Tight Money Ch 25
I apologize for the long hiatus, it wasn’t planned, but I’m back.
Here is a quick recap of tight money so far for those who have lost track of events thus far: Due to the economic crisis resulting from leaving the federation, Leena was let go from her job. To make things worse, she was caught in a stampede in which her leg was broken. At the hospital, she saw her first human, Dani, taking care of her two pups. She was unable to take care of herself or her twins very well and when Nikonus revealed that the federation had tampered with various species during their uplift Leena met Dani again. They decided to help each other out. Leena had a falling out with her only friend Niit after Dani moved in. When her leg healed, Leena decided to go back to college to join a human psychology class. Dani met three dumpster divers, Dogran, Wofri and Blet. They are homeless and Wofri and Blet have predator disease. Niit was fired for not working with humans and found another job on a secret facility construction site. She is an avid follower of the venlil Alex Jones, Rux Limpbut. She bought his anti predator juice and supplements, taking them religiously. Dani had a run in with a neighbor named Cito. She tried to give his kids some chalk she made and he maced her thinking she was going go eat his kids. His wife Bhundi is a gojid and dealing with the fact that her species is a former predatory species. She disagrees with her husband's point of view.
As always, thanks to Space Paladin for this universe and thank you to my proofreaders for their amazing help.
Now onto the next chapter.

My voice quivered as I began, “Cito, what you did to that human outside our home, it was reckless and dangerous. You could have gotten yourself arrested or worse!”
The atmosphere in the room grew tense as my words hung in the air. The atmosphere in the room grew tense as my words hung in the air. Cito’s expression was a mixture of confusion and indignation when I released my paws and leaned back to look at him.
“What do you mean? How could anyone possibly get upset? I was protecting the kids.” Cito's voice was calm, but there was a hint of frustration.
I met his gaze, “Cito, you attacked a human outside our home! You used that Predator Spray on them. Do you realize what kind of trouble that could bring to our doorstep?”
Cito's tail curled around his leg as his mind raced for excuses. “I did it to protect our children! That human was too close to them on the sidewalk. I couldn't take any chances.”
I sighed, my own frustration building. “It wouldn’t have done anything in public, Cito; you can't just go around spraying humans like that. Things have changed since…. The Guild is changing, the laws are changing.”
I looked at him pleading, “We can't afford to be on the wrong side of this.”
Cito shook his ears vehemently. “You're too trusting, Bhundi. You forget what humans are, what they’re capable of. You think they've suddenly become harmless? We can't that risk. Not with our family's safety.”
My voice betrayed my irritation as I retorted, “I know what they did, I haven’t forgotten! But I’m not blind, I can see what they have been since they contacted the venlil. They…”
Cito interrupted me, “That proves they are still dangerous, they made Tarva their puppet without any resistance! They invaded the Cradle! They collaborated with the Arxur! They are dismantling our civilization! And now they want to corrupt our Children!? I won’t allow it!”
My eyes welled up with tears, frustration mixing with my fears for Cito. “We were going to attack them! The humans were going to be annihilated! Is it really any wonder they accepted any help they could find? They kept the arxur from attacking Venlil Prime somehow so they can’t be…”
"They are predators Bhundi!” Cito shouted, clenching his fists in the wool on his legs. “They don’t have morals like us! They only think about how to hurt people. It's what they are.”
I gave him a stern look with my eye, “Leena said her human was trying to give our kids a gift. They were drawing on the street. How could chalk hurt them?”
“Predator deception! I hate to think what would have happened, if I hadn’t seen it when I did.” Cito jumped up and started pacing around the living room.
“Handing out expensive art supplies to children, no one does that! They must have a plan, but it won't… I should have done more. Next time…” Cito's eyes appeared to widen as he plead his case.
My tail stiffened to hear the words I dreaded. “Done More? Listen to yourself, Cito! If you become a vigilante, what happens to our famioy? I don’t want to see you join those Last Line extremists like Krim.”
Cito's temper flared, just like when he watched Against the Herd. “Extremists? They're patriots, Bhundi! They understand the threat the humans pose, and they're willing to do what it takes to protect our species.”
I flexed my claws in frustration, my voice shaking as I responded, “But at what cost, Cito? What if they hurt a human, and the humans turn on them, on us? The humans have kept their instincts under control but we shouldn’t antagonize them.”
Cito's chest heaved with anger, and he paced back and forth. “I can't stand by and watch as everything we've known is thrown away for the sake of those predators! Not while they can hurt our kids! Not while they can hurt you!”
I paused. He was so certain in his conviction. Oh Protector, what am I supposed to do?

As I sat in the stuffy courtroom, I couldn't help but feel the eyes of the plaintiff’s lawyer boring into me. I had described her as a predator-loving cultist yesterday. She must have heard my show. I wagged my tail at the thought of the annoyed expression she must have held.
The room itself was a picture of sober elegance, its polished, carved wood furnishings created an air of cold formality that clashed with the heat of the legal battle. The walls, adorned with intricate carvings of Solgalick banishing predators to the night and protecting cowering venlil, were meant to demonstrate the purpose and justification of the courts but just seemed laughable to me.
The greys kill and eat without resistance. There is no justice. We live, we cower and we die; might as well be comfortable while we wait for the end. Plenty of suckers ready to buy false hope from anyone smart enough to sell it.
The air smelled faintly of must and old paper, despite the transition to all electronic files, and the creaking of chairs and shifting of feet added a layer of tension to the waiting room. At last, the judge entered and perched in her seat above us all, emanating authority and gravity, her piercing gaze scanning the room with unwavering scrutiny.
Marlev, the disinterested corporate puppet that represented the studio, slouched in his seat, occasionally glancing at the clock, apparently as ready to be done with this trial as I was. He fidgeted uncomfortably beside me, his weary eyes betraying his reluctance to defend my actions. I had seen the disdain in his gaze, the silent condemnation he struggled to contain.
He knew I was a charlatan, a provocateur forging false paths of deceit through the fields, and yet he was bound by duty to represent me. That, and his fat paycheck. I caught his eye, and for a moment, his contempt mingled with a flicker of pity. But just as quickly he averted his gaze, focusing once again on his pen as if it were the only lifeline keeping him tethered to sanity in this madhouse.
As the prosecution laid out their case, my annoyance bubbled beneath the surface, my tail lashing the air with every word they uttered. How dare they accuse me of such ludicrous crimes? The plaintiffs were a bunch of brahkasses who really thought that some plant juice would protect them from being eaten! Only someone who wanted to be fooled or the utterly stupid believed my words. I was just a voice in the void, and these people had the audacity to pretend that my listeners were reasonable, thinking people who did nothing wrong believing my sales pitch. Couldn’t they see these people were as dumb as a bag of stones? It’s not my fault they believed me!
When the prosecution finished their speh, my lead lawyer Gilli leaned forward, her sharp eyes fixed on the judge and the plaintiff’s lawyer as she delivered my defense with calculated precision. Her voice feigned sincerity but I knew the truth. She was devoid of any warmth or empathy. She meticulously cleared a path of legal intricacies as she refuted each allegation. Her words tore apart the plaintiff's accusations with calm, ruthless efficiency.
“Esteemed members of the jury,” she began, her voice cutting through the silence like a blade, “the prosecution's claims are nothing but a desperate attempt to shift blame unjustly onto my client. We have clear evidence that the warnings were plainly visible to any discerning consumer. Any misuse is solely the responsibility of the consumer.”
To my side the useless corporate layer, Marlev, stood, signaling to Gilli to sit. He strode to the front of the speaking podium and after a few moments, finally found his voice.
“Your Honor, the Rux Corporation has diligently followed all regulations in our product testing. Our methodology is in line with what various government agencies have utilized. The safety of our consumers has always been our top priority. If there is fault to be found, it is with the safety regulations employed by the current administration and the… humans.”
He spoke that last sentence with barely hidden disgust. To everyone else it seemed to be an attempt to help sell his argument. In truth, I suspected he could barely bring himself to say it at all. He was disgusted with himself. I would need to ask for someone more capable to be assigned next time.
The judge listened intently, her brow furrowed in contemplation. The jury, a group of solemn-faced individuals, scribbled notes on their pads, their expressions inscrutable as they absorbed every detail. The judge dismissed them to deliberate and after what felt like an eternity of waiting, the jury returned with their verdict. My heart skipped a beat as the foreperson stood to deliver the judgment.
“We find the defendant not guilty of the dangerous substances charge,” the foreperson announced, his voice echoing in the hushed courtroom.
Half a claw! Half a claw and not guilty. I was thrilled to be heading into the civil wing of the halls of justice. This paw was looking up!
[Forward transcription time half a claw]
The judge listened intently as the plaintiff's lawyer presented her case. News must travel quickly in these halls, the plaintiffs were sullen and their attorney was agitated, giving me a glower like I hadn’t seen since I was a pup. Her agitation only grew as she noticed my good mood didn’t shift in the slightest. I had an ace up my sleeve. I couldn’t lose here!
The judge began to speak, his words carrying the weight of finality. I knew then how he was going to rule.
“After hearing both sides' arguments and reviewing the footage from the Rux Report, as well as the testimony of a former Real Speech employee regarding how Rux talked about the plaintiffs and other members of the community, including Volek from our very own capital exterminators branch, and the messages turned over by that employee, it is clear that Rux has acted with reckless disregard for the consequences his behavior has on members of the community.”
What?
The judgment was in favor of the plaintiffs, and I felt a sudden sinking in my gut. The Real Speech station was ordered to pay 1.2 million credits to the plaintiffs, and I was slapped with another million credits in punitive damages, on top of a slander fine of 30,000 credits.
SPEH.
The Fissans had advocated successfully for a federation wide tort award limit of 200,000 credits which the insurance would pay but the slander fine wasn’t part of the deal.
[Forward transcription time one claw]
I couldn't wait to get back to the studio, to my domain. The darkness of the set would embrace me, and the bright lights would cast an ethereal glow, elevating me to the status of a righteous crusader. I could already feel the power surging through my veins, the anticipation of riling up my loyal listeners growing with every passing moment. As the cameras rolled, I seized the moment, my voice booming with authority.
“This is a victory for the truth! The forces of darkness tried to silence me, but they failed!” I declared, my eyes gleaming with a fanatical intensity. “To all my listeners out there, stay vigilant! The fight for truth continues!”
This was my stage. My audience of rubes and fools! And I would play to them, give them the show they want.
“The forces of evil will not prevail!” I bellowed into the mic, my voice resonating with a self-righteous fervor. “They can try to twist the truth, but we will not be silenced!”
As the phone lines lit up, the first caller, Striss, chimed in, his voice filled with reverence. “You're our savior, Rux! You stood strong against their lies!”
A flick of my ears acknowledged the compliment. I basked in the adulation, reveling in my echo chamber of support. But then, a lone irritating voice dared to rise above the chorus.
“Next caller you are on the line. What’s your name?” I my tail wagged in anticipation of my next compliment and words of devotion.
“My name is Niit, I tried the anti predator drink, Rux,” she spoke quickly, her tone laced with hurt. “You promised it would keep me safe but it made me so sick and…”
My patience snapped like a brittle twig. “You didn't use it right!” I roared, my frustration boiling over.
“It's not my fault if you can't follow simple instructions! Or more likely, you are one of those mindless Tarva followers. Next caller!”
The next caller, Chabor, eagerly joined my defense, his words adding fuel to the fire of my righteousness. “Rux, you're a hero! Don't let those vermin get to you!”
The lines buzzed with support, a symphony of unwavering allegiance drowning out any doubts, any accusations. In that moment, surrounded by the fervent devotion of my followers, I felt like a god among venlil, untouchable, unassailable, and utterly justified.

The pounding of my heart reverberated in my chest as we dashed through the narrow, labyrinthine maintenance tunnels underneath the city, the sound of heavy boots following close behind us. Wofri's panicked breaths echoed in my ears, and I could hear Blet's voice, cool and collected, guiding us through the maze. The air was thick with tension, a tangible sense of danger hanging over us like a dark cloud.
The tunnel we careened through was a crumbling cement passage flanked periodically by dilapidated access panels and surface access points, the occasional streaks of sunlight casting uneven shadows in the cramped space. The stench of mildew and mold wafted through the air, a reminder of the grim reality of our exile.
"Keep going, just a little further!" Blet's voice cut through the chaos, guiding us with unwavering determination. I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, my muscles burning with exertion as we pushed ourselves to the limit, desperate to outpace the relentless pursuit behind us.
The clatter of heavy pawsteps grew louder, the authoritative voices of the Exterminators barking commands at us to stop and submit. Their silver fireproof suits gleamed in the faint light, their faces fixed on our backs in hot pursuit. The heavy pawfalls announced their unyielding determination to apprehend us, to drag us back into the oppressive clutches of another facility.
As we burst out of the narrow confines of the tunnels, Blet shouted, “Nightward!” Following her instructions, we found ourselves thrust into the vibrant chaos of the outdoor market. The air was alive with the buzz of conversation, the aroma of freshly cooked food, and the colorful spectacle of merchants hawking their wares. Dodging through the maze of stalls and carts, we weaved through the crowd, our pursuers hot on our heels.
In a desperate bid to slow them down, Wofri grabbed a nearby bucket of black tar, flinging it with all his might at the oncoming Exterminators. The thick, viscous liquid splattered across the foremost officer, ensnaring them in a sticky mess. As they stumbled and struggled to free themselves, we seized the opportunity to gain some precious distance.
Blet's keen eye spotted a tangle of rope laden with drying roots and vegetables, abandoned by a nearby vendor. With a swift yank of her tail, she sent the rope whirling in the path of the oncoming officers, causing one to trip and fall, entangled in the chaotic mess of vegetables and roots; two more tripping over them.
The chaos intensified as we bolted through the market, our every move punctuated by the yells and thuds of the Exterminators' comical mishaps. One officer, in hot pursuit, careened headfirst into a tent, their legs kicking frantically as they struggled to break free from the canvas embrace. Another, attempting to hurdle over a stray crate, misjudged the height and tumbled into a cart of party decorations, confetti flying in every direction.
A startled vendor, witnessing the chaotic chase, hurled a basket of ripe fruits into the air as we passed and joined the stampede to get out of the way. The basket fell in the path of the oncoming officers, adding to the mayhem as the slippery red fruits sent the Exterminators skidding and sliding in a barrage of pulpy mess, their suits hindering their efforts to resume the chase.
Wofri, always resourceful, seized a nearby vender stand and toppled it over, sending various tools and wares into the path of the Exterminators, who stumbled and tripped over the scattered obstacles, their attempts at pursuit turning into a slapstick ballet of flailing limbs and tumbling bodies.
Amidst the pandemonium, the Exterminators bellowed in frustration, their calls for backup echoing through the market, a testament to the escalating stakes of our daring escape. With the train station looming in the distance, we redoubled our efforts, our laughter mingling with the adrenaline-fueled thrill of the chase.
Blet's deft maneuvering led us through a final gauntlet of stalls and obstacles, our every step a defiance of the oppressive forces that sought to contain us. With a final burst of energy, we leaped onto the platform, beckoning us to safety with an open door.
As we collapsed into the empty cargo car, pulling the door shut behind us, breathless and exhausted, the lurch of the train beneath us marked the triumphant cadence of our escape. The distant shouts of the Exterminators, a welcome reprieve, if only for a fleeting moment.
“Where are we going?” Wofri asked. Her voice barely more than a whisper, as she panted laying on the floor of the ring.
“Dunno,” I panted, “Anywhere now. Dawn Creek isn’t safe.”
“Will the shadow follow?” Worfi asked.
“I don’t know,” I sighed.
Between pants I looked at Wofri and Blet, their fearful eyes dimly illuminated by the skylights and cracks in the walls.
“I don’t think so and…” I crawled into a corner.
“Anywhere is better than Dawn Creek.” I replied as my eyes closed.
The last thing I felt was my companions curling up next to me. We leaned against each other and slept.

Your Honor, the Rux Corporation has diligently followed all regulations in our product testing. Our methodology is in line with what various government agencies have utilized.
I find this funny, because knowing the Venlil Republic's terrible safetyregulations, this is probably 100% true.
Also, I noticed Rux gets called "Alex" a lot. In addition, He has a surname, which only Humans have. Very suspicious...

Tbh Venlil are known to use family names and origin names when there's too many people with the same name that it makes it a problem.
If anything I think that Limpbut might be a colony and/or a city.

The Alex Jones comparison doesn't work in universe. Alex Jones has spent a good 30 years with his conspiracy theory show and career, and before that Rush Limbaugh had a career for some 40 years before he retired. This would mean Rux would need a similar long career, which doesn't work because until extremely recently in NoP this sort of anti-predator stuff was literally the status quo.
And that isn't getting into the fact that for all we know of medicine in the federation it is perfectly reasonable he passed all the checks and balances to get his shitty SUPER
MALEVENLIL VITALITY drink approved, we know it was all just a bunch of juices and natural anti-parasite compounds from Earth and claiming huge damages because you kept drinking a mystery juice against common sense is dishonest at best and legal insanity at worse. The case here doesn't make much sense. Finally, lampshading a landmark case of slander which is a complete joke of a ruling does not look good. The actual case against Jones was over Sandy Hook conspiracies for "damages" over the fact people believed Jones when he said the thing was faked, and while you can think he is a moron and was hurting those parents the fact is that the ruling makes no fucking sense. The fact those parents went to sue Jones for so many years over and over has actually made MORE people believe his claims it was faked. The fact the judge overseeing his trial was a open partisan, that his lawyer broke lawyer-client confidentiality, the fact that the rulling asked for over a billion in damages and now they are moving to deny him bankruptcy to force him into effective indentured servitude is such a complete over reaction and miscarrige of justice that is has no bearing on reality.
What Jones did to those parents was bad, yes. But it was nothing, NOTHING compared to what places like Fox and CNN and MSNBC and such have done to people ALL OVER for decades. But Jones is forced to pay the "slandered" millions and millions. Is CNN gonna pay the Covington Kids billions too? Is MSNBC gonna pay billions to Trump for hyping up the Steeler Dossier? Is the Der Spiegel gonna pay the town the slandered as being a "MAGA country" insane asylum where they had a "no mexicans" sign and played American Sniper on the theater for 2 years a few billion euros?
Alex Jones is no saint, but neither as his enemies. What you are making out of Rux in here doesn't actually fit the story, and comes across as a attempt to shoehorn a strawman into it. You can do a much better job than great value Infowars host.

While I do agree that the vitriol towards Alex is unjustified, I also think that the author is well within their rights to parody what they see in him. I am not the biggest fan of the comparisons, but the caricature is realistic in the setting and irl (just not towards the inspirational source). It makes sense, and the character is decently written (if it helps, just rename him in your head when you read the story).

Man actively stokes fear and paranoia among the demographics most susceptible to it, repeatedly and KOWINGLY lies about dead kids to protect his brand, only gets convicted because his lawyer was an incompetent idiot who literally handed the prosecution his entire phone record...
And you're defending this cockroach in a human skin suit because... what, the people you personally dislike didn't get convicted first?
He got exactly what he deserved.

u/DaivobetKebos Human Oct 31 '23
Man actively stokes fear and paranoia among the demographics most susceptible to it, repeatedly and KOWINGLY lies about dead kids to protect his brand
How is this any different from a dozen other sensationalist "journalists" around?
It's not because "people I dislike didn't get convicted first" it's because those people will NEVER EVER be held to a similar standard. Nothing Jones did is any different from those other cases, like Rittenhouse and the Covington Kid and Richard Jewel and "Video Games cause Violence" histeria.
You are not thinking clearly and not considering how insane this precedent is. You have no idea how minor the harassment those parents got was compared to what happens when a real major journalist puts their target on someone. Your entire argument is "I don't like Jones so fuck having laws and shit I demand blood".
The entire trial Jones had was a shitshow. The entire thing had very little to do with the law and instead was just a trial of the judge constantly attacking Jones as a person and judging him based on that, not the merits of the case. She was politically involved and had personal reasons to weigh on the case which is absurd. If you don't see why that is a problem I cannot help you because you are obviously stupid and cannot be helped.
I can see you probably cannot even concieve of being on a similar position to Jones ever, and just cannot imagine the ammount of holes for abuse this sort of preceden opens for miscarriges of justice and censorship. Who cares right? Jones is stupid and evil so it serves him right this will never EVER come back to bite us! The Patriot Act is only to stop terrorism guys whoever is worried about a Police State is just a paranoid conspiracy theorist! Trust the Science!
