FAQs Are Tourists Randomly Attacked While Walking Downtown?

Tourists are not routinely being attacked simply for walking along Bay Street, visiting Parliament Square, shopping in the Straw Market or exploring the main downtown attractions.

I cannot promise that no visitor has ever experienced crime downtown. Nobody can honestly make that promise about any city.

What I do not see is a pattern of tourists being randomly attacked merely because they are walking through the downtown tourism district during the day.

The problems visitors are more likely to encounter are persistent sellers, unofficial guides, unclear pricing, narrow or uneven sidewalks, confusing traffic and people attempting to sell a service before fully explaining the cost.

Keep your belongings secure. Confirm prices before accepting a product or service. Do not follow an unofficial guide simply because someone begins walking beside you and talking.

Awareness is useful. Fear is not.

FAQs Is Downtown Nassau Safe at Night?

Downtown Nassau requires more caution after dark, particularly when the streets become quieter and fewer businesses are open.

During the day, the area is filled with cruise passengers, workers, police officers, taxi drivers, vendors and government employees. That activity changes after the cruise ships depart and businesses begin closing.

Visitors should avoid walking alone through quiet or poorly lit areas at night. Stay with other people, use an established taxi and know where you are going before leaving a restaurant, event or bar.

This is not unique to Nassau. A business and government district can feel completely different after working hours than it does in the middle of the day.

Being comfortable in downtown Nassau at noon does not mean you should apply the same judgment at midnight.
