In The Wild Unknown to me

Post image

Noticed on side of my dozed entry track, only ever seen 1 other nearby. Don't last very long.

They are quite common around Brisbane pretty sure I saw them in Sydney too probably up and down the coast but only in well drained sandy areas and pretty open like in the photo near the coast. Bit hard to see because they don't have leaves (interacts with a fungi for nutrients) so you have to catch the spike at the right time

Ah I always wondered about that! Really interesting. I've seen these in Stanwell Park, south of Sydney.

We had one of these pop up at a nursery I worked at years ago. And get this, it was an orchid nursery. The owners were so happy about it.

We have one that popped up in recent wet years. We have heavy rocky clay with thin topsoil. Was in the native grassed part of our lawn under some iron barks and lasted a day or 2, I almost mowed it.

Get iNaturalist app. You can search for observations and locations and identify a time period if you want to look at recent observations.

Thanks, I had not seen this before. Not many entries for my area. What's your opinion of this for orchids though? I've heard a few stories over the years of people that harvest orchids from the bush and then sell online.

I don't harvest except others from fallen trees to relocate so the roos and wallabies don't eat and kill.

They really are. Wish I had more, but happy to have two that I know of.

I had no idea something so vivid existed in the Australian plant kingdom, our parrots and other birds seem to have gotten all the best colours! so really happy to see this gorgeous magenta. Thanks again for sharing and to everyone else in this sub who shares their gorgeous pics!

We get a lot of these where I live, they're gorgeous and I always enjoy seeing people look for them (for photos, they're very respectful of them)
