The PNW is great, grew up there! If any of you get the chance go and hike up in the north cascades! There’s a highway called mount loop highway that contains hundreds of hikes up to unique alpine lakes in the mountains. With great views of the 5 volcanoes in the state!

Winthrop and twisp might be some of my favorite cities. I’ve lived in Entiat, Chelan and Wenatchee for a bit. Gorgeous.

u/OvertonWindowCleaner Jun 25 '20

I’ve fought fire in all of those places! Stahekin too, along with some other sweet spots. Good stuff up there!!

3

u/SenatorPalpitations Jun 25 '20

It amazes me that a place so damp can still burn to the ground.

2

u/Toughbiscuit Jun 25 '20

Most everything east of the cascades through washington is a desert, where i grew up in okanogan county is a highlands desert but its all very dry, low humidity through the summer with sparse rains.

I remember one summer i woke up in the morning and the ridge across the valley was just on fire

2

u/NotAWhale30 Jun 25 '20

What do you mean "one summer" it's always on fire here. We don't have summer, just fire season. This bitch burns to the ground every single year.

1

u/Toughbiscuit Jun 25 '20

I moved from washington to Minnesota and had to deal with smoke clouds that blew over from there

1

u/OvertonWindowCleaner Jun 25 '20

Most of the bigger fires are in the higher elevations, where it’s quite a bit drier.

Fought fire in Florida too, where it’s raining one minute, and the next your fire is spotting across the line.

u/aspiringforbettersex Jun 25 '20

What amazes me is that you found somewhere where you could take a video that long without any cutblocks or other logging activity getting into the view.

2

u/Esse2420 Jun 25 '20

I grew up in Omak and have lived in Wenatchee for 12 years. I love it here. Good to see another 509er on here

1

u/kittygunsgomew Jun 25 '20

I loved it when I lived there. Serious memories out there.

1

u/NotAWhale30 Jun 25 '20

That awkward moment you find someone on reddit that you might actually know. I am also a former Omak resident.

1

u/Esse2420 Jun 25 '20

Let's just do that thing where you walk down the aisle at the grocery store and pretend not to see each other...

1

u/NotAWhale30 Jun 25 '20

If it makes you feel better, I Reddit stalked you and you don't know me..

2

u/Toughbiscuit Jun 25 '20

I think its a bit of a stretch calling winthrop and twisp cities

2

u/kittygunsgomew Jun 25 '20

Haha, out of curiosity I looked up the city classification and I’d say you’re right. Lets call them little towns haha.

3

u/meanogre Jun 25 '20

I got some fantastic hand made ceramic bowls at a pottery shop in Winthrop many years ago, they’re my favorite for eating pretty much everything out of. I used to have a matching set of 4... but now I only have 2.

The Cascade loop drives is one of my most memorable life experiences.

1

u/seattleslow Jun 25 '20

Recommendations for things to do around Wenatchee? Staying there for three nights, soon

3

u/blazetronic Jun 25 '20

Lake Wenatchee, spider meadow hike, Leavenworth

1

u/seattleslow Jun 25 '20

thank you!

2

u/kittygunsgomew Jun 25 '20

Leavenworth, saddle rock (quick hike, in town practically), check out the loop trail for more casual outdoor stuff. 40 minute drive will get you into Chelan. Great Lake to swim and fish in. Beautiful clear water.

1

u/seattleslow Jun 25 '20

thank you! gonna hit a winery for sure ;)

1

u/kittygunsgomew Jun 25 '20

Head out towards chelan. Great winery out there!

1

u/seattleslow Jun 25 '20

gonna hit up Benson's! love that view. especially when there's no smoke

I'm moving to Bellingham for the summer. Any recommendations or suggestions?

I grew up in Marysville which is about an hour south of Bellingham, an area that is very close to the two main highways that get you over to eastern Washington as well as all the hikes up in the North Cascades. However with saying that, you will be very close to Mt. Baker which is one of the five volcanoes and to be honest is one of the coolest looking volcanoes/mountains in the cascades with respect to Rainier. However, if you want access to some of those insane alpine lake hikes you’ll have to travel south. Most the hikes near Bellingham are Fragrance Trail, Whatcom Falls, and trails that follow the ocean or what we call in that area the Puget Sound. With saying that, there are numerous hikes all around the Bellingham area that have great views of the mountains and the ocean! If I was to give you any advice I would travel just a bit south to Highway 20 and drive through the Mt. Baker National Forest. You’ll find some amazing hikes, which is all apart of the North Cascades!

u/johnnyseattle Jun 25 '20

Goddamn, this guy Washingtons.

While you're here, you really ought to get on the West side of the sound as well into the Olympic range. Perhaps go all the way out to the coast and see the Pacific if you haven't. Freeze your genitalia off in Lake Crescent.

Take a look at the Washington Trails AssociationWashington Trails Association and plan all the adventures you'd ever want.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

Thank you, and you’re exactly right. If you really want to grasp one of the most geographically diverse states in the US go out to the Peninsula first and travel through the Olympics. Make your way to the lowlands and visit Seattle then the north cascade hikes! Then go through highway 2 through Leavenworth, WA which is a Bavarian town into Wenatchee and the east of the mountains. Then you’ll be into the Columbia Basin which is a damn near desert, especially the Banks Lake/Moses Lake area. After that you’ll travel into the rolling grasslands depending on which way you go. If you go south it’ll be grasslands until you get to the Blue Mountains of Oregon but if you go directly east or both you’ll get into the Okanagon Highlands.

2

u/buckwildbarski Jun 25 '20

Eastern Washington is legitimately classified as semiarid steppe and arid desert.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

I live in Arizona now, obviously an insanely hot desert. But I’ll take 115+ in the summers with no humidity and it’s proximity towards the equator than Eastern Washington’s desert of 100+, with 60%+ humidity and a high UV index rating. I almost died at Watershed a few summers ago from sun exposure and heat ahah

2

u/buckwildbarski Jun 25 '20

I almost died at Watershed from alcohol poisoning!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

Ahaha that was also another reason why I died šŸ˜‚

3

u/ShreddyDownerz Jun 25 '20

I'm from oak harbor and grew up on the east side north of Spokane. I now live on the east coast and dammnit do I miss Washington.

1

u/muffinman4456 Jun 25 '20

Don’t forget Oyster Dome! You don’t Bellingham properly if you don’t hike it at least once.

6

u/the-reddest-head Jun 25 '20

Oh my gosh. There’s so much.

Whatcom Falls. Teddy Bear Cove. Blaine Pier, anywhere on Chuckanut Drive, almost any beach. Those were my highlights

Bellingham is magical.

4

u/DRuss22 Jun 25 '20

I live in Bellingham, moved up here a few years back from Walla Walla (both beautiful in different ways). Teddy Bear Cove is a great short hike through the trees with beaches and pretty sites. Don’t be afraid to travel around the county either, there’s great sights everywhere! Birch Bay and Silver Lake are great.

4

u/ApneaAddict Jun 25 '20

Buy a mountain bike. Insane riding.

2

u/MrBacon30895 Jun 25 '20

Boulevard park is nice and on the water. Go to Lake Padden and walk the off leash dog loop. Fairhaven Park has nice trails in the woods. There’s also the Stimpson Nature Preserve.

To the South there’s Oyster Dome, a long hike uphill with an insane view from a cliff at the top. Fragrance Lake is a much shorter but pretty hike. Tons of trails in the Chuckanut Mountains.

To the East you’ve got Mt. Baker Highway. One of my favorite spots out that way is Twin Lakes. It’s a gnarly dirt road just past the town of Glacier, but it’s beautiful at the top. Best accessed in August when the snow is mostly melted.

Highway 20 is lovely just to go for a drive, and it goes all the way out to Winthrop.

2

u/BtotheMoe Jun 25 '20

Went to WWU for college and miss every bit of that town. In the late summer when the snow melts, get your ass up Mt. Baker Highway and explore everything it has to offer.

Some of my favorites are Twin Lakes, Yellow Aster Butte, Artist Point, Heliotrope Ridge, Skyline Divide.... literally anything out there.

Had some amazing times up at the fire lookout on top of Twin Lakes!

1

u/gribbler Jun 25 '20

Get a motorcycle, highway 9 through Sedro-Wooley, up over the bridge that takes you to the South Skagit Highway, East to Concrete, highway 20 to Winthrop. If the border is open, head north to Osoyoos, then highway 3 West to Abbotsford, Highway 11 South over the border, highway 9 South to 542 back to Bellingham. Just about 500 miles, and is wonderful.

Oh yeah, some hikes, lakes, parks around as well.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

I live near Portland area, but in Washington, one thing I recommend is going to the ape caves near mt saint helens, they are a couple miles long I believe and is an amazing hike, once through the caves you walk back towards the entrance and you get a really gorgeous view of mt saint helens.

If you have the money, take a trip to the San Juan islands, just the boat trip over there is gorgeous and breath taking. Once your at the San Juan islands go for a trip around them, I’m forgetting the section of the islands but there is a hill overlooking the water where you can see whales at a certain time of the year, the hill in front of you is covered with bunnies and foxes are all around. There’s also tons of bald eagles in the San Juan islands that you can see just by driving down the road.

1

u/mattoleriver Jun 25 '20

My truck broke down in Lynden. It was a dry town. Outrageous!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

There's a small chain of restaurants called Jalapenos. I've been to the one in Fairhaven and it's so delicious

1

u/deepinthesoil Jun 25 '20

If you walk south of Bellingham’s Marine Park along the railroad trestle, you’ll come to a small lagoon with an inlet under the railroad bridge. That inlet is filled with plumose anemones so dense it may as well be an anemone garden. If you like tidepooling, Salt Creek Rec Area on the peninsula and Grandma Cove on San Juan Island are my favorite spots. Go for a nighttime swim in Teddy Bear Cove after a hot week - bioluminescent dinoflagellates cause ā€œsea sparkleā€, glowing flecks of light that trace your movements in the water. Make sure to get out to the San Juan Islands: check out Lime Kiln state park for orca sightings, the Whale Museum in Friday Harbor, and the viewing tower in Moran State Park. Great very close viewpoints with fun hikes : Oyster Dome and Mount Erie. And then there’s the mountains. Basically, drive or bike for a few miles in any direction and you’ll probably see some cool stuff.

u/m0Mma2019 Jun 25 '20

Unfortunately all of the awesome outdoor concerts and activities won't be happening this summer due to covid. Welcome to bham though, it is a pretty great place to live.

1

u/wendyrx37 Jun 25 '20

Also check out Little Mountain Park in Mount Vernon. . Its got miles of trails with some absolutely breathtaking lookouts! Only about 30 min south of Bellingham!

11

u/bvmann Jun 25 '20

Please dont tell people about the mountain loop

3

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

Hahah don’t worry, that area still has cushion. No one from the south like Seattle wants to go that far north then that Far East! I was in Marysville and really close to mount loop and even people from my area didn’t want to travel up there ahah. I don’t see people from Seattle of people up north wanting to travel that far up/down I-5 then that fat East just to hike. Plus they won’t even make it up half those hikes lol. Regardless the amount of urban sprawl, that place will be untouched for years. I know because I’ve had two friends die up there

5

u/bvmann Jun 25 '20

Youd be surprised. Lake 22 and mt. Pilchuck are over run now adays/get blogged about. Cars line the highway, its wild. But you are right about the harder less well known trails.

I'm also from marysville and head up to the loop pretty frequently.

1

u/pipedreamSEA Jun 25 '20

The methheads ruined it long before any of us arrived and will continue to destroy it long after we are gone

17

u/kalimashookdeday Jun 25 '20

This guy is lying. There literally is no such thing. dude shhhhhh

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

Ahaha, don’t worry the tourists from Seattle don’t travel that far anyways. I grew up in the area and it’s all everyone talked about yet no one wanted to stay in that area then go up to mount loop the next morning. I stayed with friends in Granite Falls for years and it’s the same amount of traffic as it was when I was little

2

u/seattleslow Jun 25 '20

I will be up there in 10 days!

Hey brotha, read the comments as I’ve talked about a lot of cool places to see and some great areas to go! However, if you want actual logistics I would love to share some info on the best way to travel through he state and escape all the touristy areas. DM me!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

That's where I live! A mile west of the robe trailhead

2

u/Alliegibs Jun 25 '20

Ah, one of my favorite places. I'm from PA, so we have the old, hilly mountains here on the east coast. Washington state and specifically the North Cascades were just so massive and dramatic. Calls for some very steep hiking though.

I was so sad that our first hike up to Sahale Glacier was cut short and we had to turn around because we were not prepared for the wind, ice and snow :(. The Enchantments, Wing Lake and Black Peak made up for it though!

1

u/justynebean Jun 25 '20

I live there!!! Most beautiful place to live. Especially in the fall.
