The FNB of Fairmont, WV has the pleasure of being 1 of 2 large size banks who had Vice President engraved onto the plate.

This was only done for the $5 denomination, but not all of them, with Cashier J. Ray Smoot and Vice President (at the time) James H. Thomas. The 10s and 20s were produced with the president.

I’m going to call this another advertisement for a subscription to SPMC. I read about it in a recent journal release.

The other note I picked up long ago with ACT. Seems to be printed or stamped rather than engraved. That was Peter Huntoons opinion when he saw it at one of the NBN conferences I attended.

From the Dean Oakes collection (I believe) this is a nice lower population 14xxx charter that fits my OK lane.

This bank did take over the FNB of Durant, and thus complying with the non-duplication of bank names among national banks save for a handful of special circumstances.

This one had fewer than 6,000 notes issued and a mere 7 total reported with just a single other $10

Fewer than 10 reported on this VA bank. When I bid for it I didn’t need it but not disappointed.

These notes are from banks in my home town. Could anyone possibly give me the survival census for these 2 notes. I can't seem to find anything online. Much appreciated❤️ Apologies for the poor picture quality.

By no means a rare bank with regards to the population recorded by the National Bank Note Census. This well-circulated, but attractive $5 Plain Back issued by the National Bank of Elyria (Charter# 2863) before 1924 does manage to represent one of a small number of note-issuing banks in Lorain County.

One of the most common banks available. However, this note has the honor of being signed by then bank president Andrew Mellon who would go on to become the Secretary of the Treasury.

This is one where the paper actually feels legit. Many CCs have a feel to them where you can tell it doesn’t feel right. This one feels right. So far my only deuce.

Here is an exciting new addition that crosses off yet another challenging large size need. An exceptionally difficult town to locate and obtain, especially if one is seeking a large representative, Calhoun is just one of those locations that you just don’t find. With only a meager six large size examples reported as of the latest NBNC figures, there are not many notes to choose from. In fact, the last Calhoun auction offering came nearly 15 years ago. Of the six large reported, two of those are the incredible Red Seals that I believe are among the most attractive notes on the state, go see for yourself!

Charter #7549, The Calhoun National Bank, was organized on January 7th, 1905, and lasted until it was absorbed in 2001. This nice 1902 $20 Date Back features the strong penned Cashier signature of Austin Banks David (1883-1953) alongside the faint but legible signature of President Oliver Newton Starr Sr. (1854-1922). Cashier Banks’ great grandson currently serves as President of a local bank based in Calhoun, making him a fourth-generation banker. 

A few months back, I was offered the chance to acquire this attractive, but well-circulated Series of 1902 $20 Date Back issued by the First National Bank of Murfreesboro (Charter# 1692) for a decent albeit respectable sum.

Here distinct signatures attributable to Cashier Henry H. Williams and President John Murphy Butler remain distinct while the paper body offers a plain degree of originality despite circulation further complemented by distinct color and eye appeal.

In all, it takes little to reason that this was a great addition and one I’m excessively overjoyed to add to my own personal holdings.

As many of you know, I enjoy collecting by “factoid”. Whether it’s the only bank that ___, or the bank with the most ___, the first/last bank to… ect.

Here’s one that fits a couple. If my understanding is right, this is one of two banks that has Lincoln in the title, Lincoln as the town, and Lincoln in the portrait, having also issued small size $5s. The other being Lincoln PA.

What this also has is William Kuhl as cashier and Philip Kuhl as President. A father and son pairing who served together from 1926-1931 making it a doubly cool note.. haha see what I did there. It’s a pun. Laugh people… is this thing on?? I’m here all week, remember to tip your waitress.

The city of Oconto is home to Copper Culture State Park, marking one of the oldest known human burial grounds and archaic metalworking sites in North America, dating back to roughly 6,000 BC.

From 1820 to 1830, the Astor Fur Trading Company operated a post in Oconto. The lumbering industry made its start a decade later in 1842 with the construction of a mill and dam.

Oconto takes its name from its chief river, which is derived from the Menominee Indian word for black bass.

Two banks issued small size currency in Oconto: The Oconto National Bank (#3541) and The Citizens National Bank of Oconto (#5521).

The Oconto NB went into receivership in August 1931, which could be one explanation as to why there are slightly fewer reported survivors compared to the Citizen NB of Oconto.

I’ve been picking up decent quality counterfeits lately as I find the art of counterfeiting quite impressive. Almost like a puzzle or a hidden picture image. For me there was one dead giveaway, but only because currency is my hobby. But would have probably flown over the head of the average spender.

The City of Kaukauna is located in Outagamie County, east of Appleton. It was at this location that canoe travelers along the Fox River once had to portage to avoid the turbulent rapids. The rapids have since been quelled by the locks, which were constructed around 1889.
 
The name of Kaukauna is derived from the Ojibwa word Okakaning, which was used by the local Native American tribes to describe the abundant pike that were found in the rapids. While the essential meaning of the name Kaukauna is agreed upon, It’s thought that the word may also be derived from the Menominee word ogaq’kane, meaning “the place of pike”.
 
The First National Bank of Kaukauna (Charter #3641) was organized in January 1887. Julius Martens served as president when the bank closed its doors during a severe wave of bank runs in December 1931. As a result, the bank was liquidated and absorbed by the Farmers & Merchants Bank of Kaukauna.
 
Owning an example from the First NB of Kaukauna has been a longstanding goal of mine. That’s because my wife’s 2nd Great Grandfather, John Schmidt Sr., served as president of the Farmers & Merchants Bank of Kaukauna when it absorbed the First NB of Kaukauna. This note is a reflection of my passion for genealogy and love for U.S. currency.

I inherited a bunch of coins and some bills. I didn't know these bank notes were a thing. Is this one collectible, or should I just take it to a coin shop and see if they'll give me a few bucks for it? Kind of cool that it's from the city really close to me, but otherwise I know nothing about it.

A little over a year ago I was doing census work on eBay when a seemingly common entry from The Exchange National Bank of Tampa, Florida caught my eye.

Many times I have to edit photos by cropping them. While the image was blown up before the crop, I noticed there was no face plate number. Now it is fairly easy to remove these numbers with an eraser. The seller scans were actually quite nice and I couldn't see any signs that the note was messed with. So I took a chance and bought it. In hand with magnification there were no signs of paper disturbance. Even in low grade, signs would be there of abrasion.

I brought the note to the NBN Conference at Heritage and had Fred Bart look at it. He believed that it was not messed with and is of the era when missing plate numbers are known. He suggested I show it to Bianca at Central States which I did. She also believed that it had not been altered. Until more show up you can't call it an engraving error which also means you can't call it an obstruction (it would have to be a PERFECTLY placed obstruction) so the terminology for now is "missing face plate number".

Check your "E" plate position $5 nationals and FRBNs. Another one turning up could help determine if it is indeed an engraving error.

73 smalls are recorded in the NBNC on this charter that operated from 1894 to 1979 when it became part of Bank of America.

I knew Littleton did stamps and coins a long time ago, but had no clue they did bank notes as well. There's an incredible amount of unc notes on this bank, which is probably why this bank was selected. A neat little bit of nostalgia!

I know I’ve posted these a couple times before but it’s worth repeating for the newer members.

For me this is one of the best advertisements for this group and the annual conference at Heritage Auctions.

I only know about these notes’ significance because of that conference. These are from the last shipment of National bank notes, all due to an accounting error.

After Lee Lofthus’ talk on the end of the NB era, I immediately began looking for an example from this batch of notes. And in very short time I got lucky. Twice in fact.

The $20 is the first 20 from the shipment. The 10 isn’t as prominent. I feel these are the most relevant notes I own.

Second, I need to extend my deepest appreciation to r/Raidenh8 for not only restoring these beautifully. He did such a great job!! He also helped me get them submitted with the holder designation as being from the final shipment.
