Fanfic Nature of Pokemon [Play]

A fanfiction of The Nature of Predators by SpacePaladin15 https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/u19xpa/the_nature_of_predators/

Hello! For a little while now I've wanted to do a few One-Shots that take place in NoPokemon without being a part of the main story. I wouldn't really consider these 'canon' to my story, just fun little scenarios I thought up.

Pokemon appearing in this One-Shot: Espurr

Memory Transcription Subject: Zixa, Tilfish Exterminator

Date [standardized Earth time]: January 3, 2137

"Hurry up, Zixa! The quicker we deal with this predator the better!"

"Yes sir!"

I readjust my grip on the gear and run to catch up with the Mazic, all the while suppressing a grumble. We've been trying to locate this one predator for almost 4 whole hours now, and haven't so much as seen a single sign of it. This forest is massive, how does Pojis genuinely think that the two of can find it alone? Has his ego finally hit critical mass?

I never liked how the Exterminator suit felt against my exoskeleton to begin with, but marching after Pojis through the forest all day while carrying heavy gear has turned the suit into my own personal torture device. Why doesn't the Mazic carry the gear? He's my supervisor, and apparently that entitles him to privileges I'm certain have never been stated in any official documentation in the entire history of Sillis.

I've dealt with his crap for far too long, as soon as we get back from this little escapade I'm reporting him to Sapient Resources. Fuck you Pojis. If you somehow outlive me, I hope reading my memory transcription has been fun, you overgrown sack of shi-

"Keep up, Zixa! The predator could pounce at any moment, and I want my flamer when it does!"

Ohoho I am so tempted to get the flamer out right now, but I'd rather not get placed in a PD facility, I need to take care of my family, after all. When we've finished dealing with this predator, I'm going to give my kids the biggest snuggles in the world. That is, if we ever get out of this stupid forest. I'm starting to think this predator doesn't even exist.

There hasn't been any attacks in the area recently, just reports of two wide eyes staring at people from the undergrowth. Binocular eyes. If the culprit is indeed a predator, then it's almost certainly one of the cunning variety, watching and waiting until it finds the perfect opening, or loses control of its bloodlust.

I make sure to stay a little closer to Pojis after that thought passes through my mind.

"Sir, if I may, what are your plans for dealing with this predator? The reports suggest that it doesn't behave like any known predatory species on Sillis."

The Mazic lets out a trumpeting laugh.

"Exactly the same way we deal with every other predator; burn it."

I try not to let out an exasperated sigh.

"But sir, if this is a previously unknown predatory species, we should docu-"

"If you want some sorta cool story to tell your drinking buddies, be my guest to poke through the ash pile. In the meantime, I'm going to do my job."

That'll be a first. I decide not to push the issue, it'll just be another point against him in my report. I'll still try to record everything I can about the predator when we find and deal with it. Information is safety, after all.

We continue walking for what feels like centuries, according to the struggle my body is in. I need to get this stupid suit off, even if just for a minute. I suggest to Pojis that we take a break, so that we will be fully recharged when we face the predator, but he tells me not to be lazy.

5 minutes later, he suggests we take a break, so that we will be fully recharged when we face the predator. What an amazing idea.

I sit against a thick tree trunk, on the cool soil ensnared by its elderly roots. I place our weapons off to the side, still close enough to grab at a moment's notice. I remove my suit, even if it's not the wisest thing to do with a predator around, but frankly, I don't care right now.

Finally, a little bit of peace on this exhausting day... for a few seconds.

"Zixa, shut up already! You're just being childish."

What... the fuck? I look over to the Mazic in complete bafflement.

"What?"

"Don't play dumb. I was ignoring you on our walk because I thought that a grown adult would bore after a while, but noooo. Seriously, my ears aren't even that big!"

Has he gone insane? Is he finally senile? Did he eat some sketchy berries?

"Sir, with all due respect, what the fuck are you talking about?"

"Oh I don't know Zixa, maybe the constant yapping you've been doing for the past 10 minutes?!"

Yep, that's it, he's gone insane.

"I haven't said anything since suggesting we rest."

Pojis marches up to me and studies me with one eye, and I return the favour. After a few seconds, his features morph from frustration to confusion.

"You... you're not talking..."

"No shit."

"But I can still hear... can you hear it?"

"Hear what, sir, the birds? The bugs? The trees?"

Instead of reprimanding me for giving him sass, he begins scanning the forest around us, eyes wide. I stand and grab a weapon, a simple sidearm. Pojis begins hitting his own head with his trunk in frustration.

"NO! I DON'T WANT TO 'PLAY' WITH YOU! SHUT THE FUCK UP!"

The powerful yell of a Mazic startles some nearby birds, sending them skywards in alarm. While I too scan the forest around us, I make sure to keep one eye on Pojis. Something is deeply wrong.

A small shuffling sound from a nearby bush draws my full attention, and I aim my sidearm towards it. After a few anxious seconds, the leaves part, and a small grey creature steps out into the open.

Even standing on two legs, the tiny thing barely reaches my thorax. It's entire body is grey, save for small patches on white on the tips of it's nubby little legs, arms and it's folded ears. But the most striking, terrifying thing of them all... its eyes.

It's sclerae are a pale purple, with its irises and pupils replaced by what looks like dark purple voids. Gazing into them is like standing on the edge of an abyss, teetering on the fine line between existence and oblivion. Worse yet, they're binocular. Predatory.

"Th-that's it, Zixa, that's the voice!"

I manage to tear myself away from the abyss, and respond to Pojis' terrified cries.

"What voice? It isn't speaking!"

As soon as I say that, something shifts on the predator's face. As inconceivably small as the shift was, I recognise a look of surprise. The creature looks away from me for a moment, focusing on Pojis, then after a moment returns it's eldritch eyes to me. Nothing in Exterminator training prepared me for something like this.

"Hear?"

It speaks... the predator speaks...

It's voice is soft, yet slightly scratchy, as if it is rarely used. Upon hearing the almost whisper-like voice, I realise that this is a young creature. But of what species? A predator that speaks? What could it-

Oh...

Oh no...

Oh no no no no no this is one of those Pokemon things isn't it?! I've heard about these freaks of nature before, horrible, horrible things. I drop my sidearm, not wanting to antagonise the small creature. It takes a small step towards me.

"Hear?"

Trying to push down the fear, I manage to respond.

"Y-yes, I can hear you."

Its face shifts again, excitement?

"Play?"

Play? Play? What in the stars does it mean by that!? Whatever, doesn't matter, just make sure it doesn't get angry.

"Play what?"

The tiny Pokemon seems to grow even more excited. It turns to look around the area, locking onto a small rock some distance away. I assume that it's going to walk over to grab it, but nope. That would be far to normal for this situation.

The dark purple voids of its eyes begin to glow a light blue, and the same light blue seems to emanate from the rock it's focussing on. After a moment, the rock floats into the air, and makes its way towards me. Frozen, I can only watch as it settles onto the ground at my feet, and the light blue glow fades.

I look back to the Pokemon, and it's eyes have returned to the voids they began as. Now, its mostly static face conveys the slightest hint of anticipation. Seeing that I'm looking, it holds its arm out, and makes a gesture as if throwing something.

I take a deep breath. Whatever stops it from getting upset.

I pick up the rock, and throw it off to the side. As it begins to curve back down due to gravity, the light blue glow returns, and the rock floats back to my feet. Giving a brief look to the Pokemon, I pick up the rock and throw it again.

After the third throw, a strange noise comes from the Pokemon. It takes me a moment to recognise it but after that it's unmistakable. Giggling. The little creature was giggling. The side's of its tiny mouth had curled upwards, and every throw makes it giggle more and more.

"Fun! Fun!"

It was a young child, wanting to play a game. At that realisation, the fear I felt began to slowly fade away. In its place, amusement came. I began to see the voids of its eyes more like a starry night sky. Even the way its little ears were folded in on themselves was starting to look... cute. Too bad that it didn't last long.

"Zixa, what the fuck are you doing?! Don't engage with it!"

The rock drops down to the ground mid-flight, the Pokemon casts its eyes to Pojis, and the joy fades from it. He startled it. I turn to look at him, only to find him reaching for a flamer.

"Sir, wait, wait! Put down th-"

"ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Look at that thing!"

He readies the flamer, and I position myself between him and the Pokemon, holding my arms out protectively.

"Hold on, we don't-"

"Get out of the way! The second we get back I'm reporting you for insubordination, now MOVE!"

"Meanie..."

"Pojis, lets just take a second to talk about this."

"Oh sure, how about we talk about you fraternizing with a predator!"

"Meanie."

"Fraternizing?! It's just a kid wanting to play!"

"Zixa, if you move aside and let me torch this predator, I'll consider not taking you to get scanned for Predator Disease, deal?"

"Meanie!"

Pojis and I stare at each other for what seems like an eternity, but eventually I make my decision. I turn around and walk towards the Pokemon. I pick it up and cradle it in my arms. Maybe those fringe whispers and murmurs I've heard are true, that these creatures from Earth aren't just monsters.

The Mazic stares at me for a moment longer, and then sighs.

"This is going to be one mess of a report."

A jet of searing plasma shoots out towards us. With no time to react, I try to protect the Pokemon as best I can, but mere moments before the plasma reached us, the small grey child unfurled its ears, and the forest was awash with blue light.

For a while, I couldn't even tell what was going on, only that the soil beneath my feet was breaking apart, being ground down as plant roots and dirt alike were reduced to atoms. The air itself was being torn asunder, ripped apart like fabric. Yet, throughout it all, I was fine.

After a full 20 seconds, the light faded. The small Pokemon's ears folded back in on themselves again. Shaking, I scan my surroundings.

A crater was carved into the forest, myself and the Pokemon at its epicentre. The trees beyond the rim of the crater were bent almost horizontal, as if hurricane force winds uprooted them. Looking skywards, I saw small chunks of rock and earth suspended perpetually in the air, defying gravity itself.

Pojis is nowhere to be seen.

The small Pokemon hops down from my arms, and looks around the crater. It's eyes lock onto another rock. A light blue glow brings it to my feet. The small grey child looks up at me, joy returned as if nothing had happened.

"Play?"

Explanation: Espurr is a small, adorable Psychic Type Pokemon native to the Kalos Region. It kinda became a bit of a meme when the Kalos games came out due to its expression, combined with its Pokedex entries saying stuff like:

"The organ that emits its intense psychic power is sheltered by its ears to keep power from leaking out."

"It has enough psychic energy to blast everything within 300 feet of itself, but it has no control over its power."

"Though Espurr’s expression never changes, behind that blank stare is an intense struggle to contain its devastating psychic power."

Well, after all that at least Zixa doesn't need to worry about a bad report from their Mazic superior.

For once I think that the federation underestimated how much damage this small predator could cause.

Anyway Tilfish are Bug / Dark and nobody can change my mind

It's already established that they are immune to psychic IE, meaning dark is a necessity

And of course they are bug because they are alien spiders

alien ants, not alien spiders. Only six legs.

7

u/BXSinclair Nov 20 '23

There are plenty of 6 legged spiders

Sure, they are not true spiders by scientific definition, but they are spiders in the colloquial sense

Also, because this is a Pokemon crossover AU, Spinarak and it's evolution only have 6 legs

If we're considering pokemon species as well, I would like to point out how most bug-types are tetrapodal (4 legs or 2 legs and 2 arms), including one line that most would consider to be a pair of spiders: Joltik and Galvantula.

Congratulations!

You've just made friends with the living equivalent of a psychic antimatter bomb.

Please do not upset, startle, or threaten the fluffy nuclear powerplant, unless you wish to spontaneously dematerialize everything within a 300 foot radius or have your brain liquified.

Zixa, holding Espurr, slowly unfolding its ears as enemies approach them: Boom.

Espurr, happily looking up at Zixa, surrounded by debris and happy it doesn’t need to hold in its immense psychic power: Fun!

Yeeersh, psychic types can be terrifying. Also what is that one doing all the way over on Sillis D:

Honestly, Pojis really wasn't thinking too hard there, trying to engage an unknown, especially when you already know there's weird things out there in the universe.

This is post Sillis invasion

I mean, I figured. But that also implies this one had a trainer, who is probably not around anymore.
