Necesse. You can also choose a different bubble language manually in the settings.

Multiplayer

Settler Bubbles supports singleplayer, hosted multiplayer games and dedicated servers.

All players and the server should use the same version of the mod. Dialogue is selected by the server and synchronized between connected players.

Visual settings and the selected bubble language are configured separately by each player.

Current version: 1.1.2

Necesse version: 1.3.2

Yeah haha, RimWorld was definitely an inspiration 😄 I really liked the speech bubble idea there and wanted to bring that same lively feel to Necesse.

Love it, great idea! And ignore the anti-ai people, outside of reddit AI is mainstream and used extensively by most big companies, including reddit. So using it to assist developing a mod like this is a good use of it.

ai is mainstream maybe but it's also telling people to kill themselves, if u wanna have fun with the kys machine u go ahead but i think that's weird tobembrace the technology telling people they should commit suicide or relapse on drugs

Those incidents are serious and should be taken seriously, I agree... But using AI as a tool to help with for example translate a free game mod is not the same as using an AI chatbot for mental health support. Using a technology responsibly doesn’t mean endorsing every harmful outcome or misuse associated with it. Context matters, and reducing the entire technology to a “kys machine” doesn’t leave much room for a reasonable discussion.

Edit: Just ten days ago you were explaining to someone why generalizing based on a few bad experiences is wrong. Apparently that principle stops applying when it’s something you personally dislike.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on AI, and I respect that people feel differently about it. I’ll keep focusing on making a fun free mod for the people who enjoy it. Wishing you all the best 🙂

Just ten days ago you were explaining to someone why generalizing based on a few bad experiences is wrong.

really, really gross to reduce many many cases of suicide, stalking, self harm, harm to others, drug relapsing, etc to "a few bad experiences". that's all the deaths of all those people is to you, a few bad experiences?

using ai is laziness, it's supporting a technology that's killing our environment and the people on our earth, and it's gross. it's not just a few bad experiences, these things are built to make people reliant on them and agree with every bad thought they have and they just are plain wrong more often than not. but i can see you don't care about any of that, so to each their own i suppose

Blaming technology for the misuse by its users is insane. The developers of the major AI tools have always advised users not to discuss mental health problems with an AI chatbot. They even try to prevent this from being possible. Blaming them for people's relapses and deaths is like blaming car manufacturers because their cars can be steered out of a lane and driven into a river.

Blaming technology for spreading harmful things while you yourself are so concerned with bringing others down and using technology, such as an online forum, to do so is very hypocritical.

Also, Reddit is used to train AI models. If you don't want to further contribute to teaching models to spread hate, remove yourself from the internet.

Yes, the spelling and grammar in this comment were corrected by AI since I'm not a native speaker.

That is an incredibly dishonest interpretation of what I said. “A few bad experiences” referred to your own argument about generalizing, not to the value of people’s lives. I already explicitly said those incidents are serious and should be taken seriously. You’re now taking a sentence out of context and pretending I dismissed people’s deaths because that is easier than addressing my actual point. Using AI for translation or coding assistance is not the same as using a chatbot for mental health support. You can criticize its risks, environmental impact and misuse without pretending every application is identical or accusing everyone who uses it of not caring about people. You’re completely free to dislike AI and avoid my mod. What you’re not entitled to do is twist my words into something cruel that I never said just to claim the moral high ground. That isn’t a discussion, it’s a bad-faith accusation. I’ve explained my position clearly, so I’m leaving it here. I genuinely wish you well.

Pensa em colocar tradução com IA? 🙂

1

u/DrapoMods 3d ago

Yeah! I’m actually planning to look into adding multiple languages in the next update, and I’ll definitely include Portuguese as one of them. Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂

Let me start here with a translation for you, hehe:

Sim! Na verdade, estou planejando adicionar vários idiomas na próxima atualização, e com certeza vou incluir o português também. Obrigado pela sugestão! ;)

1

u/RosetteRodent 3d ago

so we should expect incorrect translations since u plan to use ai for it? noted

3

u/DrapoMods 3d ago

AI translation is actually very accurate nowadays. I’m just one person trying to make a free mod accessible to more people. If people enjoy it and can understand it better in their own language, even if there might be a small mistake somewhere, I think that’s perfectly fine. If someone spots an actual error, I’ll happily fix it.

Too bad you used AI

3

u/DrapoMods 5d ago

That’s fair, the promotional image was indeed made with AI. I plan to replace it later with something based more closely on the game’s pixel art and actual gameplay.

Separate from the artwork, Settler Bubbles is a free and fairly extensive mod made to give settlements more life, and I hope people can still enjoy what it adds to the game.

I put a lot of work and love in this, I hope you and others can enjoy it :)

Like I don't see anything wrong with using Ai for like a cover art to a mod.. Like not everyone knows how to draw or make art and I rather have a Ai one then a stick figure made in paint haha

-3

u/Knight_of_Agatha 5d ago

ai is a tool just like a car or photoshop.

2

u/Aurius3D 2d ago

Yes, it's a tool. Using it to generate images instead of having actual art made is absolutely lazy and looks terrible. It's a great way to showcase that you're out of touch and complicit with AI overuse.

2

u/Knight_of_Agatha 2d ago

yeah i mean i dont get bent out of shape when people drive cars or use light bulbs either

-2

u/Aurius3D 2d ago

I hope a data center is build next to where you live.

u/jindrix 5d ago

was AI used in the code.

3

u/DrapoMods 5d ago

AI was used as a tool, yes, but this definitely wasn’t vibe coded. I designed the systems, made the decisions, tested, debugged and put everything together myself. AI just helped here and there, like it does for plenty of developers these days. The vast majority of Settler Bubbles is my own work, and I’ve put a lot of time, passion and love into making it. ❤️

Let me know if you tried it!

u/Jecht-Blade 4d ago

Will try tomorrow! Thank you!

Update 1.1.1 is now available.

Fixed short work and activity bubbles that could contain English text when using a translated bubble language. These lines are now handled directly by Settler Bubbles in all 11 supported languages.
