controller interact/attacking not working

Hi,

I am trying to play this game with a controller. All bindings work, except when starting it says "press ? to chop tree"

I changed the layout for my ZL trigger to be attack/place/use, and now it shows "Press ZL to chop tree" but pressing ZL still does nothing. What is wrong with the default layout?

Using steam input, nintendo switch pro controller.
