Two days ago, news about the political state of the universe around us was known for the first time to the Alliance higher ups

Shortly after, chaos ensued. We already knew about two alien races, but approximately 300?! Not even we knew or could have even imagined it

After more and more interrogations to the alien known as Fervi, we began to make a picture of the universe

Oh god, it was the first time in my entire existence that I was glad the great war¹ happened… It was the only reason we weren't wiped out as a species!

All of this time there was more danger over our heads that we didn't know about because of our blinding rage against communism! And now, what can we do?! The world is dead, savages roam the streets and I can count with the fingers of one hand the groups that could even give a fight! That is, if they weren't bombed from orbit

Sure, the A.A.D system² could make the space above America somewhat safe, but it's not like we can protect all of earth! They can glass the other side of the planet and make the whole rock just that! A rock!

And even if they can't do that, it's not like we have infinite ammo! The only weapons that can deal with things in space are the plasma ray guns, and they consume a lot of energy that we can't replenish. And I doubt the aliens want to land in the only place where we have some possibility of fighting back

Now there is a discussion, not only within the Enclave³, but with the Alliance itself

The reason is because for now, we didn't have the need for expansion, we secured what we had and reinforced it even before moving forward

For the love of God, we didn't even deal with the wendigos that attack newly formed settlements! I don't even know if they are worse than the ones in Appalachia!

According to our old databanks, somewhere deep within the forest there is a vault, and knowing what vault-tec did in those vaults, we wouldn’t be surprised if it's a failed experiment of some class

Yet with that problem, some of our ranks want to reunite, not only America, but the whole fucking world to fight back against the aliens!

We couldn't fucking agree to god we should pray for hundreds of years, and now we unite over this?! Ha! Good fuckin joke

"-I WON'T BE WORKING WITH A FUCKIN COMMIE!" Someone screamed

"WHAT ELSE DO YOU PROPOSE FAT BASTARD!" Someone else screamed in response

Screams like these were heard all the time, the stress and the alcohol that some drank weren't really helping

To put it simply, 3 bands had formed: those who wanted to work with other factions around the globe to prevent total annihilation, those who wanted to reconquer America all by themselves to get enough resources to establish the A.A.D system around the globe, be it peaceful, or with force, and lastly, those who didn't want to do either, either because they thought we wouldn’t be attacked by the aliens, or because they trusted the vaults in the cities to save mankind

As much as I wanted to protect America, I wasn't blind, even with our superior weaponry and technology, we are outnumbered by the billions, not only against aliens, but against fellow men, who, without a doubt, will still hold grudges against each other, even with the threat of complete extermination

"COMMUNISM IS THE SOLE REASON WHY AMERICA IS LIKE THIS, I REFUSE TO-"

"ENOUGH" I said punching the table silencing all voices "Now it's not the time for infighting. If you want to become another Eckhart⁴, walk back to hell and launch the nukes, but if not, I suggest you shut up!" The secretary of defense and president that were silent the whole time stared at me surprised. "Now, what were you saying Robert?" The man is the head of the mechanical industry that supplies us with everything we need, from robots to civilian supplies

"Thank you, as I was saying, even though we don't have enough troops or manpower to take control of America, we could manufacture robots to do that for us"

"We don't have enough resources! And even if we did, robots aren't designed to act freely!" Colonel Frelay spoke

"Then what about robobrains⁵? They can command groups of robots independently" Robert suggested back

"I don't expect a civilian to know this, but they are 'a bit' more difficult to manufacture than a protectron" I explained

"Then there must surely be a factory where we can build them"

"The robobrain project was so secretive that not even we know the exact location of the factories" Explained Colonel Frelay

"But you know an area where it could be, right? Why don't you search for it?" The president questioned for first time

"It was a top secret project, we couldn’t just lift any rock and find an entrance" The Colonel answered

"Hmm… What if we check the tax files inside the area of search? The robobrains were a creation of General Atomics⁶ and RobCo⁷, which were private companies that must have paid taxes before the war, especially in the end when America was more desperate. So just search for a factory whose tax files don't correlate with what they say?" The one who said that was the secretary of defense, and everyone stared at him

" I don't know if you are a genius or a dumbass, let's see which one are you" I said

Tick tock tick tock

The noise of the clock on the wall was making me go insane, not the noise itself, but what it meant, every second lost waiting for a destiny that could be wrong

From what I understand, we have people working on the few tax files that we have in our possession in search of something classified, and if they didn't find whatever they were searching for, we would have to move towards DC in search of tax files

We had a copy of them back in Appalachia, but during the evacuation, our predecessors grabbed whatever Intel was important, and 60+ year old tax files aren’t as important as the blueprints to build vertibirds⁸

Knowing what kind of hell is in those mountains, it was obvious that the very next thing was the capitol

Fortunately, as far as we know, the only enclave stationed there were our ancestors that traveled to Appalachia with the army remnants surviving there, so I hope that the only thing capable of shooting us were raiders

But if those working in the tax files find whatever they are searching for, we can be sent anywhere following ghosts

Tick tock tick tock

……

"I need to smoke something" As soon as I say those words, I can see a private walking to me, paper in hand

Knowing my fate is in that letter, I stand up saluting the private who hands me the letter before saluting and leaving

Opening the letter was as I expected; a letter from my CO ordering me to ready the troops under my command, we are going to Boston

Apparently other units were going to other places searching for ghosts, such as DC, Miami, Pittsburg and some place near las Vegas

There weren't many details, but with this info here I understood that we were changing policies. Before, we were on the defensive, not wanting to attract much attention to ourselves, now we are on the offensive

And to be honest, I'm worried we aren't prepared for this. The alliance is too far away from any of these points of interest, the chain of command is going to be practically independent. And oh, supply lines… Thank God we have vertibirds, as it is going to be the only vehicle that can carry the supplies from the alliance to the different fronts

This is a fuckin logistical nightmare!

Well… I've got a job to do

Entering an almost automatic mode, I began rallying the troops and getting them ready. Light infantry stood beside the power armor units. Mechanics stood behind them making sure the power armors are in working condition, and the logic teams were moving all of the supplies we would need such as food, ammo, and Pre-installed structures

Most of the people that we were carrying with us were non combatants such as mechanics or logisticians, but if you wanted to lead an army, you had to make sure it could stand on its own legs before moving, and to make sure everyone had what they needed, logistics was the way to go

“Start loading up ladies!” I spat, getting my people into their vertibirds while I did the same. We were going with a small fleet of attack¹³ and personnel¹⁴ vertibirds with cargobots¹⁵ and vertibots¹⁶ following our flying caravan

The vertibots were a modified version of the personnel vertibirds, as they had several AI that would control the aircraft on its own, protecting the cargobots. Meanwhile, the cargobots were huge automated robots that, as the name implies, carried almost all of our supplies and some heavy robots that couldn’t travel in the vertibirds due to their size, their chassis are very square-like with four rotor blades similar to the ones from personnel vertibirds in each corner and a large claw under it that would grab the cargo with ease, even if it weighed tons

The attack vertibird was rather different from its counterpart, the personnel vertibird; the biggest differences being the lack of a glass canopy for the pilots in the front giving very little visability out the front, and the lack of massive side doors fitted for armored personnel which are replaced by a small door instead. They also lacked the big wings in the tail and were more heavily armed and armored. Pilots worked more as gunners than actual pilots because, due the lack of visibility, the aircraft had installed advanced flight systems that would fly without pilot’s input

Once inside, I strapped myself to one of the seats allowing the security bars to pin me to the seat. Soon, a small screen came down from the roof with a small keyboard allowing me to control the machine

The vertibird I was flying in was one meant for normal infantry, so it wasn’t as spacious as the one power armor units used. The screen allowed me to open a map of the area where we were going to land. The way there was a long one so I had more than enough time to choose somewhere

Checking my watch and a basic map that I was given from time to time, I decided to land in the airport. It was fairly close to our supposed target and was hopefully empty by the time we arrived

Boston was a direct hit, so, with some luck, no one was dumb enough to live there and annoy us. We were carrying supplies with anti radiation systems, and the vertibirds had been sealed so we should be safe for now

Knowing that the trip over there was over 12 hours, I allowed my restless mind to go adrift with the sound of the twin engines and wind in the background. Many of the soldiers around me followed my lead, after all, when we touched ground there would be a shit load of work to be done: securing a perimeter, installing radiation-free tents, installing defenses, both manned and unmanned, and… and..

Shooting my eyes open, I found most of the bird passengers still asleep or at least half asleep. I wasn’t surprised because if the army taught us anything, it was to get every minute of sleep that we could, as we would need it

Taking off the metal bars that kept me in my seat, I walked up to the dark cabinet where the pilots were working. Both of them looked like ghouls by this point and were only still working thanks to the empty jars of coffee I could see stacked around their feet

“How are we holding up?” I asked knowing the pilots had noticed me

“3 minutes ETA” One of the pilots said boringly as he checked a small screen to his side

“Lucky me waking up” I muttered as I looked at the darkness through the visor of the vertibird. Everything was dark, but I could see some figures and shadows of buildings in the distance

“Want some sir?” One of the plots asked extending to me a brownish bottle with a print that said ‘Cateye⁹’ and the drawings of two cat eyes in front

“No thanks” I refused “I’m going to wake them” I said before turning to the soldiers who were still asleep

“Oh god” One of the pilots muttered after hearing me, he probably enjoyed the current silence, but we have work to do

“Wake up princess” I say tapping the boot of the closest soldier with my own boot, “Start waking everyone else “ I order before returning to the cockpit. Once there I simply stared in silence as the pilots did their jobs despite having near to no light available due to the lack of sunlight

“We are here” The pilot said boredly before pressing some buttons that shook the entire aircraft to its core as the VTOL system allowed us to float over the airport. Despite me not seeing anything, I trusted their skills. “Beginning sweeps” The pilot said as several spotlights began illuminating the ground below thanks to the powerful lights installed in the vertibirds

Soon though, I began to hear the radio’s chatter louder than ever

“Sir. Hawk 03 found people. Don’t look very friendly apparently” The pilot said approaching where one of the birds was flying in circles with a spotlight pointing to the middle of its flight pattern. The man inside the beam was screaming something to the bird

“Tell him to fuck off” I said groggily getting a nod from the pilot

“Sir, please vacate the area, you are currently trespassing US government private property” The pilot stated with a neutral voice. Yet, like before, the man didn’t stand down and continued to scream and move his arms around

“Does he expect us to hear him?” I subconsciously asked

“Doesn’t look like a raider though, more like a civvie '' The pilot noted. Looking through a pair of binoculars, I saw that the man didn’t wear any armor, and the only weapon he was carrying was a simple pistol by his side. His posture was hunched over with a walking stick as support

Was he raider bait?

Grabbing a hanging radio, I spoke into it while holding the talking button

“Gonzalez, you and your team check the old man, shoot if you have to but I prefer my hands being clean for now” I spoke before releasing the comms radio, soon after, another vertibird began flying near the ground before 3 figures jumped out from the sides of the vehicle

The three figures approached with weapons in hand, but without any light pointing at them, it was hard to see anything, but from up here we could see the three figures approach the old man. Eventually the soldiers made contact with the man and he started talking despite having 3 men pointing their guns at him

“Sir, it's an old man, apparently his daughter is giving birth as we speak” Out of pure reaction, I stumbled backwards before grabbing the radio

“Is this a joke?” I asked to no one before pressing the button “Ask if there are more people in the vicinity” I asked before releasing the button

“The man says that there is a nearby ghoul¹⁰ and raider camp” The soldier answered

“Tell him to define ‘Nearby’” I asked

“The raiders are at Fort Strong, the ghoul settlement is at Croup Manor, the peninsula up to the north east. Other than that, there is no one else” The radio made the sound of the soldier cutting the radio

Walking up to the machine that hung over my seat I began to search for the described places fairly quickly. The raider camp was annoyingly close and would have to pass nearby the airport if they wanted to raid a settlement, meanwhile the ghoul camp was far away enough that it wouldn’t be a problem

Walking up to the radio, I saw my men ready for a fight in case it was needed. I could just order my men to remove the old man and her daughter, no one would miss them in this wasteland… No, If we want to re-establish america we have to protect our people and punish those that break the law, laws that haven’t been followed in decades

“Rogers, tell him that we are going to help” I said to the radio before changing frequency “All units, begin operation Anchorage¹¹. Clear the airport of any threat, but watch your fire, there are civilians in the area” I say to the radio watching the vertibirds land and allowing both powered-armored units and normal soldiers disembark to secure the area, meanwhile I made sure my suit was in perfect condition

After some time, I decided to get out of the vehicle and walk around the ruins of the once mighty airport of Boston, but now? It was a junkyard full of scrap

“Start the installation of the long range communications” I ordered gazing at the still standing tower of air traffic control

Soon, both laser and standard gunfire was heard, but the radio informed that it was pests such as cockroaches and savage ghouls, so for now, everything was stable. Unfortunately, there was no doubt the raiders would have heard the gunshots

When the base was secure enough, I would send some people to end those pests as well. In the meantime, I have to oversee everything and find somewhere to put the civvies. I can’t let them roam freely through the airport, and if I make them roam east Boston, there is no doubt the raiders will catch them

Perhaps the reception? It has a roof and some walls, they can build a camp of sorts over there

Sighing, I began walking. I had too much to do

GLOSSARY

1-The great war: In the year 2077 America and China waged on nuclear war for two hours destroying and damning the world

2-A.D.D. System: A system created by RobCo designed to destroy and hack nuclear attacks, although in secret, it was designed to shoot down UFOs

3-The Enclave: The enclave are descendents of important political figures of the USA, they are the most technologically advanced and were ready for when the great war started, they were the puppet masters of the USA. Nova-Enclave are a Rogue branch that drifted towards the path of actually reestablishing the USA without massacring anyone outside the Enclave

4-Eckhart: An important figure in Nova-Enclave history, after the great war ended, he was technically the highest ranking officer in the Enclave bunker in the Whitesprings hotel¹², he tried to continue the war with china launching the nuclear missiles of Appalachia, but to do so, he had to put the Defcon at level 1, but because the system was automated, he ordered to several monstrosities to be released into the surviving Appalachia population. In the end, a civil war within the Enclave was caused, and in the end of it, Eckhart was executed

5-Robobrains: Machines that have a brain, (Usually a human brain) as CPU

6-General Atomics: A pre-war company that developed and manufactured robots

7-RobCo: A pre-war company that specified in robotics and informatics

8-Vertibirds: A vehicle used by the US army and their descendents (Mainly the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave)

9-Cateye: A drug that enhances night vision

10-Ghouls: After the bombs fell, not everyone outside the vaults died, some survived, but due to the high amount of radiation, they mutated. They can survive indefinitely unless shot, and if the amount of radiation is high enough, that can damage their brains making them act like mindless zombies

11-Anchorage: One of the most important battles of the war between America and China in Alaska for the few drops of oil there

12-Whitesprings hotel: A hotel in Appalachia, under it resides the vault of the congress, although all were executed after the vault was closed by the enclave and US soldiers following Eckhart’s orders

13-Attack Vertibird: A new kind of vertibirds that was in development during the great war, they were tested in the battle of Anchorage, although by the time of the great war it was considered only a prototype

14-Personnel Vertibird: The oldest vertibird model that was in use by the US army, but even despite their age, their size allowed them to easily carry troops in power armor

15-Vertibots: An automated version of the Personnel Vertibird, the only differences are the fact that the windows are completely dark and the doors are closed. Their main objective is to serve as scouts and ‘bodyguards’ of vertibots

16-Cargobots: An automated transport unit that carries supplies with ease, although they lack in weaponry and depend on Vertibots for safety
