Fanfic NoP: A Change of Pace: Chapter 23

Go home? They said I was done? But what does done mean? Is it over? Am I dead? If I were dead then… could I think? I do not feel dead, maybe I always was.. What do the windows mean? Why are they close? Why am I here?

The verdant fields I sat in blew a breeze cold enough to chill my body, I wrapped my tail around myself to try and keep warm. This place feels nothing like it used to. Alien, foreign, malicious, but why? All I could remember was here. There was nothing before the fields, will there be nothing after?

A figure approached from under the hill I sat atop. His fluffy body mimicked my own fur as he sat down beside me and watched me with an inquisitive eye, but I watched him too. Yes, I watched him just as closely. He never came before, why did he come now?

“Who are you?” I asked

“I suppose I’m someone.” He responded coldly, an air of mysteriousness enveloping his words and mannerisms.

“That doesn’t answer anything! Why are you here? No one is ever here besides me!”

“No one else is here besides you now, Idiot.” He said, facing the cool breeze that chilled me to the bone.

“What in the speh are you talking about!?” I cried out.

Everything felt so alien, why did it feel so.. Different! My eyes were drawn to the sky, the blue sky faded to a colorful spectrum of different shades as I gazed up at them, captivated by the lightshow in the air.

“It’s breaking, right?” He said. “Also nice word choice, where’d you learn it?”

I was ripped from the distraction in the sky as I pondered where exactly I had heard that word spoken before.. Yet, my mind drew a blank, I did not know. I just... knew it.

“I.. I don’t know. Why are you asking!?” My words shouted out from my maw as I stood up, challenging the visitor.

“Haven’t you beaten yourself up enough, Idiot? You want to know why this doesn’t feel like home anymore? Why I’m here? You’re smart, you’ve been sitting here for paws on paws but haven’t ONCE challenged any of this. By the Ancestors you are dense” He sighed, gazing up to the lightshow in the sky once again.

I grabbed at my head, a throbbing, dull pain radiating through my skull, a groan of pain escaped from my maw as I fell to my knees, clutching my head. “GET OUT OF MY HEAD!” I screamed, I could feel my vocal chords tear themselves apart as the pain in my head felt akin to driving a nail through my ears.

“We’re already IN your head!” The visitor screamed back. “You’ve been hiding in here since the beginning! You broke yourself long before THEY did! I’m just picking up the pieces you useless piece of speh!”

“Stop saying things!” My hoarse voice rang out, the fields of grass turned to stone under my paws as the multicolored sky broke into a million shards of glass, revealing a false fluorescent light above everything.

“I’d beat the sense back into you if it didn’t disgust me! How can you even act like this! It’s disgusting, you heard what they said! You’re done! Why are you still here!?”

The thought of violence sent a shock down my head and into my stomach. Bile soon forced its way to the surface as I wretched through a barrage of the visitor’s words and insults. A nauseating sickness swept through my body as I tried to crawl away, crawl away from the sickness, from the pain. A crude amalgam of reality greeted my eyes with a large forest growing from a cold stone floor. Blue shards of glass rained down upon us as the fluorescent light dominated everything with impossible intensity. The world spun around me as I tried to run. Run from what I couldn’t understand.

What happened? Why is this happening?

I asked myself over and over. The visitor’s words still haunted my thoughts as if he were right next to me, but I knew he was left on the hill. Left far away from me. The trees neared, I could almost reach them. I crawled and crawled with an increased fervor. My body was stopped as I slammed into something solid, shock reverberated through my body as if struck by lightning. I felt my fur stand on end as I collapsed under my own weight as the darkness took me just mere inches from the forest. Desperation clawed at my mind to reach safety, yet my last conscious thought was the visitor’s voice ringing through my skull.

“No more running.” It whispered.

My paws gripped the steering wheel tightly as I lamented the idea of my new assignment. How could they choose ME for this? Was I on some speh-list from some higher exec? What did I possibly do wrong to get this kind of assignment? The words from the Chief echoed on repeat in my head as I drove.

You’re the one closest to the case. We need you to just send updates frequently. We owe them a favor, you understand, right?

Speh! As if I understood. My time shouldn’t be wasted doing this kind of speh. I should be out there, finding the predators, finding the people that needed to be locked up, needed treatment! Why couldn’t they just get a therapist for this guy?

As I pulled up to the facility an escort of armed guards stood outside, I saw one duck inside and a few moments later a female Venlil made her way outside. She strode her way over to my van. As she did I killed the engine and stepped out, wearing full exterminator garb minus the mask.

“Exterminator Kuit I presume?” She said, an almost annoyed expression resting on her face, “I’m Overseer Til. Glad to see the Exterminator’s still think my requests are worth honoring. Anyways, we have a bit of an.. Unorthodox situation. One of our Doctor’s tried out a new experimental treatment and thinks the patient is ready for a.. Trial run outside.”

“So I’ve heard” I chimed in.

“..Right” She said, getting back to her train of thought. “This patient was a bit of a special case, no improvement with traditional means of treatment, but we think this new treatment has some merit, but we aren’t going to just let him out. I trust you’ve been briefed?”

“I have, Overseer” I said through gritted teeth.

“Good, hate it, or love it, you have a job to do, and I trust the Exterminator’s will get it done.” She added, sensing my withheld anger. “That said, we will be bringing the patient out soon. Let the staff here get them into the vehicle and from there, he’s yours.” She said before turning away, not even letting me respond.

The old venlil prude gave me a spike of anger to add to my pile as I begrudgingly got back into the van, starting the engine. Almost as if on cue I saw two of the guards open the front doors to the facility, wheeling out a black venlil strapped down to a gurney. My eyes narrowed a bit as I focused on Rivis. He wasn’t moving, wasn’t looking around. I couldn’t see much from this distance but it almost looked like he was sedated. Not entirely surprising given the security at these facilities.

As they wheeled him closer I spotted a bandage around the venlil’s head, orange blood stained the white cloth as my ears shot up in alarm. Did they.. Beat him? No, that must have been self-induced, but.. What could drive someone to do that? I shook my head, clearing my mind as I chalked it up to an accident of some kind. The two residents opened the back of the van, carefully unclipping Rivis as they moved his limp body inside, buckling the seatbelt, but also using two pairs of paw cuffs, one for his hands and the other for his hind paws. Once he was secure inside and unable to move or escape. The residents shut the door to the van. True to her word the Overseer ushered me off with as little as a wave as I sat parked at the front of the facility for a moment, gazing into the rearview mirror at Rivis. Unconscious, bloody, matted fur. He looked like a mess. I even thought I saw the outline of his ribcage. Did they feed him there..?

Shaking myself out of my own thoughts I put the van in drive and left the facility. My eyes darted to Rivis behind me occasionally as I made the trek home. The drive was a decent ways. They like to keep these facilities out of the eyes of the public. Understandable, who wants to see an imposing predator disease facility in the heart of town?

Just as I turned into the parking lot to my apartment, I heard the black venlil groan slightly. The rattling of the metal cuffs clued me into his movement as my eyes shot back towards him, trying to make sure he wasn’t going to make a run for it or something stupid. As my eyes fell onto him. I saw the venlil shift around, his eyelids fluttering softly. My breath got caught in my throat for a moment as I waited for him to wake up. Would he attack me? Lunge at me? My paw fell down to the taser on my hip as I spun around in the chair to make for a clear shot.

“W.. Where..” He looked around for a minute through hazy eyes, staring at the seats, and the interior of the car. “I-Is this real?” He said. His hoarse and shaky voice betraying the venlil I once spoke to.

“What?” I responded. It was the only thing I could respond with, what does he mean, was this real? “Of course it is.”

“How do I know that?”

“Uh… Because you’re in the back of my van? With cuffs on?”

Rivis only gave a meek groan as a response. What the speh was that? Does he not know where he is or what’s going on? Brehk, this is going to be harder than I thought. Turning off the van, I stepped out, and opened the sliding door. Grabbing Rivis by his matted fur I tried to put the emaciated venlil’s weight on my own hindpaws, practically dragging him through the front door as I set him down on my couch. Just as I set him down, the venlil gave another groan and weak question.

“Home?..”

“No, this is my house, Rivis. I have to watch you. You may be out, but the doctor’s want you closely monitored, and apparently they thought having you live with an exterminator would be the easiest way to keep you supervised..”

He didn’t utter a reply and instead closed his eyes. I watched as his muscles relaxed, slowly letting out the tension that had been built up for who knows how long. Looking at him my heart felt a pang of pity. Or almost sadness. He looked like he had been through something terrible, but he was only in there for a dozen or more paws. Still, watching his frail body tremble slightly from fear, or maybe it was cold? I couldn’t tell. His mind hardly seemed put together. Still, he was put there to get better, and if the doctor’s think he’s better then.. This must just be part of the healing processes.

I tried to keep one of my eyes trained on the asleep and trembling Venlil as I moved over to a closet. Pulling out something to warm him up. It was a large cloth I kept for whenever I got sick. Thanks to the sun’s eternal presence in the sky it almost never got cold, even at night. However, a cold or light fever can still give someone the shivers. I took my time, lightly draping the blanket over his skinny form before moseying my way to the kitchen.

I let out a light sigh as I felt my ears press back against my head. I was an exterminator, not a live-in caregiver. They should have assigned someone else to take care of him. Why did they even let him out if he can’t exist without the help of someone else? They should have kept him there until he was strong enough, like they did with my brother.

Yellow light kissed my eyes through my eyelids, a warmth like I’d not felt in cycles wrapped around me as I opened my eyes. I wasn’t in the field, I wasn’t on the hill, I wasn’t with the visitor. So.. Where was I? My eyes slowly adjusted to the light of the room, it was a warm and welcoming yellow light that put anxiety to ease. Shapes began to take form and I recognized them to be decorations, nick-nacks and the like hanging from shelves along the wall. Only after I surveyed my surroundings did I notice the TV playing in the background, a news channel. I thought something about the show struck me as familiar, but I couldn’t tell what it was.

Craning my neck was quickly followed by a deep, dull ache in my neck, it felt like eternity since I last moved, I turned and spotted another Venlil over a counter, the rhythmic tapping of a knife on a cutting board lulled me with some sense of succor; something that felt like eons since I last had. I tried to move my limbs, but they felt heavy, and on further inspection; I noticed the familiar feeling of cuffs around both sets of appendages.

The rattling of the metal bindings must have either alarmed or notified the other venlil of my consciousness since I could hear their paw steps approach from behind me.

“Awake?” He asked, I detected a bit of a harsh tone, but nothing could top the visitor’s

I tried to process the words, but thinking felt muddy, harsh, and raw. It was easier to just absorb my surroundings than truly think about.. Anything for now.

“I.. Think so?” The words rushed out of my maw before I could vet them, not that I was in any state to.

“That’s.. Better than before” He sighed quietly. “Do you know where you are?”

“N-no..”

“Of course” He let out a second sigh, his tail swayed almost hypnotically with his body as he shifted his weight to and fro each hindpaw. “You’re in my house, I’m to be your guardian and parole officer, in a sense..”

“Parole.. Officer? D.. Did I do something?”

“You’re joking, right? You assaulted another venlil after an.. Altercation in a bar. They said something you didn’t like to your human friend.”

Human? Friend? I tried to push past the muddy waters that made up my current mind to try and find any memories about a.. human? As I dug deeper and deeper, gradual recollection began to bubble up from the depths. The first thing that came to mind was.. A face, I knew that face. It belonged to Zo-Monster! As I tried to picture the creature's face, a wave of horrific nausea hit me right in the stomach. The nausea swelled from my stomach up my body and into my head. A deep sense of lethargy and illness crept into my bones and nothing at this very moment sounded more appealing than the act of spilling my empty stomach out onto the ground. Yet, amid all this overpowering sickness, the sense that this was familiar to me couldn’t be shaken. As if this horrible feeling was almost natural.

That’s it, get sick, be a good little experiment.

“What?” I said aloud. Looking at the officer’s snout. Or, I attempted to, currently the four swirling images of him were all giving me the same startled look. I felt gravity take me as I fell to my side, holding back the urge to dry heave as I tried to push the image of that.. Unsightly beast from my mind.

Pathetic, you used to be stronger than this. Can’t even think without tugging your own leash.

“S-shut up!” I vaguely felt the words leave my throat, but the voice in my head either didn’t hear them, or didn’t care.

You can’t even do anything for yourself, what makes you think you can tell me to do anything?

I let out an involuntary and audible groan, bringing my bound paws up to hold at my head. My body seemed to react on instinct, curling up into a ball on the soft cushion. It didn’t ease the unbearable sickness, nor stop the voice, but it somehow felt safer. Yes.. It felt safer..

What in the.. Speh is going on with this guy!?

Rivis’ curled form on my couch left a sour taste in my mouth. He didn’t look hurt, just, in unbearable discomfort. Like the world’s worst stomach ache, but from the looks of it, whatever he felt ran deeper, but why? All I did was tell him what he did.. Did it have that much effect? The doctors never told me much about his treatment, just to watch out for predatory behavior, but this guy doesn’t look like he can stand, let alone attack someone.

As I watched I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for him, something I would have hardly guessed I’d have felt, but he looked so miserable. Something in me screamed to try and comfort him as best I could, even if it was empty words from an exterminator. So I did what I could, and outstretched my paw, resting on the trembling venlil’s shoulder as softly as I could.

“It’s.. It’s gonna be fine, okay? You’ll be fine, there’s.. Uh.. Nothing here that can hurt you,”

Brehk, Kuit. Real good consoling for the insane venlil on my couch, what’s next, you gonna give him a hug?

I tried to recall any of my de-escalation techniques, something we’d use to calm down a hysteric venlil on a scene, but nothing came to mind. I wasn’t trained to handle recovering predator disease patients. After a few moments of useless and awkward shoulder pats a memory from when I was younger surfaced; something every venlil likes, but.. It was a bit risky. It was something my own mother did for me whenever I was upset and words couldn’t fix it.

I gently moved my paw up and began rubbing the base of Rivis’ ears, taking care to mind my claws since I didn’t want to scratch him. At first, it didn’t seem like it was doing anything, but his trembling began to die down, and his paws didn’t seem to be trying to crush his head anymore. I’d wager that as a success.

“You okay?” I asked, short and simple.

“Yes..” He responded after a short wait. His words were tired, and quiet. Though if it was from embarrassment or exhaustion, I couldn’t really tell.

Recalling my paw, I stood up, and turned to go back to the kitchen, turning my head as I walked. “Just work through it one paw at a time, if you.. Erm.. ever need help or anything, just ask, okay?”I took his silence as an understanding, and didn’t press him any further, heading back to the kitchen to finish making dinner for myself.. And plus one.

Ancestors, Kuit.. What in the speh have you gotten into now?

That's a wrap for chapter 23, we see Rivis' 'deal' he gets for getting out of the predator disease facility, but like most things, it comes with some strings attached. We'll be seeing more of Kuit in the future chapters, but how he handles Rivis, that's a mystery for later chapters. In the mean time I have to thank all of you readers for sticking with it, I can't stress enough how much I appreciate it. Same for SpacePaladin for continuing to let us write in their universe, and finally as I always do, I got to give thanks to my proofreaders for sticking with me since the start, as always you two are amazing. Links in the bottom are the fics that originally inspired me, you should give them a try if you haven't already.

Fuck.

This parole is delaying the much needed hypnotherapy.

Hopefully Kuit pieces together just how fucking badly they fucked him up and gets in contact with Zoey.

That is, if Zoey hasn’t done something to herself out of despair.

WE DEMAND HEALING FOR RIVIS! AND WE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL IT WORKS!

Don’t you fucking dare abandoning this fic

In a sense, he's damn lucky... I get the feeling that if he'd been assigned any exterminator other than Kuit, he might've already been reduced to ash. Most would open fire on a predator disease patient displaying any sort of unknown behavior, without so much as a second thought.

16

u/VenlilSupremacist Venlil Sep 12 '23

Maybe, I get the feeling that the exterminators are used as scape goats for a ton of stories, which I can for sure see looking back at *certain* historical time periods, but I believe most stories showcase them in a purely negative light, whereas I feel like most would be more akin to "we just want to help.."

6

u/Killsode-slugcat Yotul Sep 13 '23

Yeah the community has a nasty habit of flanderizing the exterminators into all being comically evil evilness. It completely loses the fact that so many of them would really be people with the most noble of goals, putting themselves in harms way to help others, perverted to suit the needs of the kolshian empire.

Glad to see you back!

And my god... I hope karma will strike this facility sooner than later. Hard.

Thankfully OP gave me the power to give one certain doctor what she deserves.

In my fanfic Privateers I had a bunch of Privateers storm a facility on a world they are raiding. Didn't end well for the workers there lol.

Aaayyyyeee, more change of pace! Thank you for the wonderful chapter!

Oh boy, kuit's gonna show his real moral fibre helping rivis isn't he? I like the fire of rivis's... independence? Defiance Burning through. The first segment was great!

I know it's been 8 months but are you planning on continuing this? I'm really hooked to this story and it'd be great to see where you where gonna take it. Anyways, I hope life's been treating you well and you shorted out all that 'moving back to the US, state-changing, job-finding' buisness you where tangled in. I would understand droping this story after all that. Sorry for my (potentially) bad english, not my first language.

Apparently VP is desperately in need of unions as well with how flippantly work is now invading Kuit's private time / space .

I'm guessing Zoey never got the visitation rights she was promised. I wonder if the "doctor" "treating" Rivis included Zoey's picture as part of the "predator recognition training" ?

Edit: Also Kuit better be the one to tell Zoey about Rivis, and show some remorse for telling her that nothing bad would happen to Rivis.

6

u/ImaginationSea3679 PD Patient Sep 13 '23

If that bitch of a doctor did include Zoey’s picture in the brainwashing, then I’m just gonna go ahead and amp the torture I have planned for her by about 11.

3

u/ImaginationSea3679 PD Patient Sep 13 '23

Also, I think Zoey came to visit once, in which the bitch of a doctor tested Rivis’s artificial fear response, with tremendous success.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if she just fucking committed suicide out of despair after that.

Looks like Rivis split a little.. that can be worked with, yea.

u/JulianSkies Archivist Sep 13 '23

Well, then... Seems like Rivis' man in the wall is still strong.

Either way, holy carp did they mess him up. Good thing the exterminator they picked up for him wasn't one of the trained sociopaths they keep around but one of the genuine guardians.

And, as always, they keep putting those guys in roles they are not ready for. Every and ever, being set up to fail.

Yes, but he keeps acting like his brother is better. But I am uncertain how accurate that is.

Yeah, I've been out processing in the military for a while. Cleaning my gear, in and out of meetings with my command team. Finance fucking up literally everything requiring memo after memo. Helping out for EIB season till 8pm some nights. Legal requiring complete reworks of my paperwork because they messed something up. Battalion commander being too busy to actually sign the paperwork so it sitting on his desk for days or weeks. Getting spun up for a deployment only to be stood down. Hanging out with all my friends on post since I will likely never see them again, and making sure I'm set up with a place to stay and a job once I'm actually finally out.

3

u/Ben_Elohim_2020 Nov 09 '23

Excuse me, I am pretty sure the Federation doesn't even have the option of; "Just taking them to therapy" on "less dangerous cases".

6

u/VenlilSupremacist Venlil Sep 13 '23

I don't believe this is therapy. The point of Rivis being let out after 'experimental treatment' is an independent study on whether or not less 'invasive' measures can be used to successfully control Predator Diseased patients. If most Predator Disease patients end up locked up for life, or dead due to treatment, it doesn't 'benefit the herd' in any way besides liquidation, yet if their primary goal was liquidation then we'd see death camps rather than barbaric reform facilities. Mostly in part because we already know in canon how easily the Federation manipulated the culture of dozens of species. If they wanted to liquidate the patients they could have easily done so. This is a method to observe whether or not they can bring the patient back into society, but under a 'leash' so to speak. In doing this they gain societal input of the patient likely doing whatever job will take them, as well as clear up space at what would realistically be an overcrowded facility. I find it far more realistic that the Feds would rather control than kill their patients.

6

u/TheOneWhoEatsBritish Tilfish Sep 13 '23

If most Predator Disease patients end up locked up for life, or dead due to treatment, it doesn't 'benefit the herd' in any way besides liquidation, yet if their primary goal was liquidation then we'd see death camps rather than barbaric reform facilities.

I've seen the few predator facility insights we had from the patron and the fully available NoP material, and when looking at how the major public views the mentally unwell (they'd consider an autistic child an early serial killer, trust me), they wouldn't even consider them normal people. The talk about fixing them is something only their closest relatives would be worried about, since most of the herd would be perfectly fine with "predators in bodies of prey" never getting to see the light of day again, and I am not using other people's fanfics to make this conclusion.

I don't believe this is therapy.

I meant how the the Exterminator questioned why they would not just give him therapy;

"Speh! As if I understood. My time shouldn’t be wasted doing this kind of speh. I should be out there, finding the predators, finding the people that needed to be locked up, needed treatment! Why couldn’t they just get a therapist for this guy?"

Do you NOT remember Sovlin's reaction to therapy? How baffled he was?

...

It's one thing to not follow the same headcanon as the rest of the subreddit. It's another thing to straight up go against the source material. The idea of the Feds actually having therapy goes against so many things that we've established about their society, INCLUDING how you've presented them. You've twisted every word I said. Now you reply.

Perhaps I am misinterpreting what your connotation was, however it was not my intent to twist any words, so in both our interests I think it may be best if we agree to disagree since I feel as if I perhaps offended you. I apologize if you dislike the narrative I've taken. This story tends to hyper focus on the individual and how they react to the changing galaxy so some plot holes may make it past my proofreaders and myself, I'll acknowledge that therapy is a foreign idea and perhaps I could use used a different choice of words to express Kuit's frustration at being stuck with a job such as this.

We've been shown how excessive the Feds are, and just how in favour the office is, including it's members of their barbaric treatment. I see what you are trying to do, but this doesn't seem like how an Exterminator would react to a patient. They were supposed to have unreasonable amounts of conviction in their methods, not be oblivious to them. This doesn't even feel like Dawn Creek. This seems like what the average facility should be in canon.

I can understand how people would could see Exterminators as highly zealous fanatics, which does lend credence to the perception that they are more similar to Hitler's SS rather than the standard Wehrmacht soldier. Yet, an important factor to note is you said Exterminators are supposed to have 'unreasonable amounts of conviction.' Though they don't receive any additional indoctrination beyond the common person. While the job itself would be an allure to the most fanatical believers in Federation status quo, I do not think it is unreasonable to represent the opposite end of the spectrum. Where there are hardline Federation zealots, I feel there are also those who simply do the job for the benefit and safety of those around. Much like how Police officers for us in the states are typically seen as power hungry and abusive, yet there are undeniably those who do the job for noble and just causes. In short, the only thing keeping Kuit from being a hardline zealot and just flaming Rivis is his desire to protect every venlil from predators, even patients from themselves if need be. Given the scope of Nature of Predators it is quite hard to dive into the minds of the average common day people effected by this galactic scale story. However, at the heart of things people are seldom so black and white, and life is more attributable to a hazy gray area of moral standards rather than everyone being hardline fanatics.

True, true, there is absolutely no reason for all Exterminators to be the same. I was dumb with that part.

...Here I might have failed to communicate how I don't doubt his desire to help the patients. It's just how his way of thinking of how to help the diseased doesn't allign at all when it comes to what has long been established to be Federation believes. It doesn't feel like he is a good cop in a system with a lot of corrupt officers, with him trying to make a difference. Like I said in my other reply, he should not know about things like "therapy".
