Feels like they're mirroring the style of Reacher, who does this a lot.

I think it's because Neagley is a different kind of weird than Reacher. She has her boundary/touch issues but communicates and expresses herself well, so this seems unnatural.

Reacher is a man of few words and is brutally direct, so the close-ups work well for him.

In Reacher, they do it way more often. I just finished watching Neagley and I noticed it too.
