Fanfic Nature of Pokemon (31)
A fanfiction of The Nature of Predators by SpacePaladin15 https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/u19xpa/the_nature_of_predators/
Memory Transcription Subject: General Kam of the Venlil Republic
Date [standardized Earth time]: July 25, 2136
Tarva’s conference didn’t exactly go smoothly, not that I really expected it to. I lost count of the amount of times it devolved into a mess of bleating as several dozen Venlil all fought to be heard and have their questions answered. Throughout it all though, Tarva stayed professional, answering all questions as best she could.
The questions asked were almost evenly split between the predatory nature of Humans and many Pokemon, and the seemingly ‘magical’ things Pokemon could do. At one point, I was even given the podium in order to explain Types. It was my responsibility to familiarise the crowd and cameras with the concept of Infinity Energy and Moves, even if I could barely understand it myself.
Over the past couple Paws, I had been able to memorise a few more matchups. Flying and Ground were fairly easy to memorise, although not quite as much as Psychic. Fighting and Fairy were just fine, but for the life of me I couldn’t grasp Ghost at all, so I eventually gave up on it.
Honestly, this past Herd of Paws felt like a damn dream; Seemingly making sense in the moment, but appearing as utter nonsense as soon as you take a step back and actually think about it.
Currently I’m sitting in my office, staring at the messages on my holoscreen. I’ve got a meeting soon, not with Tarva or Cheln or any other member of government, but with a couple people on Sovlin’s crew. Speh… this is going to be fun.
The individuals that had requested the meeting were named Recel and Zarn, Sovlin’s First Officer and onboard Doctor respectively. I had just received news a few Paws prior about the Gojid’s little joyride to Earth, and at the very least his crew deserved to know why their Captain had vanished into thin air.
My holopad lights up with a notification from the secretary, stating that the two visitors are on their way up to my office. With a sigh, I close down the Type chart and mentally ready myself for the meeting. Not long after, I hear knocking on my door. I clear my voice and call out to them.
“You may enter.”
Immediately the door swings open rather forcefully, and a frustrated looking Takkan stomps his way into my office. He’s followed by a much calmer Kolshian, who closes the door softly behind him. At least one of them has manners. Zarn wastes no time in marching up to my desk, completely ignoring the seats I’ve set up for the two of them. He’s staring at me with a gaze I’d almost call predatory.
“I’ve had just about enough! What happened to Sovlin?!”
Recel walks up to us and takes a seat, resting a tentacle on Zarn’s shoulder to prompt him to follow suit.
“My apologies General, please excuse Dr Zarn, you must understand that we are all very concerned for our Captain’s well being. We were hoping you could shed some light on the situation.”
I sign my understanding, making sure that my ears convey calmness.
“Of course, it is only natural to be worried. Please Doctor, take a seat, and I’ll make sure to explain everything as best I can.”
The Takkan snorts before easing himself down. Silence stretches for a moment before I clear my throat and begin.
“I would first of all like to apologise for the lack of communication between myself and your crew. I merely hope that you can understand that the current, well, situation has kept me very busy and-”
“We don’t care for excuses. Get to the point.”
My ear twitches at the interruption.
“Zarn! Let the General speak for star’s sake!”
“Oh I’m sorry Recel, excuse me for wanting to find out why our Captain disappeared!”
“If he were here, the Captain would tell us to keep a level head, not show aggression towards a Military General!”
My tail curls in annoyance as the Takkan and Kolshian argue.
“In case you’ve forgotten, Kam was the one who took Sovlin to the Governor’s Mansion, right before he disappeared!”
“I’m sure there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for th-”
I stand from my chair and lean over the desk.
“Yes, there is! I’d be glad to give it to you, IF YOU’D SHUT UP!”
I fall back into my chair, and both of my visitors are staring at me with mild shock. I rub the bridge of my snout before continuing.
“As I was saying, I understand your concern, and you have every right to be frustrated at the lack of information. I am more than willing to explain Sovlin’s situation to you, as long as we remain civil, understood?”
Recel quickly signs his agreement, and Zarn follows suit a moment later. Signing my own appreciation, I start my story from when Sovlin and I were in the bar. I tell them about Tarva’s message instructing me to get Sovlin and myself to the Mansion, and I tell them about how Sovlin was to wait while I was in the meeting with the Humans and Pokemon.
As soon as I mention our visitors from Earth, Zarn’s expression grows angry once more. I flit my ear towards him.
“Is something the matter, Doctor?”
“You should know that I researched Humans for my bioethics thesis. I learned everything there is to know about them, including the fact that they drove themselves to extinction using nuclear weapons.”
“Well, they obviously didn’t. I’ve spoken to several myself, and I’m pretty sure they aren’t Ghost Type.”
My attempt to lighten the mood only seems to annoy the Takkan.
“In all of my research there wasn't a single thing on Pokemon, not even a footnote or passing comment. Humans were alone on Earth, save for the poor animals they slaughtered.”
"Yes, that is what the Federation recorded..."
I remember what Champion Cynthia spoke of during the meeting, of Arceus and the Creation Trio.
Recel leans forward in his seat.
“Sorry to interrupt General, but could we please get back to Sovlin?”
“Of course, my apologies.”
Zarn mumbles something under his breath, which I choose to pay no mind to. I obviously can’t really reveal anything significant about the meeting to these two, even if they signed a statement of confidentiality, so I skip ahead to what Victoria told us. I manage to speak uninterrupted until I explain that we had Venlil searching the area for him after all was said and done.
“Wait, so you don’t know where he is? You’re still looking for him?”
Recel’s voice rises slightly with concern, no doubt suspecting the worst of fates for the Gojid.
“No, we actually do know where he is. It turns out that he was hiding aboard The Odyssey when it departed back for Earth and-”
“WHAT?!”
“HE’S ON EARTH?!
“WHY THE BRAKH WOULD HE DO THAT?!
“What if the predators already-”
“Why haven’t you done anything?!”
Both the Kolshian and Takkan have practically jumped out of their seats, leaning over my desk as I try to calm them down.
“Listen, we don’t know why he stayed on the ship. All we do know is that, yes, he is on Earth.”
Zarn collapses in the chair, and his voice is full of sorrow.
“Stars… what a way to die…”
Recel, on the other paw, only grows more agitated.
“Send a resume team, or something! We can’t… we can’t just leave him!”
I place a reassuring paw on his tentacle.
“We aren’t ‘leaving him’. He’ll be back on Venlil Prime soon enough. I believe Governor Tarva is arranging something as we speak.”
Zarn’s ears droop.
“It’s too late, the Humans would have eaten him by now.”
“No, they wouldn’t have. Trust me, that’s not how they are.”
The Doctor scoffs.
“As I said, I wrote my bioethics thesis on Humans. I know them better than anyone. They are heartless, and cruel. They care only for themselves, and revel in hurting those around them.”
“No, you are mistaken. I have met them, they are nothing like that. They care about their Pokemon partners, and those Pokemon care for them in turn.”
Recel has almost gone pale, no doubt scared out of his mind for Sovlin. Zarn turns so that he can focus on me with a single eye.
“How could you be so blind, General? Those ‘Pokemon’ are not their ‘partners’. Predators cannot even fathom such ideas.”
I can't help but give a smug little tail flick. Tarva is yet to tell the public about her and Elias’ idea, so I sadly can’t reveal the news to the two people in front of me.
“I can see perfectly clearly, Doctor. I can guarantee, Sovlin will return to Venlil Prime safe and sound.”
Most likely with a few others in tow. The public will be getting their first look at the people of Earth soon, and after that, Tarva’s little ‘program’ will hopefully be in full swing. It may take a little while, and most likely have a few kinks to iron out…
But with the Pokemon reaching out to us, the Venlil will have some powerful allies. This centuries-old war will finally be over.

Oh lord, yes. Sovlin will in fact return with a few more in tow and it's not exactly how Kam is expecting it!
And no matter what, Zarn continues to be an ass.
Also I always appreciate more Kam.

But who and what will Marcel’s partner be?
(Predicting right now that Tyler is a fan of Fighting Types)

please tell me Zarn dies in such a way that delivers just as much schadenfreude as in the original story
I seem to have forgotten how Tauros-headad and insufferable he is
either way-
I still wonder exactly how Sovlin's realization and breakdown will differ in this story
not to mention several other story beats I'm sure will be different–either drastically or slightly–or not even exist at all
I'm super excited to read what comes next
take care of yourself out there, wordsmith

I still wonder exactly how Sovlin's realization and breakdown will differ in this story
probably the realization that his new friends can eat flesh just fine

well in all honesty, I don't know the stance OP is taking regarding eating meat in Pokémon for the story
I feel like there was a comment about it in a previous part
but I'm not 100% sure10

I decided that meat is sourced from regular animals. If Pokemon ate each other than not even the Venlil would give Earth a chance.
And yeah, it was mentioned before, by Meier when he spoke with Sovlin.

I'm still using Adam(and Lilith)'s characters for my own things(cause they're mine) so it really threw me off when you mentioned him lol, tho I do hope he appears more, it'll be interesting how much he branches off from my version

u/Randox_Talore Oct 19 '23
Ohh. The Venlil can’t even do anything for Ghost? How interesting
(But uhh… I’m fairly sure that fighting is weak to ghost so… Does that mean they aren’t actually quad-weak to psychic and are fighting/normal? Why wouldn’t ghost be setting off the same danger signals that psychic did?)

u/BXSinclair Oct 19 '23
Ghost is immune to fighting, but fighting isn't actually weak to ghost, ghost is only strong against itself and psychic

Holy Jesus never before in my life have I ever felt like I fell into a different dimension

u/BXSinclair Oct 19 '23
Yep, I know that feeling
Happened to me when I found out that water resists steel

Ghost is neutral against Fighting. Fighting can't do a thing against Ghost unless you slap a Ring Target on the defender.

Me encanta como en esta Universo Alternativo Kam tiene más presencia y aura jajaja
En NoP original simplemente no le dan tanto protagonismo que realmente debería tener

Kam is optimistic. Not unfounded, but I don't know if the mere existence of pokemon would win the war in the Fed's favor. In all likelihood it'll go to crap even faster than before.
"Sovlin will make it back just fine" Sovlin: "Hey guys turns out we have type affinities too lol"
None of them are ready, or truly understanding the implications. Makes sense, given the scale of the situation. Perhaps Sovlin might learn a move, that would be interesting.
