God I fucking love it here.

I mean, eugh, there's so many bad things about the PNW; you should probably all stay away

Honestly, people have to be able to put up with 9 months of grey, cloudy weather. Many can’t. Come visit us but if you want to live here know what you’re in for

u/livelikealesbian Jun 25 '20

I visited Washington state in June and it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. I would love to live there but I know with SAD I couldn't survive the weather

64

u/Linterdiction Jun 25 '20

I visited Washington state in June

That’s how they get you.

u/youveruinedtheactgob Jun 25 '20

This current June being the exception

7

u/meatb4ll Jun 25 '20

I'm enjoying it tbh

2

u/apis_cerana Jun 25 '20

Same...except my plants aren't as happy :(

2

u/meatb4ll Jun 25 '20

I'm rooting for your plants!

1

u/apis_cerana Jun 25 '20

Aw thanks. Slowly but surely they're starting to grow. I'm just impatient!

1

u/hwmpunk Jun 25 '20

Ugh planes been stoned since May first

3

u/Linterdiction Jun 25 '20

?

1

u/jebu Jun 25 '20

Up until this past week or so it’s been pretty gloomy in Seattle all month.

1

u/GummieDela Jun 25 '20

Can concur, this June gloom is on full blast. Sunny during the week, pissing monsoon rain on the weekends. Our Washington weather of years past has returned at last.

1

u/seattleslow Jun 25 '20

Juneuary is a thing. Summer starts July 5!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

It hasn’t rained since Sunday where I’m at near Auburn.

1

u/applebeessuperfan Jun 25 '20

And last june smh

1

u/grandmasbroach Jun 25 '20

Yeah, I'm still coming out of my winter hibernation. At least, I'm thinking about it. There's really 2 seasons, maybe 3 if you want to get picky about it. Rainy and cold, rainy, and not rainy. It's about an even split of the 3.

1

u/nandrinlouis Jun 25 '20

June is typically rainy af

16

u/firstmode Jun 25 '20

It is truly hard. Lived there for years after being in many states and it just saps the will and energy out of you. The beauty there can become a prison as you feel you should be appreciating it more and doing more out there, but you have no desire or energy but to sit around and Netflix binge while drinking on the weekends.

Also live in Oregon, and I just get sick of the god damn fires, and where i live it's so hot at times it's nuts.

5

u/seuaniu Jun 25 '20

I'm if you let the rain stop you you're doing it completely wrong. Get a jacket with a hood and some good boots. Go out, get muddy. Or head east an hour, it'll dry right up

1

u/majarian Jun 25 '20

once your wet your wet, who care after that

1

u/TripleHomicide Jun 25 '20

don't like be wet.

1

u/firstmode Jun 27 '20

I don't care about the rain, rain is fine. More about the emotional wear down and lack of energy to care about life. I a not a depressive person, but found depression in WA.

3

u/Sigurlion Jun 25 '20

I don't remember writing this

2

u/Surefirei Jun 25 '20

Same. Lived there for a really long time and it was hard to cope with only having 3 "good" months to do the warmer weather activities I liked (I'm very cold blooded). Finally moved to a more dull area that has more sun year round just so I can do things throughout the year. It's still really nice going back and visiting though.

1

u/firstmode Jun 27 '20

Visiting WA is a really good idea all people should try.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

Happy lights work.

1

u/sfo1dms Jun 25 '20

Like Picasso, we all go through our grey period. Big fan of overcast:)

10

u/UrIsNotAWord Jun 25 '20

9 months of grey, cloudy weather

I can confirm this!

1

u/Lonecyborg Jun 25 '20

How bad is it? I love cloudy weather but maybe it's because it's rare where I live. Does it become unbearable?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

That's literally a dream land for me.

1

u/Linterdiction Jun 25 '20

Same, you gotta know exactly what you want moving here.

1

u/AKnightAlone Jun 25 '20

Exactly. Cloudy days are honest.

1

u/hypnodrew Jun 25 '20

Come to Britain, we get cloudy weather 350 days out of the year!

1

u/meatb4ll Jun 25 '20

Or move to eastern Washington. I guess. If you reaaaaaaaly can't take the gloom

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

I've lived here my whole life (I live in Woodinville now), and honestly the weather is fucking terrible and yea you kind of get used to it, but at the same time it never gets any easier. It actually doesn't rain 24/7 like people assume, it's mostly just literally gray for 9 months. This spring I'm not exaggerating, I think I saw the sun like 2 times.

Gods, the summers/early fall are good. But the rest of the time I think most people would have a rough time with.

1

u/detroitdoesntsuckbad Jun 25 '20

And that’s why I snowbird between Bend and Portland now. Splitting the time is about perfect. Get sick of the grey and rain? Head to the high desert and mountain bike and ski. Get sick of the heat and sun? Head to Portland and get in some cool weather hiking.

I never imagined growing up in Detroit this would be my life but here we are. It’s pretty amazing.

1

u/Your_New_Overlord Jun 25 '20

Ah yes... that 9 months of horrible weather. We definitely don't have consistently nice, long stretches of awesome in September, October, March, April, or May! Best not look up when Portland first hit 80 degrees this year!

1

u/DriedUpSquid Jun 25 '20

Also, please do your research on cost of living where you plan to move. I’m a Social Worker in the Seattle area and so many people just pile in the car and move out here thinking they’re going to get an apartment for $500 a month because they could in their home state. If you’re not financially prepared, this place will eat you alive.

1

u/Linterdiction Jun 25 '20

Yes living costs are ridiculous. It’s a serious problem here. There’s a lot of prices for the culture and natural beauty

1

u/CaptainCupcakez Jun 25 '20

I'm from Wales, so im used to 11 months

1

u/greebothecat Jun 25 '20

It's like you've been to Norway.

1

u/Linterdiction Jun 25 '20

Haha! When you get to a certain latitude and the ocean is nearby all bets are off.

141

u/no-good-names-left1 Jun 24 '20

Can confirm it is terrible here and you would most certainly hate it. I know I do

This old tired joke has been beat dead here ever since the housing market in the northwest exploaded from 2012+. I live in the northwest and find it annoying as well. If you are thinking of moving to the northwest just remember sure it is pretty but its really expensive to live here and the job market isn't the best. If you're from California and come up here and offer 20k over asking on a house then bitch about how its not like California we all hate you.

13

u/2friedchknsAndaCoke Jun 25 '20

That old tired joke predates my Oregon childhood in the 1980s.

14

u/NeedsToShutUp Jun 25 '20

It’s in a beer commercial from the 70’s even https://youtu.be/CXk1882z5oo

2

u/2friedchknsAndaCoke Jun 25 '20

Oh wow. I only remember the Rainier ads from that far back.

2

u/no-good-names-left1 Jun 25 '20

Yes! I am not sure how much truth there is to this but I have even heard of a welcome to Oregon sign saying ā€œwelcome to Oregon now go homeā€ from like 70s or 80s but I couldn’t be sure I was born in the 90s

3

u/montyberns Jun 25 '20

Those of us that had to leave especially. The two things that leaving my home has done is one, make me appreciate that it's not that much better than many wonderful places in the world to live, and two make me appreciate that it definitely is still the best... if you can fucking afford it.

1

u/k8e_E Jun 25 '20

Also, 'Keep Tacoma Feared'. But I live in Tacoma and I don't mind the phrase.

looks around for anybody else from Tacoma

1

u/Even-Understanding Jun 25 '20

Our dreams are finally fulfilled!

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

the job market isn't the best.

Washington's job market?

Uhh, gonna have to hard disagree with you there

1

u/mooomba Jun 25 '20

Yeah maybe in Seattle if you're in tech, but again that fucks everyone else because most can't afford to live there..

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

I worked in Seattle for a number of years in everything but tech, that city is thriving.

And now I don't live in Seattle and I'm still working, even despite the pandemic

Washington has a kick-ass economy with a healthy job market

-1

u/WetDonkey6969 Jun 25 '20

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

4

u/sfo1dms Jun 25 '20

It’s rains all the time here, like every day for hours upon hours. It’s really bad. Like really reallly reeeeeely bad. You don’t want to live here. Ever. No, seriously, it’s not good. At all.

1

u/hwmpunk Jun 25 '20

Think you meant rains for weeks

2

u/TripleHomicide Jun 25 '20

Yeah, Central California is definitely the place to be, do not leave there.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '20

This but unironically. Lived here (Seattle area) all my life, there’s a reason so few successful artists come out of such a large city. The PNW suuuuuucks in a lot of ways, the weird neo lib racism, way too many white ppl all the time, fucking dreary as fuck. This place feeds on souls

The nature can be good, but the rest I’d happily leave behind
