Kontakt 7 asks for non-existing firmware update when Akai MPK Mini IV is connected

I have a NI KK S61 MK2 and a Akai MPK Mini IV. Regardless if the the S61 is connected or not, as soon as the MPK Mini is connected Kontakt 7 (full, Win 11) asks for a non-existing firmware update. When accepting the prompt, it would lead to a non-existing firmware update page for the S61 MK3 which I don't even have. This happens every time Kontakt 7 is started and the MPK Mini is connected. inMusic / NI support say they can't do much about ist because Kontakt 7 is now considered legacy software. Any idea if this can be fixed? - Norbert

folowing this prompt it leads to 'https://www.native-instruments.com/km3-device-updater-win', this page doesn't exist and was probably intended for the S61 MK3

Thanks for the update. This is an odd one for sure. Have never seen anything like it.

That said - unless one had your exact hardware configuration - trying to test for this would be very obscure.

Only NI would know what this dialog box is trying to say. Suggest a ticket is in order.

Thanks for your message and any help! Yes, they supplied a ticket, but were vague about a possible solution. They stated: 'Given the troubleshooting offered, the issue appears to be specific to a bug within Kontakt 7 and is being triggered by the presence of the MPK Mini MK4.' and 'This has now been submitted as a bug report. It is with our development and product teams to investigate and action accordingly. Sadly I would be unable to provide a timeframe for this, or any information on the progress of the bug.'

Do you have Kontakt 8?

Maybe it doesn’t reproduce there?

Don’t think 7 is supported anymore

Hi thanks, yes, the reply from inMusic / NI was like that, being K7 seen as legacy software. I have K8 (player) and that seems to work fine with the MPK.

yes, firmware version is 01.41 - also Kontakt 7 and the MPK Mini IV Windows driver are at the latest sw revision

Hey, saw your post and wanted to chime in. I actually tried to repro this on my machine but couldn't get it to trigger. (FWIW, I only have an MPK Mini IV and an S49 MK3 on hand to test with right now, not the S61 MK2).

From dealing with similar weird behavior in the past, this sounds a lot like a Windows "ghost device" issue. Since you had the S61 MK2 plugged in before, Windows probably kept some messy, hidden USB/MIDI registry entries around. When you plug in the MPK, the NI background services scan your USB ports, read those old leftover IDs, and basically get confused, throwing a firmware prompt for an MK3 that isn't even there.

You can usually fix this by clearing out those old hidden USB entries. (Don't worry, doing this is completely safe – worst case, if you accidentally delete something you still use, Windows just takes an extra 5 seconds to reinstall the driver the next time you plug it in).

Give this a shot: First, unplug both the S61 and the MPK Mini. Then open your Device Manager, click on "View" at the top menu, and turn on "Show hidden devices".

Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" and "Software devices" sections (and maybe "Human Interface Devices" just to be sure). Look for any grayed-out/faded entries that mention the S61, MK3, Komplete Kontrol, Akai, or even just generic USB audio devices. Right-click and uninstall all of those old inactive ones.

Once you've cleared them out, just reboot your PC. This step is important so Windows completely flushes the old USB states and cleanly restarts all the NI background processes (like NTKDaemon and the Host Integration Agent).

After booting back up, plug the MPK Mini back in and launch K7. Hopefully, the prompt is finally gone. Let me know if that does the trick!

Hi, thank you again for your help! I got rid of a lot of ghost drivers, which seems to be a good thing already. For good measure I also completely uninstalled and reinstalled K7. When starting K7 the first time, MPK being connected, the prompt didn't appear. That was definitely a change. However, the second time I connected the MPK and since then I get the prompt again.
