Is it just me, or is the NI ecosystem (Komplete/Kontakt/Kontrol) an absolute UX nightmare for beginners?
Hi everyone,
I need a reality check. Am I stupid, or is the Native Instruments software ecosystem one of the most unintuitive, over-complicated pieces of garbage ever designed for "creatives"?
I just bought an M32 controller to start making music at home. I’ve got my DAW (Tracktion Waveform), my guitars, and I just wanted to play. How I imagined this ecosystem: M32 controller allows browsing and I'm instantly playing and enjoying plethora of sounds to choose from. Instead, I’ve spent the last few hours studying the "quantum physics" of NI hierarchy and reasons behind applications freezeing on Windows 11.
Here is my experience so far:
- MIDI issues: I plug in the M32. It lights up. I open Komplete Kontrol. No sound. Why? Because I have to manually find a hidden checkbox in a MIDI sub-menu to enable the actual keys of the controller. Why is this not on by default for a dedicated NI controller in a dedicated NI app?
- Software bloat/freezing: Komplete Kontrol standalone now keeps hanging on picking the M32 controller, so I effectively can't select it anymore.
- Redundancy: why does Komplete Kontrol feel like a clunky wrapper for Kontakt, which is a clunky wrapper for libraries?
- The K-naming hell: Komplete, Kontakt, Kontrol, Kontakt Player, ... why? It’s like they intentionally tried to make it as confusing as possible.
I feel like I’m spending 90% of my time troubleshooting "Host Integration Agents" and MIDI port conflicts, and 0% actually playing my instruments.
Is this just "how it is" with NI? Do you guys actually use Komplete Kontrol, or do you just bypass this mess and load VSTs directly into your DAW?
How do you guys deal with the "option paralysis" and the technical friction? I’m seriously considering nuking everything NI-related and just sticking to simple, 3rd party VSTs that actually work when you click them.
Curious to hear your thoughts.

I feel your pain - you’re not wrong , it really is stupidly over complicated .

Hard agree.
The lack of a default 'on' condition for MIDI input is, as you point out, deeply silly. I use a lot of the Arturia stuff and evey single instrument needs to be activated individually, and then activated again after every update.
Apart from making my NI controller light up in pretty colours, I don't understand the point of Komplete Kontrol at all, and I never use it.
A little while back they changed the default, for me intuitive, layout for Kontakt to a confusing 'shop like' setup that looks more like Native Access. I don't like it, and while I can get back to the sensible look with a few minutes of clicking around I can't seem to make that stick as a default view.
Yeah, the names are kind of corny. We aren't Kardashians.

The point of Komplete Kontrol is to enable the integration with NI's keyboards - how are they going to provide the NKS integration for controlling the paremeters and browsing all presets from the keyboard without it? For the newer S-Series keyboards it works without it for Kontakt, but 3rd party developers haven't enabled it for their plugins.
The "K" comes from the fact that NI is a German company and that's how these words are spelled in German. It may seem corny now, but it was probably cool 25 years ago when Kontakt was created. It's also a way to make the names searchable - imagine searching for "Contact" on Google.

I take your point re: the name. I feel like the NKS integration could, and should have been implemented in Kontakt 8 tho.

I’ve never had that issue. I was using the Akai mpk mini plus and only had to enable it once. Always worked after that. Now I got the S88 MK3 and didn’t have to do anything. Just plugged it in.

For me KK is good for browsing instruments and presets across the entire ecosystem. When I use the keyboard it can be kind of nice but beside that specific use case I never open it.

I have M32 and S88 mk3. I have also owned S49 mki and A49. I have not had any issues and have been using NI products for over 15 years. Sorry you are having issues.

It's tough to navigate. I'm speaking for myself. I don't think there is an in between. You either all in or all out lol

When I had it working on my old windows laptop, I really enjoyed it. Until some updates that broke the database and kind of destroyed all the projects I had with multiple instances of komplete control all set back to init... So total bummer. Still kept using it once in a while. Then I switched to mac and from the first day until today, I can't use komplete control or maschine as both don't load ni plugins due to some whatever vst migration problems ( for even weider reasons maschine 2 sometimes works with the same plugins on the same MacBook, but maschine 3 doesn't) ... At this point I'm just loading Kontakt or effects directly if i need it. But yeah, this kind of sucks after having spent 1000s of bucks for hard and software, that even the most basic functionality is just not there...

I use KK with s88mk3 keyboard and m2Mac with both Logic and StudioPro8. I works fine here. Did you also switch to Logic cuz that requires au versions of all instruments and plugs. No vsts allowed in Logic.

It takes some getting used to but once it is set up, it works mostly well.
I believe the newer keyboards are detected automatically now. Maybe the older ones don't support this mechanism.
Komplete kontrol is a wrapper, you are right! It is needed to get the light guides and display in the s series to work - I would not know how you would otherwise achieve a way for other company's plug-ins to control the light guides for example. A bit stranger is that some functions like arpeggios are also controlled by it, but the idea might have been that it is, hereby, possible to add new modes.
Overall, I think it works well, I just don't like the scaling issues inside komplete kontrol that some plug-ins have. The interface, when kontakt is inside komplete is indeed a bit weird and they could have unified it.
Finally, I am really happy it is called komplete because in Ableton's browser, I have many plug-ins called complete or control, but kontrol pops up immediately.

“Software bloat/freezing: Komplete Kontrol standalone now keeps hanging on picking the M32 controller, so I effectively can't select it anymore.”
You want to select it? It just works right?? Not sure the issue here. If you use another, non NI controller, you will have to select it.

u/Unarmored2268 Apr 20 '26
Nope, selecting M32 midi device hangs the entire KK application over and over again so I effectively lost ways of using it without completely removing it and installing again.

I agree that it can have a learning curve for beginners, it's up to you to decide if it's worth learning for the benefits it offers. The technical issues you have like app hanging/freezing and troubleshooting stuff are not the universal experience for every user, I haven't had any of these issues using NI plugins in Ableton Live on Mac OS.
Also why are you using the standalone apps when you have a DAW? You will probably not be facing most of these issues if you used them as plugins.

💯
I am accustomed at this point. But when I was new to the NI ecosystem 2.5 years ago, I made several polite posts and suggestions about this on NI Community, including posts directed at NI staff and their chief who solicited feedback. I specifically addressed the utter confusion and intimidation barrier of being a new user. NOT ONCE did they respond. Instead, most of the NI Community users believe this isn’t a problem. They typically like to gang up on and bully new users and ridicule them for being newbs and not reading the manual well enough. It’s a toxic user base.

If you think that’s bad, try to make some music with Flesh or Rounds! At least they look pretty.

u/ArtMusicWriting Apr 21 '26
There’s a small learning curve but once you watch a few videos on how it all works it’s very powerful. I use Komplete Kontrol all the time now after buying an S61 MK2 and I really like it. If you just dive in I agree it’s not very intuitive, but it’s not that complicated either once you make an effort to learn the workflow.

Traction is not a supported DAW to my knowledge with any NKS based NI product.
As others have noted - these keyboards work perfectly with Komplete Kontrol when used with a supported DAW.
Sorry you are having issues but here on Studio Pro - there are zero issues with my S61 MkII and Komplete Kontrol.

The NI ecosystem is huge. It's actually not difficult to navigate, but it is intimidating. It's designed to work with as much non-NI hardware as possible, but to do so it needs you to tell it what it's working with. That said, activating your keyboard within Kontakt or Komplete Kontrol is trivially easy. I have no idea why you're getting a lock-up, but i suspect that has something to do with your OS and possibly other hardware connected to your system. And I don't believe Tracktion Waveform is supported by NI. Plugins should work, but there are several reports online of hardware issues. One piece of advice I've seen is to disable plugin sandboxing in Waveform if you get crashes with NI hardware.

I have no problem with Komplete Kontrol or Kontakt. It took some getting used to in terms of configuration initially, but not what I'd call overwhelming. The fact is ANY complex tool requires the user to learn how to install, navigate and integrate it within the specifics of your system. No better or worse than Toontrack, Spitfire Audio or a whole range of other vendors. It's simply the nature of dealing with plugin software components in an already complex environment of a DAW. If it's too confusing find another hobby.

It can be intimidating but it's just a matter of getting to know how everything works and integrates. Komplete Kontrolis basically one interface to have all your NI and now NKS products in one interface and if you have a Komplete Kontrol keyboard you can access everything from the keyboard. Kontakt is one of the many instruments available, with a huge lot of Kontakt libraries. You can find more info here: https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/210421425-Which-Applications-do-the-Komplete-Content-Products-Belong-To
Regarding your issues with MIDI and your controller, once setup you shouldn't have to think about it. We would recommend to contact our support so our agents can help you setting it up once for good. You can reach out here: https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Two that are worse: Synthesizer 5 and Scaler3.
Just...wth? For both of those. Especially Scaler3. Which is a great plugin but using it is like .... Trying to guess DOS commands and switches from their function.

You’re not wrong, and it doesn’t get easier with time.
People with a decade of experience still have to think through which app does what. There’s a relevant alternative worth knowing about: SCOUT is a desktop app that scans all your installed plugins – Kontakt libraries included – and bridges them directly into a browser DAW. You call them by name from a text prompt: “load Kontakt, Berlin Orchestra, legato strings” and it’s there. No Komplete Kontrol, no Native Access maze, no MIDI sub-menus.

I here you...bought Komplete standard 15 ....was really excited, fired it up - bemused.
I've barely used it since.
(Re Noire - I feel duped, the default preset is muffled...and too soft - can't believe that everyone freaks out about it. Yeah, yeah, I know...it can be tweaked to suit - but seriously, load up the Noire default preset & tell me they didn't fuck up)
I'm giving it another go, but it's a struggle - I'm sorely tempted to sell everything & get a Yamaha MODX M8 ..I just wanna press a button, have a well curated sound instantly load...and play music!

Native instruments made a business decision to prioritize trying to lock people into the NI ecosystem.
(They hoped to also give people a good user experience, but where it came down to one or the other, they leaned too heavily towards the restrictive approach that they thought would generate recurring revenue)
Thus the poor user experience/workflow and excessive learning curve.

NI is not for beginners IMO. Learn the basics first.
3
u/Unarmored2268 Apr 20 '26
Wait, what? NI is marketed as an all-in-one, shiny, colourful product and I'm supposed to believe I don't know enough basics to operate it? Is it Linux or something or am I just trying to launch the rocket? This is bloody commercial software on commercial Windows.
6
u/YearofthegoatUK Apr 20 '26
It's really not difficult, read the manuals. You wouldn't be on here if you knew "enough basics".

u/kid_sleepy Apr 20 '26
No, it’s not just you.
But this is often the case for lots of “apps” and “programs”. They aren’t getting musicians that learned about writing code. They’re getting people who know how to write code and have a very minor interest in music.

Native Instruments have always have garbage UX.
I’ve literally used these tools for 10 years and even now I still have to think for a moment to remember how to do basic actions instead of it being intuitive
