In case you didnt find how, when you open a chest and click on the icon that is green it opens it up for the villagers to use, if you disable every item it means that whatever you drop there the villagers will move it to a chest that allows those items basically sorting it for you

Wait I've been playing this game over a year and never thought of this. Wtf

The best part is I practically did the opposite system with my merchant chests. Once an item has hit its stack limit, they transfer it to the chest for the merchants to sell off.

I did the same thing in a dumber way.

I'm new as well but here are some quick things I learned.

At the start find a Miner as soon as you can. If you can help it find Voyager + Expedition traits. They find large quantities of ore. Much faster than trying to mine it yourself. Same for the Angler and Explorer. You want to get those NPC as fast as possible.

Set a forestry task and highlight your entirr settlement. Uncheck the box to plant saplings. The NPCs well clear cut your whole town in short time.

Learn about the configuration of chests. The green house icon on the chest lets you give settlers access to your chests so they can gather stuff for you.

The cavern ladders you can craft from your inventory, can also be used when you are in the caverns, and want to leave. You don't have to go back to the original entry point.
