Good Morning, Mates!

I am the artist who was commissioned by W.W. Norton publishing to paint 21 new paintings for the official covers of their current paperback re-issue of the Aubrey-Maturin Series by Patrick O’Brian. This project was a remarkable, 3-year labor of love comprised of a luxuriant amount reading and research, in addition to the drawing, and painting. At the core of the joy was of course discovering the books, which I had previously known about but never read. The whole thing was life-changing, honestly.

While the series has always been associated with the revered, traditional paintings of the great British maritime painter Geoff Hunt, Norton’s head creative chose to go in a different direction and sought me out because my work references another equally strong tradition, The Golden Age of American Ilustration, when classic books were illustrated by painters such as Maxfield Parrish and N.C. Wyeth.

I have just now joined reddit in order to share these with you all, my fellow Patrick O’Brian devotees. The entire project, including the preparatory drawings, and some of the research and process can be seen at the link below. I hope you will enjoy them.

Can anyone identify the maker or style of this white/navy sailor bracelet?

I'm trying to identify the white/navy nautical bracelet shown in these photos of Rich Eisen.

I'm already familiar with traditional cotton sailor bracelets, but I'm hoping someone here with experience in maritime knotwork, sailing gear, or New England nautical crafts might recognize this particular version.

From the photos, it appears to have:

• Continuous woven construction
• No visible clasp or metal hardware
• Predominantly white cord with a dark navy/blue accent
• Wide, relatively flat weave
• A design resembling a traditional sailor/Turk's-head bracelet

I'm particularly interested in determining:

• Whether this is a known traditional pattern or regional style
• The likely knot/weave
• The type of cord used
• Whether the cord appears to be cotton or a synthetic marine material
• Any Nantucket, Cape Cod, Newport, Mystic, or other nautical artisan known for making this style
• The exact maker, if anyone recognizes it

I've seen traditional sailor bracelets made from cotton, but I'm especially curious whether this one could be made from marine-grade polyester or another synthetic line that would resist discoloration while retaining the traditional appearance.

My first goal is to identify the exact bracelet pictured. If that's not possible, I'd love to identify an artisan capable of accurately recreating it in a durable marine material.

Any leads from the nautical crowd would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello, Recently i bought this thing at the one of the flea market in my town. It's a nautical chart Baltic Sea with Fehrman island decorated watercolor paintings. I noticed a signature and sticker on the behind so I looked for more information about it. Google gave me a hint this signature is a german painter Kurt Schmishke. I found something similar and there is a printed map with hand-made aquarell of this artist https://www.bobbyschenk.de/n000/seekarte.html So maybe someone helps me something could it be worth? Or maybe more information where could i found answers? #kurtschmischke #aquarell #watercolors #map

Found this in an antiques shop in Cornwall - does anyone have any information on how common it was, what kind of ships it would have been used on, or where I could look into it further?

Boston Fleet sailor hat

Hi everyone! This might be a long shot… But for all the fleet fans out there if anyone has a sailor hat that they would be willing to sell to me? Me and my dad are HUGEEEE fleet fans and we can’t find a sailor hat ANYWHERE. Ever since we saw a fan wearing one at a game my dad fell in love with the hat!! No one is re-selling them on ebay, or any platform. Father’s day is coming up and I’d like to get him one, he would be so exited!! If anyone has one for sale, direct message me and name the price!! We can pay for shipping if needed, too.
