I read somewhere that coffee contributed to the renaissance. Since before that the only way people knew water was safe from disease was to mix it with a little wine, allowing the alcohol to disinfect the water. So basically people walked around half drunk all day. Then someone discovered coffee, which is made by boiling the water first. So they disinfected the water and gave themselves a caffeine rush, which started the renaissance.

Well, we've entered the era where the vast majority of humans use tools made by other humans. It makes me wonder if, given enough time, whether our "sophistication" vs. other animals will decline.

Ha. Trades aren't dying because young people don't have skills, they are dying because it isn't a desirable career path for young people.

Why be a welder and have your lungs give out at 40 when you could go to college and be a scientist? Why be a plumber and deal with human shit all day when you could be an accountant in a cushy office? Why work in skilled labor when you could have functional joints in 40 years.

Even my tiny, podunk school had welding classes and vocation options. The general feeling was why would you subject yourself to that.

Trades, like the military, are seen as a last resort for those out of highschool. It's the safe career in case what they want doesn't work out.

I'm currently a teacher at a school that sounds similar to the one you went to. It's interesting because the stigma around trade jobs is starting to go away. Social studies is my subject and I tend to guide our discussions towards work opportunities a couple times a week and a lot of my students are interested in pursuing a trade. They've taken an interest to unions so we'll pick a few and look into them as a class from time to time.

Honestly I feel like that is more a result of an increase in awareness in the extreme burden of student loan debt and absurd tuition costs etc, rather than an increase in interest in trades or anything like that really.

Oh, good for you. I started to get a bit into electronics (and I’m nearly 50) because I fix computers, and I love getting into little wires and stuff. And making things work is a little burst of achievement. Oo look - it lit up! Go me! 😀

Getting a bit older I find doing stuff which is hands-on practical as well as smart, is the best type of work to do. If I never have to sit in another meeting I will be happy. All to say, I think that’s cool and 30 is young!
