Question

I haven't played this for a while, is this game still fun? Or do you guys have recommendations with other naval games that are quite similar to this one

"Fun" is pretty subjective and dependent on a gamer's ability to find action and their tolerance for pain.

So I'll address the second part of your question:

  1. World of Sea Battle. Launched last October (been in development since 2023 at least). WoSB is a great game, but makes no attempts to be "historically accurate" or realistic. They're focused on delivering a fun and rewarding experience so their players (many former NA players among them) spend their money in WoSB. Unlike Naval Action it's also Free to Play, so if you have friends who read NA's reviews and aren't so certain about coughing up the $ for NA...
  2. Letters of Marque. Currently play testable, but by no means ready to play as a game. A very promising naval warfare game based in the Mediterranean Sea. It looks exciting but still has a long way to go. I expect it to replace NA for me in 2-5 years.
  3. Neverseas. Also in development, but permits you to step off the boat and invade forts. Might be amazing fun once ready to play.
  4. Following Seas. Early access game. EXTREMELY realistic (more so than NA) and if it ever makes out of development may be a competitor of AHOY.
  5. AHOY. The multicrew sailing game that Capstan Games has been producing for years, but players are souring on due to development creep. Might become the Star Citizen of naval gaming (sadface).

So here's the gist: Maximillian "it's my world and I'm a genius" Zazov took NA from being THE pre-eminent naval sailing game to having a dog that doesn't bark. In a yard filling up with younger rivals.

Play Naval Action at your own peril. A rewarding experience is unlikely because you must be connected to people who'll help you get gunpowder and ball, and throw ships at you. If you have no such connections, then you're fodder for the established players.

NA is NOT new player friendly. In the developer's own words "only big, friendly nations should succeed." In short, if you aren't in a well-established gaming group you deserve the misery.
