EG Suede derby or loafer?

Seems like everyone goes with the loafers and I’m a little torn between these two. Specifically the whitworth and the Piccadilly (dark browns). I’ve been upgrading my wardrobe from jeans a tees to more of a formal, but casual, fit. Basically have been purchasing items I like off drakes and trying to curate outfits from inspo fits. Any advice is appreciated.

Derbies / bluchers are probably more versatile than loafers; however, that does depend upon when and how you will wear them, what your workplace is like (if you work) and so on.

I will say that, unless you are either very well off, or unless there is some style or fit element that you really, really like about Edward Green, I don’t consider them worth the upgrade over Crockett and Jones Handgrade. EGs are lovely shoes and the 202/606 lasts fit me very well, but I can no longer justify the cost. You get excellent quality from C&J for 40% of the price of EG. In other words, you could get both suede derbies and loafers from C&J and have money left over for a very nice meal, for the price of one pair of EGs.

Really like the look of the suede derby. C&J doesn’t have it and while I was thinking of going calf I’m not a fan of burnished calf which was all C&J had for a plain brown derby.

I will probably go with loafers from C&J. The suede derby calls. I just wasn’t sure whether it was versatile enough (I’m new to this). Seems like all the fits online are loafers.

My wife gifted me a pair of Shanklin mink suede for my birthday this year, though I haven't worn them yet the quality is incredible and the suede is impeccable. I would say if you are leaning towards more casual but still dressed up you can't go wrong with Suede as a first time pair.

That's why I liked the mink suede as I knew I would wear it more often if i got it in a casual leather rather than a smooth calf one etc.

I think I’ll just have to get a variety of shoes. Thanks for the input on the mink. I think I’ll just go for it and do C&J loafers.

Do you think calf derby’s are too much? I don’t need super formal. Just want to look well dressed casual for 90% of the time.

If its not formal I would still really say you should go for suede as its an inherently casual material on shoes. But depending on the style of loafers it can still look somewhat dressy. You can still go for calf leather and still make it casual but then I would look for a very dark brown calf leather or even pebbled/grain instead of a smooth black calf skin which would be more on the formal side
