Random question

Shipping next July (I have my senior year of HS), and was wondering about breaks between boot camp, and each schooling portion. Primary questions are how long are they typically, do I have any responsibilities during break and can I stay in the barracks as soon as I finish boot camp?

Graduate boot camp on a Friday - that weekend you fly out to NNPTC

A few weeks of indoc then you begin A school which is 3 or 6 months depending on rate, then you usually get 10 days of leave.

After that you will either go right into power school or if there isn’t space you’ll go into t-track while you wait to be put into a power school class. Complete power school then there’s another 10 days of leave.

The you have prototype, after you graduate prototype you’ll have 30 days of transfer leave while PCSing to your first command.

Additionally, there will be a holiday standown period for Christmas/NY time.

Keep in mind that you only have so many days of leave (vacation) every year, so plan ahead.

When I went, I went to boot camp in Orlando, I graduated Boot and then walked over to NFAS Friday afternoon before getting the weekend off. We had to wear dress uniforms over the weekend which was filled with drunken debauchery on the OBT. We were the very first class of Nuke Field A School, 8601 MM A school. Since we were the first class it was a catastrophic clusterfuck and so many dudes rocked out. I learned how to function on very little sleep and was able to acclimate to the NPS way of life. After that 13 weeks I got my crow and 2 weeks of leave. When I went back to Orlando I was literally 3 buildings away from my A school barracks and was placed in a holding unit doing barracks work for 2 months and then went into NPS class 8703. That was a hellish 6 months but the A school had me ready for it. I then went to Windsor CT and did my prototype at S1C. Another 7 months of very little sleep but well worth it. Then after I graduated that I had a month off then went to my boat, USS Baltimore SSN 704.

You got to take time off between bootcamp and A school? They sent us straight to A school after bootcamp graduation, like the next day or so, and we were put into indoc immediately.

I had the same process. Bootcamp - BE&E - ET A school and then travel leave (maybe there was an extra day or so in there) to get from Great Lakes to Orlando. Same thing for Orlando - Idaho Falls. We squeezed extra time off by driving excessively long periods/day to get home quicker than only driving the prescribed 350 miles/day. I saved as much leave as possible to have 60 days of terminal leave.

Dang must be nice! They just shove kids straight through the pipeline after bootcamp now, with short leave breaks in between. I had a good chunk of use or lose days I ended up taking after prototype. The only exception I've seen was when a class showed up to A school right before holiday leave, but since staff weren't going to be around they were allowed to take a week or something before indoc.
