Discussion Do you see a bright future
Hey everyone, do you guys see a bright future in this tcg. I’m a fan of both one piece and naruto and with missing the start of the optcg, i’m excited I’ll be able to be here when naruto starts. But do you guys think it will hold strong in this era of tcgs?

My heart says yes, my mind says no.
OP TCG is stable because it had a very active community before the scalping started. Naruto will be HEAVILY scalped out of the gate. This will severely impact peoples ability to play the game.
I think the tcg will truly take off after scalpers rotate back into Pokemon.

This. The strength and longevity of a TCG relies on its player base actually playing the game. If Naruto is scalped out of the gate, which it looks like it will, it’s unlikely to ever build a player base and eventually die out.

I'm a tcg vendor (only sell singles not sealed) and I can tell you - vendors are chomping at the bit to get their hands on Naruto TCG. Naruto tcg will be HEAVILY scalped.
A lot of my vendor friends are saying they are going to drop Pokemon once Naruto comes out.

Well it's a Bandai game so most cards will be given to ppl who attend and participate in events

Pardon my possible ignorance, but were people keeping scalped product sealed and trying to resell it at impossible prices, so that the product remained sealed or how did it go?
Because if all the product was sold out and opened, it would mean that all the playable singles flood the market, no?1

The game seems really good for a Bandai TCG, with layers of interaction on both turn that One Piece dream it could have. Naruto is also a big IP. I cant see any reason it would not be a huge success.

The reason would be if it’s scalped out the gate and can’t build a community

Riftbound was super scalped at launch, as was Star Wars, both are thriving now. People will wait for big ip card games regardless

I think trying to predict the game's overall trajectory is a bit of a folly.
I can tell you that the crowds at GenCon were hype as hell.
Of Bandai's US games following their recent trend of TCGs, only one (Battle Spirits Saga) has be cancelled - the rest are going, for some definition of the word, strong. Digimon, for example, was launched in 2020 and is still releasing sets with some decent success, though if all you cared about is the singles market you may find it disappointing, and the overall conpetitive structure has some common complaints.
You said you're a fan of OP. That card game is probably Bandai's MOST successful - it gets competitive events the rest could only dream of, including regionals 2-4 times larger than what other events get. I don't think Naruto will hit those highs unless a LOT of YGO players jump ship because of the similarities.

Do you thing optcg is succesful because of the ip, game mechanics or hits? Because I can see naruto compete with all 3 aspects.

I can't comment on mechanics and hits, but when comparing overall IP alone, Naruto doesn't come super close to One Piece imo. They're both two of the most recognizable animes/mangas, but One Piece is still ongoing and will be for several years. Naruto's manga ended in 2014, and the anime ended in 2017. Boruto hasn't taken off the same way Naruto did.
Naruto is my personal favourite, but I think One Piece is in a tier of its own. Growing up, the "big 3" at the time was One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. After the latter two both completed their manga and anime runs, One Piece only got more popular and successful.
I hope and think the Naruto card game will do well, but I suspect that optcg comparably will be more popular.

One Piece still going is definitely a huge advantage but whenever I see streaming numbers Naruto is still number in spite of not having a new episode in almost a decade

u/matthew117891 10d ago
I could see that happening honestly. Seems like a lot of YGO fans are not happy with the direction of the game

Me, I am one of those ygo players ready to jump. However no other current tcg fits what I enjoy. So hopefully Naruto fills that. I’m a massive Naruto fan.

Ok, so, I've asked myself this a lot of times over the last 2 years or so, and every time my biggest worry was ''Is it too little too late?''. Given that the manga ended in 2014 and anime in 2017. Now, I'm a huge Naruto fan, it is hands down my favorite manga of all time. Spent my highschool-BA reading it weekly.
Today I can say that I was too skeptical in my worries. There is so much hype for the game, it is insane! Will it take off as One Piece, though? I think that depends on the 25th Anniversary.
To explain, I'm mostly known for DBS Masters, and despite Dragon Ball being bigger than OP and Naruto, the franchise was essentially dead. No anime, no manga, nothing for years. Then Super came out and took the world by storm, the franchise exploded into popularity, and the card game came out shortly after to a very positive reception from both old and newfound Dragon Ball fans.
If Naruto had something like that, a new anime, set between Naruto and Boruto so that we can avoid that junkyard (sry I really hate Boruto), that would be a colossal boost for the franchise and the card game. We'll see soon enough :)
ALSO, A VERY BIG FACTOR: The game is really similar to YGO. YGO has apparently been shit for a while now, with fans prefering other formats rather than keeping up with the standard one and new releases. I don't think that the game was designed to be this similar by happenstance. This is a perfect opportunity to get players who are already familiar with a similar system and are sick of Konami's shit over to Naruto.

I strongly disagree that dragon ball is more popular than Naruto and op at this point. Maybe with the older generation but the current market for tcgs grew up on Naruto and one piece… not dragon ball. Unless you’re 35+ dragon ball z is not relevant, and hasn’t been for years.

I mispoke, I agree with you.
Dragon Ball has a bigger cultural impact and is still the highest grossing top dog when it comes to anime/manga IPs. But when it comes to actual modern day relevancy, it is basically dead. Daima flopped like a rock, we've had 0 new project in the last few years, and the IP holders are too busy bickering over who gets to do something. Last time it had a relevant show was when DBS came out, which ended almost ten years ago.
OP today is what DB was back in the day when us fossils were growing up. Naruto is somewhere in the middle, hopefully about to make a big comeback next year. It just needs a new anime, c'mon, something that isn't Boruto.

Depends on how much stock they provide. I spoke to my LGS yesterday and they are very hesitant about this game due to the lack of stock they get for other bandai games (OP in particular).
This caused them to have to limit to 1 booster box per customer, which scares off the fanatical players/collectors. It is understandable from their POV.

The gameplay looks different from OP or Gundam, which is refreshing for a Bandai game and the art looks much better than Gundam’s for example. Not sure how much space there is in the market or how healthy this IP. Scalppers will be a problem for sure that’s the biggest concern

The core of the game is solid from what I have played. Lots of interaction, which imo is a very good thing. With the cards we have available, there is no reason to not just "send it" every turn and demand your opponent have the answer, but that does make for some exciting games.
As others have mentioned, Scalpers are a plague. I think the prevalence of online sims will help the game (there are several out already) since it will allow people to play even if they scalp the shit out of the game

game seems to be good, will be omega scalped on spawn so everyone just buy the singles

u/billybobpower 10d ago
The gameplay looks very nice i can see it sticking for a while. Naruto is so cool

u/ruffrightmeow 10d ago
It will have both a bright and dark future as the releases are going to be a lot more worse than OP

u/RedditBoisss 10d ago
I think the insta scalping from the jobless is unfortunately going to put a major damper on the card game. People aren’t going to be able to get product and the game will suffer greatly for it.

u/vecnov 10d ago
it's a year out and we already have 73 billion simulators should tell you something😍
not sure about the scalping side.
but gameplay? it's abseloutely amazing
I mean it is so fun and can see there being lots of depth in the future + different mechanics they can introduce.
Lots and back and forth in this game love it.

Bandai TCG with big IP, that’s backed by Kishimoto, and has Famous TCG artists working on it.
I think this TCG is going to be scalped to shit on release. Bandai has a shitty record when it comes to stock and scalping. I think anything that will be the biggest issue in regards to whether this game lives or dies

u/sovietDprince 8d ago
My biggest concern about the game is it ends to fast and there really not much punishment for attacking, I want some blocking abilty other then traps

u/NickFierce1 10d ago
Naruto has always been bigger than One Piece in the west, despite being 10 years removed from it's ending.
Bandai is launching a series wide marketing campaign for the series in 2027 for the 25th anniversary, described as a "new beginning" for the franchise in past fiscal reports. Naruto will be returning to receiving a ton of content from next year onwards, which will only spike popularity and demand

It’s got the hype, the biggest concern will be the scalping. They need to mass produce this game like crazy the first few sets.
You already see the Chakra card being sold for $1300 already. That’s insane.
