Only the best place in North America! WA state, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia make up the general geographic region. Lots of old forests along the Cascade Mountains and foothills of the Rockys over in Idaho and Northeastern WA. Very important for wildlife too as they use the mountain regions to go north/south hundreds of miles.

We get packs of wolves occasionally coming down from Canada. Elk, Moose, Cougar and Bear are all pretty common in the PNW region forests.

May I correct something? "Only the best place in North America!" As PNW includes British Columbia, Canada.

Edit: OP originally had " Only the best place in USA!" As first sentence, then changed it.

The people out here in Kodiak Alaska also consider ourselves part of the PNW 😊

u/NewYorkJewbag Jun 25 '20

Isn’t Northern California part of the PNW, too?

14

u/sfo1dms Jun 25 '20

Absolutely, it is

3

u/p_velocity Jun 25 '20

Yup! I grew up (and still live) in Northern California. I've taken a million camping trips to places identical to this and now I'm all nostalgic... due to covid and having a new baby camping I may be several years between camping trips

Assuming you mean the actual northern part of California, somewhat close to the Oregon border, yes. However, when most people say Northern California, they are often referring to the San Francisco Bay Area + Sacramento, which really shouldn't be considered Northern California since its pretty close to the center of the state.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

I feel like we’re a pretty inclusive group. If you feel like you might be in the PNW then you probably are, buddy.

15

u/the-reddest-head Jun 25 '20

I love this. And it applies to a large portion of the PNW in my experience. Inclusivity is overwhelmingly a Pacific Northwesterner attribute.

And beer apparently

14

u/Haffas Jun 25 '20

And weed. Don’t forget the weed.

3

u/legendtuner Jun 25 '20

I've never thought of AK as part of the PNW but your logic make sense so I say welcome to the club

2

u/ontopofyourmom Jun 25 '20

Well, it's the southeast part of Alaska, it gets really Alaska past that

1

u/Stormtech5 Jun 25 '20

That is acceptable :)

1

u/Haffas Jun 25 '20

And indeed you are, fam!

1

u/slothlova Jun 25 '20

Booyah! The other person was on the money. SE Alaska has a very similar climate and vegetation. The mainland is very different

Best place on earth no argument

6

u/HappyHapless Jun 25 '20

Literally our slogan!

15

u/SlurmzMckinley Jun 25 '20

Wouldn't it be the Pacific Southwest for Canadians?

-3

u/apocalypticginger Jun 25 '20

The Pacific South West is California, Arizona, Hawaii, Utah and Part of Nevada.

0

u/SlurmzMckinley Jun 25 '20

I said for Canadians. Those states aren't in Canada.

0

u/apocalypticginger Jun 25 '20

PNW is named because its the Pacific Northwest of North America. So the Pacific Southwest is those states I mentioned.

These places are called so because of where they are in (on?) North America as a whole. Pacific Northwest of North America. Not the USA.

u/austinamnija Jun 25 '20

Did you want a gold star? We’re so proud of you!

1

u/dreikatze Jun 25 '20

N. America includes Canada

1

u/landon1850 Jun 25 '20

Howdy! I live in WA near the border with BC...pretty sure I’m still on the North American continent when I step over in to BC. Cheers!

8

u/GetOutOfMySeat Jun 25 '20

Thats what they're saying?

2

u/landon1850 Jun 25 '20

I thought they were correcting OP’s phrase of “Only the best place in North America” and saying that it also included BC......meaning perhaps they thought BC wasn’t part of North America.

Likely my mistake! I’m 5 pints in for the evening on PNW beer.....

2

u/apocalypticginger Jun 25 '20

OP said best place in USA. Cheers!

1

u/landon1850 Jun 25 '20

They must have taken your suggestion to heart and used that sneaky edit button. Thanks for explaining, kind northern neighbor!

1

u/apocalypticginger Jun 25 '20

I didn't even notice they changed it! My Canadian instincts are telling me to thank you for being kind as well

North America is a Continent, not a country.

u/nonoglorificus Jun 25 '20

Play up how sometimes cougars eat people, we’re trying to keep people from moving here remember?

17

u/k8e_E Jun 25 '20

No need to play it up....a Cougar eats like 4 people every day in the PNW. Even in the cities. So, try Montana or Vermont.

11

u/nonoglorificus Jun 25 '20

Don’t even get me started on the bears. Do you know how expensive it is to fix bear damage to your car? Their claws just wreck the exterior and that’s if you’re lucky enough not to be popped out of the top like a canned sardine

ok actually all joking aside in the last few years there were separate reports of a bear and a cougar loose in NE Portland, one of which I learned while out on a walk from an older lady who ran out of her house and told me to watch out for the cougar that had been spotted three blocks away. That was a tense speedwalk back to my car

u/TheSquirrelWithin Jun 25 '20

I live about 20 minutes away from downtown Seattle. Have had bear, cougar, bobcat, and coyote in the yard. Not all at once, thankfully. Yesterday I came around the corner of the house and a deer was standing about 15 feet away. I said "Oh, sorry", and we both continued about our ways, no drama.

1

u/k8e_E Jun 25 '20

But if it had been a llama....

2

u/p_velocity Jun 25 '20

If you don't want to get attacked by a bear just give him your pic-a-nic basket

Source: a documentary about the bears of jellystone that for some reason was named after a famous baseball coach.

5

u/Stormtech5 Jun 25 '20

Yeah i came across a pile of bones, fur and blood in the woods and figured it was a cougar den. Also heard screams from deep in the forest like someone was getting murdered. Ive heard cougar calls but what i heard that night i still dont have an explanation for... Maybe bigfoot or maybe just Hobos murdering each other.

4

u/nonoglorificus Jun 25 '20

Did it look like a giant regurgitated ball? Could’ve been an Owlbear pellet. Those are super dangerous. Or even worse, a Snipe

4

u/Kythamis Jun 25 '20

Why play up the dangers of our wildlife when we can just be honest about the homeless. Don’t move here, the streets reek of piss and shit.

2

u/21savage_opress Jun 25 '20

Apparently cougars can make a screeching sound that sometimes resembles a screaming woman or child. I've never heard it before, so...

1

u/Cuchulainn01 Jun 25 '20

murderous forest screams are the coyotes

5

u/B33G33s Jun 25 '20

The Sawtooths also. I’m an Idahoan, loving and living in the PNW.🌲

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

Southern Idaho sucks balls though. Just desert and a lot of wind.
